    That’s great to hear, Melissa! It’s always nice to try new things. I’ve been seeing a Ghost Plant and Narrow-Leaf Chalksticks planted right out in the front of one of the houses that I pass by as I drive my son to school. Hers is just out there, even in the summer. They never suffer sun burn and they’re just there when it rains, without cover, and I got curious. That’s how I ended up doing the experiment. Thanks again for the comment. I really appreciate the support. I think your channel looks promising, too. That’s why I was offering to help when I left a comment in one of your videos. Sort of paying it forward, in gratitude for my viewers. I never got a reply back. But it’s okay, I think you can do it without my help. ❤️☺️🌈 I wish you the best. Let’s all hustle more in 2019. Hello Everyone, I highly suggest mixing pumice or perlite to coco pith. It makes it lighter, more fast draining and fast-drying. Right now, this is one of my favorite medium. I’m also leaning towards Bonsai Jack Gritty mix for esthetics. As I always say, don’t be afraid to try new things and test things out. Thank you! ❤️☺️🌈

    Hi Reena, I really would not suggest to use pots without drainage hole, but if you really must do it this way, I would suggest a mixture of cocopeat and perlite so that water can evaporate easily. Please take note that this is just for tiny pots like 2 to 3 inch ones. How big is your pot? If I may ask.

I have these beautiful clay animal planters, so planning to pot the haworthias using double potting method, to drain out the excess water. Will be using mixture of cocopeat and perlite for the soil. Hopefully that should work for haworthia indoors? Can I also use coarse Silica sand with the mix? Sorry for lots of questions and once again thank you.

    Hello Sheila! I have a large and ever growing succulent collection -not as prolific as yours due to lack of space and my mother saying that I'll turn her house into a greenhouse. I now live in the desert of northern Mexico where the temperature can be above 110⁰F. I've tried different soil mixes and the one my succulents love is 40% regular leaf soil, 25% perlite, 15% fertilizer (I use sheep's from Home Depot), 10% earthworm humus, 5% crushed pinetree bark and 5% tezontle (that red and porous volcanic pebbles). I add an extra 5% of coal power. I'm going to try replacing the bark with coconut fiber. What's the best soil mix for you (the reader)?

    Hi William, you can even mix tour potting soil to 50/50of the potting mix and coco peat. I’ve seen succulent pots with 100% coco peat and the succulents are very fat. If perlite is not available, try pumice bits. But if you already have coco peat in your mixture, it would also help with air circulation. This is a very good question. Thank you for asking. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

  • @SucculentFame

    Hi! I have 4 Lithops. They’re still alive. 😁 I haven’t watered them since I got them in July last year. That’s the main thing. They probably will only need to be watered in July this year, too. 😃 That’s the best advice. Never water until you see them getting very wrinkly. I’m making a video about them soon. Not the next video though, but I will surely make one in the future. It feels great when I see them surviving in my care...or maybe the better term is in my neglect...😃 Caring of them is just admiring them every single day. 😁 Thank you for asking this question. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

  • @hughmse

    @hughmse

    The best soil mix for lithops and pleiospilos is 9 parts of your favorite volcanic rock like pumice (works great with perlite too) and 1 part of your customized succulent substratum. I have my collection in a glass terrarium with layers. Bottom part is black soil for contrast, which I put in and watered, compacted and let dry. I added a thin layer of the finest marble pebbles I found (which I also often use as the base for tillandsias in terrariums because it provides support for the branches I put in). At least half of my terrarium is the 9/1 soil mix because, as you know, both lithops and pleiospilos have LONG roots. Considering that they're endemic to the mountains of the West Cape province in South Africa, I do as Sheila says in terms of watering. Be careful with sun exposure! You have to acclimatize them for at least 6 weeks starting with 1 hour of morning sun/week +1 hour the next week and so on. It's DEVASTATING when their top leaves burn since these are extremely slow growing yet amazingly beautiful succulents. PS. Seed mixes have a high germination rate so good luck!!!

I use this mix to grow my succulent and the plant wasn't dry out fast (more like a week to get dry). Any advice? When you water your plant, how many days it should dry out completely. Compare to store-bought mix, it was dry for a day which I think it might be better. But they ran out of the mix now.

This is regardless of the soil that you are planning to use. If it does have a drainage hole, you can certainly add perlite to coco peat/coir, especially if you want more drain-ability. Shiela you didn’t add anything else to the coco coir block? Succulents and Sunshine mix is 1/2 coco + 1/2 Pumice or Turface or Crushed granite. I would like to experiment with coco coir. I have been adding dry stall to the succulent dirt I buy from Lowe’s.

  • @SucculentFame

    @SucculentFame

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I didn’t. Pure coco coir requires very little water ‘cause it absorbs water really fast. I should’ve have mentioned it in the video. I’ve seen it from a big grower. Watering is a bit tricky. It is not advisable for individuals who are likely to water too much. I’ve created this video awhile back, but as far as I remember, I think I even showed one that I took out of the pot to show on cam how it’s pure coco coir. Or at least I think I did. 😃 And recently, I’ve been also starting to plant my succulents in the ground. ‘Cause the ones I planted in August or September last year have been fatter. And they have been planted in just whatever soil we had in our backyard. They’re just out there, rain or shine. It seems like they like it better being left in the wild. I think, them being in pots is way too limiting and controlled. I’m still trying to figure out how they are fatter. 😁 I guess, bottom line is don’t be afraid to try new things. Thank for asking. I really appreciate it. Blessings to you! ❤️☺️🌈

    Succulent Fame I think I will try a pot of pure coco coir and one with Turface called Oil-dri from an auto parts store. I also experiment with dry stall Debra Baldwin’s soil recipe. I can’t find pumice locally so I use dry stall instead from a feed store, which is a fine pumice. At least that is what the internet says.

  • @SucculentFame

    @SucculentFame

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think Lowe’s sell perlites. They come in green bags. Or maybe it’s Home Depot or both. 😃 Perlite works just like pumice. I’m starting to like coco coir for my succulents in pots. It’s just too time consuming to change out soil in all the pots but I will save so much water and watering time if all of them will be planted in coco coir. It will probably be too expensive too ‘cause I have too many. Coco coir absorbs water really fast. Just remember that brief spray of water from your hose that’s set on full does the trick. It’s really just fast and brief watering for coco coir. That’s how fast they absorb water. If it doesn’t snow where you’re at, planting them in the ground would be a great option. Thanks again, Connie! ❤️😃

    I suggest 60/40 or 50/50 coco coir/perlite ratio depending on how dense your coco fiber is. This also still depends on the succulent. Some succulents would still require even less watering. Thank you. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

    Hi Sheila, thanks for the video. 😊 I hadn't thought of using coir for a planting medium, but I think it looks very interesting, especially promising for young plants in small pots, perhaps. The commercial cactus and succulent mixes here in Australia are horrible, once they dry out they're very hard to get water into, so I have been making it myself. Have a very Happy Christmas, and I look forward to seeing more videos next year! 😊 🎅🎄🦌

    I totally agree with you. Cactus soil mixes seems to not want to absorb water at all once they’ve dried out. I’ve seen sellers use coir. That’s how I got interested in trying it out. Merry Christmas to you, too! Thank you so much for the greeting and for leaving a comment on my video. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

    Hi Nelia, I have tried using raw rice husks; they drain fast but they tend to hold too much water. I killed a lot of succs because of it. But charcoal rice husks (rice husks that had been burnt and becomes black) then to be drier. Though it still has to be mixed with river sand or pumice. Akadama soil also works well, but golly they are so expensive.

    Coco peat has negligible, in fact almost no nutrients. It might drain well but also holds on to water/moisture. I don't know how your succulents are growing in coco peat alone.

  • @SucculentFame

    @SucculentFame

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hello! That’s a really good point. I suggest adding perlite to improve drainage. As for nutrients, all organic materials degrade to provide food for plants. It may not be infused with as much chemical fertilizers as commercial cactus soil mixes, but it will still provide food for plants. In drier seasons such as spring and summer, coco peat are really great. In the Fall and winter, it requires less water and less watering. There is just a different way of watering with coco peat. Bottom watering is definitely not an option, ‘cause it will be too soaked. This is great for individuals who are likely to water lightly, such as those who use misting as a form of watering. Thank you for this comment. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈
