Thank you. That is why we make the videos.
I was glad to see this was just as much of a pain for Wade as it is for me. Always kind of thought I was doing it the hard way. I always empty the bowl first before pulling the filter. I'm done using the stock Fleetguard filters. So many times the plastic lid nearly separated from the filament when pulling it out. And then one day it did. What a mess that was. Now I use the NAPA Gold. 7 micron and heavier construction. However now I'm interested in this Baldwin 5 micron filter. Think I'll try that next. That's why I like these videos and forms. Gets people talking and sharing. UPDATE: Just received my Baldwin 5 micron. Haven't installed it yet but took a good look at it and really like the construction. Update: Used the Baldwin 5 micron PF7977 two times now and it's working great.

When filter is out and drain open spray it out with carb cleaner and you will be good to good .
I like how you hand tighten until its firm, and then put the tool on it. first time i did this in 2008 i had leaking at the filter cover because I didn't do that carefully. Thank you!
Very informative, I do half to point out the trying to keep fuel in there to not have air pocket, yet drain and clean seems hypocritical
definitely drain the fuel bowl, sediment collects in there.

I believe most of the contaminants in the fuel system come from the filthy pump nozzle at the gas stations. Right before the tank fills and foam washes the dirt off the nozzle and into the tank I hand hold the nozzle a bit higher and make sure that doesn't happen!
I use 1 -1/8 open end wrench! Just got to remember not to over tighten, it is plastic cap.
I’ve recently found a fuel filter that filters down to 5 micron instead of the 7 the stock fleetguard does. It’s a Baldwin, part number PF7977. I switched to it with my last filter change. You can’t go wrong with better filtration. Even if it is only 2 microns, thats 2 microns smaller you’re cleaning your fuel

That's what I use is the Baldwin 5 micron now,always used the Fleetguard before on my 03 Dodge Cummins 5.9. In fact when I bought the truck new the Fleetguard fuel filters then was rated at 10 micron. Also when I replaced the o ring I always use a little dab of new grease around the threads and the o ring to help get a better easier on seal.

I don't understand why Thoroughbred Diesel would put a stock filter back in especially when that was one of the main causes of injector failures on a 24 valve common rail. I get mine at Cummins and I believe they go down to 2 micron. Stock filter was only good to 10 micron and I believe the Cummins recommendation for the common rail was 5 micron and Dodge said No 10 will do...

Everybody has their own way of doing things. I drain the canister first completely. Then remove the filter and replace it with a 4 micron Baldwin filter put the lid on tighten it down cycle the ignition switch several times and it will fill the canister and the truck will start right up.

Your right to open drain first and spray housing down to get and sediment or dirt out first and bump starter a couple of times till it’s full and then your hood to go !!
You don't need that expensive Snapon socket. I've used my Harbor Freight 1 1/8" impact socket on my 2005 Ram 5.9l Cummins for 17 years, works perfect every year. I change oil, filter, and fuel filter all every year.
Love the video hate that you are advertising the higher micron filter.
I use Baldwin. They filter to 5 microns.
AC Delco fuel filter is down to 4 microns and on Amazon for $18.50 or Advance for more.
this proffessional forgot the most important step.DRAIN the filter housing first,he even talks about the dirt in the bottom of the can,so when he pulled that filter without draining the can,where do you suppose some of that dirt might have gone,yup.right in the line to your CP3 pump.not great.

If you were worried about unfiltered fuel wouldn't you drain the filter sump before pulling the filter? Does the minimal chance of contamination make that point moot?
Id get rid of that housing all together but it has a heater to warm the fuel in the winter.
Bump starter 2-3 times and good to go .

turn the key on or bump the starter to refill the bowl? not clear there. otherwise, nice thorough vid thanks
Has anyone ever experienced the following issue after replacing their fuel filter: When I replaced my filter this last time I noticed quite a bit of sediment in the bowl and we decided to clean it out. We drained the bowl and had to use some suction to get all the sediment (as our hands were too big to get into the bowl to the bottom). I think this caused a problem with it staying primed. When we replaced the filter and attempted to start the vehicle, as explained it this video, it started but only ran a couple of seconds and died. I did not hear the fuel pump engage when the key was turned on. We attempted a number of times, but couldn't get it started and didn't see any fuel entering the bowl when the key was turned on. A mechanic friend said to put ATF in the bowl and reinstall the filter. This worked in priming the truck and it started up. It has been running since then, but shortly afterwards it started doing something odd. When you started the truck and left it to idle, instead of idling at about 750 RPMs it would rev up to around 1,000 RPMs, then sometimes after a few minutes it would idle back down. When in gear it would return to the 750 and move according to the speed being traveled, but whenever you would put it in park it would again rev up to around 1,000 RPMs. I've asked, but no one seems to know why it is doing this. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you in advance.
That’s what I use a big crescent wrench .
1st thing I do is drain the filter completely. Not much Fuel will drain from the filter that way, Remove the filter replace with a 4 micron Baldwin. Close the valve Cycle in tank pump several times cranks right up never fails. Yes everyone's got their own way of doing things.
I have a 05 with about 220,xxx on it and I’ve never seen my filters that dirty dam

@@americummins4048 it's called fluid injection injury. These things run at crazy high pressure like 20,000 psi. If your hand gets sprayed, pressure will cut through the skin and diesel will go into blood stream. You can remove the inlet bolt at the CP3 and get a fuel pressure bolt that we offer to be able to screw any 1/8 NPT fuel pressure gauge into.
This has lots of valuable information. However, please ask your cameraperson to use two hands so they are more stable and use a tripod whenever possible.

@thoroughbreddiesel

If oil level is rising, probably suspect something going on with your injectors or high pressure injections system. Have injectors tested and the overall engine compression tested as well.
Breathing heavy enough?
I have an issue maybe you can help with. 2004 5.9. Truck would overfuel on occasion and actually ran away on me, requiring me to turn off ignition. It has over 200000 miles and I thought it would be a good time to install a complete set of injectors. After install I ran the unit up and checked for leaks, all good. I shut down and afterwards developed a no start problem. Checked lift pump operation ok. Cracked 1 3 4 injectors and found minimal pressure present. Im thinking rail relief valve issue, what are your thoughts.
@thoroughbreddiesel

Never open injection lines on a common rail. Also, when the lines are open the system will not build pressure enough to start. That being said, I would think that you have a feed tube that isn't torqued correctly. Retorque all feed tubes.

Don't you drain the fuel filter to make sure any dirty diesel gets out of the system. This way you could be washing the exterior of the filter into the canister, new filter goes in and some of the dirty fuel bypasses the filter
I would add Vaseline to the orings, and the threads. Also it’s best if you don’t touch the filter bare handed. The oils from your hand can mess with the water separating ability, use gloves.
Could you drain the can, replace the filter and pour the drained fuel back in? Obviously checking for debris but overall no harm no foul?
