How to Detach Remove Parking Brake Cable from Rear Caliper - Grand Caravan (Town and Country)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This video will show you how to detach the Hand Brake Cable from your Rear Brake Caliper on your Dodge Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town & Country.
This video is demonstated on a Grand Caravan with standard (non-heavy duty) brakes. You can tell if your car has standard or heavy-duty brakes by looking at the FRONT caliper. Our vehicle has a single piston front caliper and so is fitted with standard brakes (heavy duty brakes have a dual piston front caliper).

This really helped my dad thank you for making these videos!!
Go just ahead of the drivers rear wheel. There is a splitter/evener that turns 1 cable into two. Make a softener from a few layers of a ceral box. Pull down on the cable to get slack and Vicegrip the softener around cable so it can't retract to hold slack in the cable. This gives lots of slack at both rear calipers. Use needlenose to squeeze tabs and can unhook rears in about 15 seconds and you are not fighting against a spring.
This is great video! Going to do both back calipers today. First going to go buy new brake cables and not wait till gunk wears out new pads. Thanks very helpful videos on Caravan brake calipers also.👍🏼

Thank you so much you just saved my life with this video I had to remove wheel bearings on rear driver side and couldn't remove them cuz I'm not a mechanic didnt have cash for the mechanic was stranded and my bolts were sheared so I couldn't use slide hammer to remove I also called around about a press through auto ships that tried to charge me$ 345 to press out the old and in the new!! I was able to still remove it using the socket set for removing axle from autozone and slide hammer( removed hammer from bar and just went away at it placed socket over the hub and got it to come out thank you so so so much man God bless!!!! I couldn't find a video any where that went into depth about this little part thanks again man

You can also apply a wrench on the bolt on the spring side of the caliper and turn upward causing the spring to lean forward allowing the cable to slide through that space. Great job
That was absolutely great. Thank you.
Doing my rear calipers now on an 08 caravan act, same basic principle for the cable, except for the tabs. On my cable there's a series of metal tabs, one of which can only be fit through the slot by spinning the caliper 180°. I had to manipulate it by removing the spring and rotating the caliper with the hydraulic line disconnected, therefore, being the last step in removal and, as it seems, the first in installation
Good idea to leave caliper mounted on bracket and leverage. Most other videos show cable removal with caliper in one hand and cable in the other an use brute force.

You can also use a small cable tie to pull the prongs in, instead of a screwdriver, it's easier.

For those of you like myself that have the spiderweb or octopus clip I use either a heavy zip ties or a piece of copper wire it save the world of headaches I also hate those stupid pistons ratcheting and get out of here
However, we have gotten it a time or two, but when we went to finish it just slid right back and we start from square one again

This video was exactly what I needed! 👍
Figured this out on my own, unfortunately lol. I like my way better. Needle nose the clips back and pull left while a 13mm wrench pulling left as well to work against return spring on the caliper and a bit of pissed off super muscle. When the white inner cable is shown in the retaining slot slide it out.

Great tip. How do you adjust the handbrake on this car? I have the same car and I think the handbrake is binding after replacing the pads, I wound back the caliper piston, fitted new pads, but now I have brakes binding and over heating the discs, I think its the internal handbrake, what should I do? Thanks.

Yes, the mechanism for the parking brake on these rear calipers is terrible, and will often bind (or the complete opposite!!) when the mechanism starts to go bad. Try getting reconditioned calipers, that will save some decent money, and check out our full caliper replacement video. Just (literally this week!) had to replace both rear calipers, one binding exactly like yours, and the other side not locking at all. Why cant you just take the bracket off that holds the cable in place?
Hi, just removed the cable from the caliper but one of the plastic retaining tabs broke off. Is there any way to replace the plastic tab piece or do I have to now replace the entire emergency brake cable?
@barrycorney3665

I wouldn't be that concerned, look at the effort to get it out it's not going anywhere, and you could always rig up a couple of cable/zip ties to hold it in place if it worries you....
Is there a way where I can remove the handbrake bc I don’t want it there no more it’s annoying?

Important Note: if your rear brake pads need to be changed all the time, these two parking brake cables are the cause. Moisture gets in & they start corroding inside. I changed the passenger side in 2016, and today, the driver's side brake seized up. Used a sawzall and hacksaw to cut thru the cable to release the parking brake.

My stupid van has 3 pins... one on the bottom I cannot get this thing off for the life of me... What an absolutely stupid idea to put a pin on the bottom.... Thanks a lot Dodge..
Money!
5 to 30 minutes... We been working on it for over an hour already
So much easier to use needle nose pliers
most of these videos gloss over the hard shit. or have a pristine vehicle. i went to change the rear shocks and what a NIGHTMARE!!! went to change the rear brake pads, caliper was siezed. hammered on the rotor, juiced it up, no go. decided to stop hammering because i had to put the old shit all back together until a later date when i am fully prepared to replace the rear brake lines just in case they dont come peacefully. and judging by the upkeep on the rear end, probably the original parts. i just hope my parking brake cable comes as easily as this. thinking now AFTER i put it all back together, should have juiced up every possible connection i could think of that needs to come free. me thinks i am going to the junkers, practice on an old salvage as i always do, as if it is my own, gently prepping for the real thing. oh the crap comes off easily enough if you hack and slash which i sometimes resort to but hack and slash you dont get the nuances of the real thing and your stuck halfway in the middle of your repair because you didnt learn all you could while removing parts off the junker. i must say you did a really good job showing how to remove the critical piece of Ebrake cable. usually when you see some part of a vehicle that hasnt had the maintenance it requires, it usually means that the job is loaded with engineering peculiarities that make it hard for the common man, specialty tools, hard to reach areas, pieces breaking as you go, peices that require some knowledge how to remove and people like me just break in clumsiness. thanks for the excellent info.

The parking brakes on this van are annoying. My parking brake pedal is super hard to push then the van still rolls. Worked perfectly fine then one day it got hard to push. Might just change both calipers, rotors and brakes.

Yes, they are! It's not the best system, and these calipers don't tend to last as long as they should, most often parking brake related issues. obvious that these cars have this issue...my GF's brake line snapped awhile ago and now it squeaks and 95% sure this is the issue...can you leave the line there after its removed or cut it somehow...we want it all gone and will just use a damn chaulk block

The brake system on the Dodge Grand caravan is total shit. It is too small for this vehicle. Brake pads and rotors do not last long with everyday driving. BTW it helps to have the proper tools and not kill yourself with a screwdriver. There are special spreaders, clamps and pliers for this type of work that make it a breeze. Also if you are doing a standard pad and rotor swap there is no need to remove the e-brake cable, but if you are swapping the caliper itself then you should get the proper tools if you plan on keeping the caravan for a while.
@YouWrench

Yes, the brake system is a little under spec really when you consider the load rating of the vehicle. There is a 'heavy duty' variant of the brakes with a twin piston front caliper and larger fluid reservoir etc which is improved but likely still not up to the maximum load rating. Yes, no need to remove the cable for a rotor and pad change (see our complete rotor and pad change video here: Fronts kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZuCsZOEg8y-eqQ.html Rears kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIiClNNpc7e-hto.html) --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome!
