Excellent advice- sometimes we need to embrace what can seem outdated and not be so quick to change or dismiss. In the long run it will be more interesting and the quality is often better. Thank you Garrett and Happy New Year! 😊☺️🥰❤️🌴☀️🦩🥰❤️

YES!! 🙌🏻 I’m the biggest advocate for dark wood. I just got a 1930s Walnut Burl dresser! My friend was going to give it to Goodwill. I had to pay him for it because he had no idea what it was. ❤️🐩

Two of the rooms u showed r Craftsman Homes. The first one u showed was 1920’s Craftsman. YES! Let’s bring back both Craftsman and Arts and Crafts time period of detail quality!!!! I am SO tired of the off white drywall open boxes that are the trend 😳.

Since you mentioned minimalism, my complaint with it is the lack of art and color. It’s not healthy to live in a cell. I like simple, clean spaces, but show some love.

I'd put posh navy fabric velvet tailored valances or something to bring out the lead pattern in the windows without trapping the heat inside. I might be totally wrong, but I think it would be good contrast. Maybe navy rug. Maybe indigo instead of the navy blue idea. I dunno.😮😮😮

Love the video and your style and especially the “curated interesting” term. Was watching another designer recently who advised “don’t decorate with grandma’s whatever” . I looked around my space and I had quite a few of grandma’s and great grandma’s whatevers mixed in. Most in the 100 years plus or minus category and with a story. Predicting these items will still be interesting long after today’s mass produced decor (whether high end or from Target) has long hit the landfill. Happy New Year!

Thanks so much! I think mixing new with some vintage is very elevated and very timeless. I love to mix modern with some vintage and traditional elements. However, on this channel I don’t push my own design style. We discuss how to work with a multitude of styles because I love seeing people create or adopt a style that makes them happy.

The all wood room, the first room…add some shoji screens and Japanese accents or art, but simple, and off white accents and make a great Japandi or Japanese room! It already screams Asian and minimal Asian accents will be beautiful

No to the dark, moody vibe. I live in New England, where it’s dark for 8 months. I want light colors in my house. Even with lots of windows, my home suffers from dim light much of the winter. I am on a very tiny lot, so have shutters in the bedroom, dining area, and kitchen out of necessity. That robs me of light as I keep the bottom half shut. I feel color is the place where I can get moody worked in, in artwork and textiles.

The initial wood panelled room made me think of Halston's Montauk house (as seen in the TV show). He had large white paintings and white sofas with the wood paneling, and it was (naturally, given it's Halston's home) chic.

I love wood, but that first space has too much of it for me. I would have to pick either the walls or the floor, but i could not live with both. But... if its high-quality, then i couldnt rip it out or permanently alter it either. The ceiling looks a little Japanese to me, and I think I would lean into that. Cover a lot of that wood flooring with tatami mats or rugs that give a similar vibe. Then Japandi furniture/decor and bring in some plants. Or....more likely....get overwhelmed and live with it and hate it for 20 years and then sell it.

I like the wood paneling and everything but I do not like the chandelier. That's what makes it looks wrong at first. It messes with the ambience. For the neutral room, I just can't get with that one because I hate the rust colors. I don't like the 70s with those neutrals with the umber.

Everyone I've talked to is so over the mass-produced/ trendy trends. This year is the year for finding your style, not just picking which trends are your favorite. I made this mistake in years past, and no matter how beautiful my home was to everyone else, I HATED it! I received many compliments because it was atheistic, but not me. I've been with you from the beginning and always said your advice is timeless and unique. You know you must currate a space over time by layering your treasures, not a quick haul from a store to keep up with the Jones'. Love you Garrett 💙

Thanks so much! I appreciate your support. I’ve always advocated not jumping on trends unless one has really thought about it, and can truly say they love the trend and will still be happy with it when it’s no longer trending. Personally I love timeless and specially curated design, but I think it’s always great to take inspiration from trends and learn from them.

I think the wood paneled room needs a large modern paneling or textured wall hanging. I personally like a style that fits the home’s architecture but I respect the fact that they kept the paneling. I grew up in a modern wood and brick house and loved the natural materials that needed no repainting.

Of course traditional is here to stay, but what I have found is that there is relatively equal dislike across the board toward various design styles. It’s fine though. Different strokes for different folks.

Normally I love and agree with everything you say but that first room with the wood paneling and 1970s dining room table…..UGH!! It was dark, dated and dull. Even the ceiling was awful. I will admit that as far as wood paneling goes, the paneling in that picture was not bad. But, it was still pretty awful, dark and dank.
