Thanks for your detailed videos Mark, we're about to renovate our 1955 bathroom. Would you recommend mixing your own mortar or using the already made stuff for laying tile on the floor or walls?

@rhomis I forget the exact name of it, but it is a tool for scoring cement board and drywall. You can find it in the tool crib area of any large home improvement center store.

Super helpful information would’ve been what type of blades you’re using to cut those with.

Thanks for your reply. I've also been told I could use a toe kicker saw to make a clean cut....but now I don't know how hard it will be to remove the cement board even once the cut is made.

We're going to replace our ceramic tile floor with hardwood in our kitchen. We wanted to remove the tile and the cement backer board up to the cabinets but not under them. Will we be able to score the cement board and pull it up (perhaps using a shovel) just up to the cabinets so that we can lay the hardwood just up to the cabinet edge?

Nice. How do you cut backer mounted on a wall?, e.g. tub removal, left some damaged board that I wanted to remove then section in new pieces, preserving tile mounted above.

I have the option to buy either buy Hardie board or wonder board at my local HD. Does one work better than the other? Wonder board appears to be a little bit cheaper and weighs a little bit less. The big question is how is one to work with over the other?

Is there a preferred jigsaw blade?

It will be very difficult and you won't get a clean cut. However I think you will be able to do it as long as you use a very sharp and rugged cutter to score the backer board.

What kind of scoring knife? Is it a special tool for backer board?

Mixing your own thinset is easy to do and will hold up better than a pre-mixed mastic or equivalent. Just follow the directions carefully on the package.

Drill, scoring knife, jigsaw-----easy peasy!"

Is this method with the knife also working on Durock?

+MAD King Durock is cement board ... so YES this method works on Durock

Buy a hacksaw, feed the blade through the hole and reattach to the handle, then cut.

Doesn't work very well if you only need to cut off an inch of the entire board. Works well when you are cutting the board in half.
