We have a 2001 5.9L diesel with 120K original miles. Hubby will only use Rotella T4 15W-40. I changed the oil in it for the first time and the filter isn’t accessible from below. I slipped a one gallon Ziplock bag from underneath the oil filter to prevent spilling. I can’t believe it worked. The oil pan plug was on waaayyy to tight. It’s supposed to be 40ft. lbs. torque. I worked on breaking it loose for at least 10 minutes. It was a success. No muss, no fuss. Well, a little fuss. Worth it though.

This procedure applies to the 6.7 Cummins as well. I have both a 2005 5.9 and a 2014 6.7 and it’s the same for both. I remove the intake tube and leave the air box. Easy and simple. Don’t go through the wheel well like a lot of videos show. Unless you want to do it the hard way. And hand tighten the filter. That way you can remove it by hand the next time.

I have a 1999 Cummins L6 and my truck needs 10 qts plus also prime your oil filter, and my vehicle manual says Frequent short driving less than 5 miles, Frequent driving in dusty conditions, Frequent trailer towing, Extensive idling, more than 50% of your driving is at sustained high speeds during hot weather, above 90F. Change your oil every 3,000 miles, if none of these apply to you, change your oil every 7,500 miles or 200 hours, whichever occurs first. Straight up from my owner's manual. Use API SERVICE CF-4/SH or CG-4. SAE 15W-40, Oils with high ash content may produce deposits on valves that can progress to guttering and valve burning, a maximum sulfated ash content of 1.85 mass% is recommended for all oil used in the engine. I hope this helps. 👍

I personally like to get the filter from underneath. The filter will be perfectly above you and easy to remove if you lay down with your head just in front of the front axle. For safety reasons I always make sure to keep the filter perfectly level when removing to avoid oil spilling out, hitting my face, and potentially worst case scenario getting in my eyes. I also found out if you don’t have a filter wrench a belt that you would wear works. I also run the Valvoline premium blue. Better than Dela and Nutella.

i use the oil filter cap you can buy for like 8 bucks they are aluminum and its for screwing into the top of the oil filter when you take it off the truck so if you have to tip the filter or anything it doesnt spill they are nice and they make them for multiple filters

According to Dodge/Cummins the oil change interval for the 5.9L engine following schedule B use (severe) is 7500 miles, not 3000 or 5-6000 miles. Schedule A use (normal) is 15,00 miles. This is when using the recommended full synthetic oil of either 5w40 or 15w40 depending on local temperature. (Most vehicles require the schedule B maintenance cycle due to short trips, excessive idling, etc.) Why would you throw out guesses on something like this?

As you were saying that I saw the Valvoline oil sitting there and then you showed a Fram filter and that's when I fell out of my chair laughing! Yea this video is 3 years old but I'm still laughing! Are you an actual certified automotive/diesel tech? GOOD LUCK!!

im pretty sure i hear bearing tick or valve train tick coming out of that truck at 9 minutes i have three of the 3rd gens one late 3rd gen and two early 3rd gens and i had that same faint tick/knock noise it turned out to be the factory rod bearings are junk and can slide out of place so i dropped the pan on all three trucks and replaced them with good bearings and tick/knock is gone .... just saying i work around these diesels all the time and it definitely has a tick/light knock .. whether its fuel knock or what i said if i was your brother in law id get it looked at or use a mechanics stethoscope and i guarantee youll find theres a knock..

Yeah man, Amsoil is great. Besides, the "change oil every 3,000 miles" is sound advice from the 1980's and not relevant today. My 2014 Ram 2500 6.7 change interval is 15,000 miles from the factory. I still run bypass-filtration though.
