How to do a compression test on your engine *134000 miles*

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi everyone hope you keeping well.
As promised I performed a compression test on my 1.8T golf gti that's done 134k miles. I was very happy with the results considering the mileage its done and the fact that its been running 300bhp on stock internals for the last 20k miles.
I used a laser compression tester bought from machine mart and really advise that you don't use these cheap ones off Ebay due to the inconsistency I had in the past.
As always thanks for watching and keep safe.

I agree with you about the compression testers. Tried it for myself. The cheap one showed only 8 Bar and the better one 14.5 Bar. Just out curiosity, I used the pipe of the better tester on the gauge of the cheap one, and now it also showed 14.5 Bar. The car I tested was my VW Polo 9N3 (2006) with the 1.4l 16V (non Turbo) engine. The mileage is around 248k km. Pretty consistent with all the cylinders. Conclusion: the better tester has a schrader valve on it which made the difference. Such a small detail made a night and day difference. Thanks for the video. 😃

@@blackops2376 Hi mate,i bought the car on 80k miles and ive always changed the oil every 3-5k miles in some cases even after 1500 miles. The key for me is not abusing it also and avoiding the redline/rev limiter. I always warm the car up properly before boosting and let it cool down after boosting. Hope this helps

Hi mate, love the videos. Big help for me! I bought a mk2 golf with a 1.8t conversion that needs a bit work, a bit out of my depth but learning as I go. I ran a compression test following your video, what do you think of my results? The engine is a 130,000 mile AMK from a s3. Cylinder 1: 175 psi Cylinder 2: 190 psi Cylinder 3: 190 psi Cylinder 4: 175 psi. Obviously 1 and 4 are down a bit. Should I be worried at all? The engine runs well.

Hi Mate thanks for watching and supporting, Glad you’ve joined the 1.8T family lol. Those results are good mate considering the mileage is similar to my golf. I wouldn’t be worried about anything there. If those two results were under 150 then hmmmm I would be like okay you might have an issue somewhere. Enjoy the car mate.

i just crossed 160,000 miles on MK4. It is completely stock (I know boring). That said the engine is starting to tire and it's time i run a compression test. I put about 500 miles a week on it, so fingers crossed!

Hi mate depends on what the manufacturer deems appropriate for good and bad. I know on the 1.8T 160-200 is considered fresh engine, anything below 140 is rather low. The other thing to consider is the tester being used, I made a separate video on this and you must use a good quality branded one. Here is a link for the 1.8T guide that shows in bar which needs to be converted to psi. donkiespeed.nl/audi-1-8t-20v-checking-compression/
