How to Disassemble & Change Coilover Springs (COMPLETE GUIDE)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Getting your suspension dialled in may require more patience and finessing than you might have expected. A set of fully adjustable coilovers will give you the ability to adjust your ride height, along with preload and dampening as you wish, however you cannot adjust the spring rate. If you would like to change how your car rides, you will most likely need to swap out your springs for something stiffer/ softer depending on how you prefer your car. I prefer running a stiff set of springs, with very soft dampening. I’m yet to run into problems where the shock absorber needs to be rebuild because the fluid may pass from one side of the shock to the other without much resistance. In this video, I will show you how I replace the coilover springs on my BC coilovers. Not only am I changing the spring rate, but I am also changing the spring size which should in theory give me more useable shock stroke.

    To avoid the need for air tools, another way to do this, is like this: Note- there is ONE ADJUSTER ring (top one) and TWO LOCK rings (the next two rings- one after the adjuster and the lowest one locking the collar tight). 1) Measure the heights of everything, and write it down (as he mentioned in the video). 2) However, BEFORE removing the entire strut, spray WD-40 then crack the spring LOCK ring, and undo it 25mm (1inch) down the shaft thread, apply more WD-40 as needed.. 3) Use the adjuster tool and crack the spring ADJUSTER ring. 4) Spray more WD-40 on the threads. 5) Start undoing it until the spring pressure is released. 6) The collar LOCK ring can now be cracked loose, because the collar is still bolted into the car's trailing/suspension arm. 7) Spray WD-40 above it and undo it UP the shaft, a bit. 8) Now remove entire assembly and you will be more easily able to remove all 3 rings with WD-40 etc by hand or with minimal tool force I hope this helps someone

    Great video . So my question is I have tein flex z coil overs which rate a 2.5 drop and I dropped it so there is no space between the 3 rings.. now when I have the car jacked up the entire spring can move up and down and all around like it’ just dangling around the shock.. is this because I dropped the car too low and the springs aren’t long enough ? When I drop the car the spring is tight again so idk if I can just leave it or should it not be completely loose when the car is jacked up?? Or should I try to buy longer springs ? I’m so lost

    So I need your advice on something. I drive a 2012 mazda 3 hatchback lowered on godspeed coilovers and I want to go lower than what the coilovers will allow me. I want to do spring upgrades because my fronts are 62mm 200mm length 8k and my rears read 62mm 190mm length 5k. Could I do shorter springs but the same spring rate? Or is it better to do shorter springs and a stiffer spring rate to compensate for weight?

  • @milanmastracci

    @milanmastracci

    3 жыл бұрын

    So a shorter spring will give you less suspension travel, where a stiffer spring will require more force to compress it. It sounds like you need something like BC extreme low's if you're maxing out the amount of shock for your car. I wouldn't recommend it, but you CAN remove the lower shock collar.

    When changing to a different spring rate, shouldn't you change the length of the spring? Since a softer spring will compress more under the cars weight than a harder spring. Also, how do you know how much longer or shorter the spring should be when changing spring rates?
