The MAJOR problem with auto-idle (which isn't mentioned here) is the fact that starting your engine is the single most damaging activity to your engine. Why would you save a little in gas to greatly decrease the longevity of your engine? Does not make sense.

  • @VantasticPacifica

    @VantasticPacifica

I'm not sure how much damage is actually being done by starting and stopping the engine. What you say was more true of older cars. According to the manufacturer, the starter and flywheel and any other engine parts that would normally be affected have been modified and they suggest it shouldn't be a worry. However, there is definitely a few things that don't make sense here. I question the methods used to determine how much fuel this system supposedly saves. I think the manufacturers have done some mathematical gymnastics to make it look like the cars have a greater MPG than what is achievable in the real world.

On a Ford f150 you can have this feature completely removed at the factory when you order one... greatest option I ever got rid of. The feature is useless and really serves no purpose

Here is what I found with my F150. I noticed about 50% of the time the auto/stop wouldn't engage. Turns out if you put a little stress on the engine (IE run the air conditioner about 1/2 to full blast) this is just enough to keep it from engaging. Now living in the Deep South, you run your AC about 3/4 of the year. But that other 1/4 yeah, you got to manually disengage the system.

  • @paulc.1535

The engineers that came up with this useless feature should be fired immediately. It serves no purpose and does absolutely nothing except to add more wear and tear on your engine and starter. So happy Ford allows it to be removed on my '22 F150!! I never have to worry about this again!

The system is not useless. It does at least one important thing very well... It allows the auto manufacturers to inflate fuel mileage numbers so they can sell more cars. The engineers that came up with this feature probably got raises.

Yea they are a false economy. Also the AGM batteries you need for start/stop are also about 2x the price of a normal one and don't last as long. In many cars (like BMWs) they need "programming" in as well when you swap it. You can't simply do it yourself, it's a dealer job with costs attached.

It's important to note that this feature isn't primarily for you as the customer. This feature is so the car manufacturers can market their car as slightly more efficient than it really is. This bumps them up on the charts since technically it will burn slightly less in the "city driving" metric. Since all the manufacturers are so close in terms of fuel economy, this tiny bump causes them to gain a lot of places on the charts if they do it and your company doesn't, thus this annoying feature spread throughout the industry like wildfire. The manufacturer doesn't care about the longevity of the car as long as it makes it to the end of the warranty period. so i mean, if you dont care either, and also dont want AC/Heat while stopped, and dont care about a worn-out starter, and dont care about wearing out the bottom end faster, then by all means save a few bucks a month on fuel (potentially). But for people who want to keep their car for a long time and not treat it like getting a new phone every year or 2, then this feature is crap.

That's awesome! Glad to help. But like I said, it's not a perfect solution but it's probably the easiest and cheapest. I recently ordered a device that is supposed to remember how you left the button when you turned the car off so it'll still be that way when you turn it on again. I wouldn't say it's cheap($100) but it might be better than unplugging a wire from your sensitive electrical system and hoping for the best. As a senior citizen I have a psychological twitch to my vehicle motor virtually stalling at a busy intersection with a long red traffic light. The anxiety must come from an archaic memory of when I was young and poor a stalled car meant calling a tow truck while surrounded by angry drivers. So I've been pushing the stop/start button every time I get into my 2018 Pacifica LX which is in itself annoying. Today I just followed your simple fix, which I suspect can be reversed just by putting the plug back in if/when I want to sell the vehicle without that tell-tale warning light on the dashboard. If KZread would allow me to push the thumbs up button a thousand times in gratitude for your video, I would do so! BTW I asked my Chrysler dealer how much to turn off the start/stop system and they said at least $200!!

  • @VantasticPacifica

Thank you for that amazing comment. I totally empathize with your psychological twitch. Lol! And you are correct to assume that plugging it back in should eliminate the tell-tale warning light on the dashboard, at least it did for me. As far as your Chrysler dealer charging $200, that's a first I've heard. Usually, they just refuse to do it. I wonder if something's changed.

The one thing that maybe others don't realize is that this system causes your car to start over and over again which seems obvious but the cost of the starter when it fails because of the excessive starting will cost you more than any savings you'll ever get in gas mileage by having the system enabled in the first place

I'm sure no one ever mentions the most serious problem with this feature. When your vehicle does not restart after lifting your foot off the brake. My car has stopped several times at a stop light and would not restart. So I had to place it into park and turn off my engine, then restart it. My most scariest and most unacceptable occasion was when I was in RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC (stop. & go). My vehicle stopped, I quickly placed it into park and tried 3 times to restart before my vehicle restarted. I took it to the dealership and told them I do not want this feature and wanted it removed or disabled but was told it couldn't be disabled. I was told it was because my battery needed to be recharged. I am waiting for the first court case of injury or death for anything to change. My next vehicle will be based on not having this feature. Good luck, everyone.

It takes more fuel to start a vehicle just leave it run for the few seconds that it’s going to be running. Plus short stop/starts are hard on the battery life. Especially in very colder states weather that puts extra strain on the battery. As cold winter weather takes much more power to start an engine. I could see engine shutting off in long stalled traffic. Such as an accident/clean up, etc to save fuel. Like I said this is my opinion. What's yours?

I'm waiting for these to start failing in traffic, light turns green - NOTHING - then someone hits you in the back because they expected you to move and your car is sitting there clicking. Actually the idea of jimmying the hood switch sounds like a good one. Something that can be done with a paper clip, tape and isn't permanent. I'm betting that is to keep motor running for mechanics.

Thanks for the info! That tiny delay has almost killed my family several times! Our 2019 Volkswagon Tiguan was our first vehicle with this start-stop system. I discovered this death trap while trying to accelerate onto busy traffic lanes when seconds counted. My vehicle would bog down on me and basically stop and thrust forward, I had some close calls! My wife pulled up to the garage door with her foot on the brake and when she took her foot off the car lunged forward into the door. It took me a bit to figure out what was going on so I have been shutting the star-stop system for a while now with no other problems, it's just remembering to do it when I start the car. I wonder how many accidents this system has caused!

In the city, I get around 18 or 19 miles per gallon but a lot depends on how you drive and even the weather plays a factor. You'll get better fuel mileage when the weather cools off. But when I get out on the open road for hours at a time, I can get up to 30 miles per gallon. set your cruise control to 60 miles per hour and stay in the slow lane and just relax. On a cool day on relatively flat roads, you'll get over 500 miles per tank!

The entire “stop/start” concept was to manipulate the mpg calculation. Try a test, first you fill up your gas tank at the start, remembering where you filled up, set your trip meter, drive your trip, return to the same gas station, same pump. Calculate your MPG, then compare it with your vehicles mpg estimate. Bet it’s different, why because I think it only uses miles and gas consumed when moving. The Auto/Stop/Start does damage to your turbocharger by, ”hot shut down” which fries the cooling system to the turbo. It doubles or triples the starter wear and tear, and the starter ring on the flywheel. And that’s just for basics, I bet there is more to come.

Don't Do this! If you want to disable auto start/stop on your F150 (works on 2021-2023 models for sure, don't know about older models or the upcoming 2024 refresh, but I'm pretty sure its the same or similar.) Go into your infotainment system. Bring up Features. Bring up towing. Choose select default trailer. That's it. That's all you have to do. Don't buy any devices. Don't jumper the button. Don't disconnect the BMS from the negative lead on the battery. The truck will think a trailer is connected, but it won't cut off your backup camera, or give you any warning messages or anything like that. Plus you don't run any risk of voiding your warranty, or shorting your circuitry with some cheap Chinese "auto start eliminator," or by plugging in some trailer circuit test kit that isn't designed to be left in as you drive the truck every day leaving it exposed to the elements.

Yeh man, I read years ago (AAA magazine) that if you're not going to sit more than 3 minutes then you will waste more fuel restarting the engine than idling 3 minutes. Also you are drastically reducing the life of your starter (and other related components). The oil is so thin in small engines today that they get lubrication almost instantly, so I don't think there would be a problem as you would have in a big block 8 cylinder engine wearing because it takes longer to get oil to all the metal parts when you start the engine. Thanks for the info.

Biggest issue for me isn't the slight delay in the engine starting, it's turning off an engine that's already off and starting the darned thing up again! I pull up outside my house, wiggle back and forth a bit to get close to the wall, handbrake on, shift into park, press the button to turn the engine off ... and the engine starts!

Yes, I had that issue too. When I stop to park, the engine shuts off. I shift into park, it turns back on then I have to turn it off. It felt so unnecessary.

This plug was super easy to find on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler. There are 2 batteries in the Wrangler, and the lower one is hard to get to, but the plug is on the negative terminal of the upper battery.

Measure the voltage if the engine is on. It must be above 14 V. I did this procedure but the voltage was ca 13,8 V - its bad for battery.

I HATE STOP/START!!! Thanks for making this video. Most of the time I want the engine running while stopped. The only real savings is when you are waiting in the drive-thru line at a fast food joint or when you stop to talk with someone for a while. Otherwise, not much saved when you just stop at a light or stop sign. Also, I think that there is a dedicated extra battery for the stop/start system and this is charged from the alternator, so that when you think that the electrical system is turned off simply by disconnecting the main battery, there is still current in the system. Here is a link to how this is done on the Jeep Wrangler JL: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJxmo5evoN3Ac6Q.html

Scared me the first time on the Honda Civic Sport when I forgot to turn this off. Strange feature in an otherwise great car that doesn't need that crap to begin with, getting nearly 400 miles of range and over 25 mpg just regular town/city driving. I might do this and make sure it doesn't void the warranty either. Thanks man!
