One question from a newbie: If I wanted to pick one channel, say a highlights channel or a midtones channel and turn all of the selected pixels in that channel flourscent green, would that be possible? For painting from a photo, I would like to be able to visually isolate where in the image the various tones are located to assist with the correct tonal representation within my painting. Thanks!

    Quick question : When you create [light-1], then you invert the selction to get [dark-1], you should have exactly the opposite selection, [light-1] + [dark-1] should give the same selction than cmd+A. But when you [cmd+A] - [light-1] - [dark-1] you end-up with midtone-1 !!! very confusing for me. I checked [light-1] vs [dark-1] in a photo, and the addition of each pixel brightness/luminance always give 100%. Could you give us more details on those selction ?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    Intersecting masks is not the same as simple math would imply. Try subtracting just lights from all (cmd-A) to compare.

  • @gregbenzphotography

    Joel- The marching ants show the point where the selection is only 50%, but you can certainly have a lot of areas that are partially selected beyond the ants. Just a 10-40% selection is typically plenty for adjustments to be very visible. (KZread/Google isn't letting me use +name or reply for Joel's comment... anyone know why?)

    Hey Greg, first of all thanks for this introduction to an interesting editing technique, it was new to me! One thing i don't understand is that in your "Make Skies pop with LM" video you are talking about the channel-masks being inverted (black reveals, white conceals), whereas here your masks are white-reveals-black-conceals just as a regular layer mask. Whats up with this?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    8 жыл бұрын

    White always reveals in a mask. However, you can change the setting that controls the visual representation of a channel (i.e., invert the display), which I inadvertently did in a couple of my older videos. You either double-click or right-click on a channel's thumbnail (I forget which right at the moment) to change the display setting. And again, this is for channels, not masks.

    This is quite brilliant, actually. I have just discovered luminosity masks, and I wonder why I did not do so earlier. I have seen luminosity masks being used only in PS. Are you thinking of, or is it possible to, develop them for Lightroom?

    It is not possible in the current design of Lightroom, though the white/black/highlight/shadow brush adjustments are analogous (but extremely limited in comparison).

    Hi Greg, I just started to learn luminosity masks from your videos. Thank you. I have a couple of questions: 1. At what point in the editing process do you apply luminosity masks? Is it the very first thing you do, is it after you've done some other thing that will trigger whether your image would benefit from a luminosity mask, or another point in the process? Do you always follow such a rule or is your process completely image dependent? 2. Does a luminosity mask replace other adjustments you would otherwise make? If I use a luminosity mask, should I still expect to make adjustments with the curves, exposure, levels, or other tools in PS or various sliders in LR, or is the use of tools in PS or LR following luminosity masking strictly a personal preference to continue to fine tune?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Matt- 1- anytime. These are tools for more precise selections and masks. They can be used at any stage of your work in Photoshop. And with RAW Smart Objects, can be mixed with ongoing RAW adjustments. 2- along the same lines, these are just tools for precision, they don’t adjust the image on their own - they control where your adjustments are visible. However, they work best when the adjustments are done thinking systemically, and how you approach one affects the other. It’s a learning process that will evolve as you dig in.

  • @gregbenzphotography

    The result is vastly different for all but L1. As an example, L4 would select very bright things like a sunset. D4 would select very dark things like deep shadows. But neither would select a huge range of midtones. If you were to invert one of these, you’d include all those midtones and get a vastly more expensive selection than just L4 or D4.

    Greg, Thanks for you super quick response. I honestly thought I'd check back in a few days and see if anyone said anything. You responded in minutes!!! Your tutorial was very well done and I thought it had worked because I opened as administrator and went through all the steps. I did have to go find the file elsewhere and when I was done it said it was installed. I shut down PS waited a few minutes and opened PS went to the Windows drop down menu gave Extensions a minute to make sure it was loaded, opened extensions and the panel was not there. I believe the problem is that I have a seperate account on my computer for Admin use that requires a password to log in, this is to help prevent viruses and malware since 80% of those kinds of things require admin permission to install and if I'm not logged in as admin they won't install. When I opened PS as administrator as you said to do in the tutorial it did require me to enter my admin password and when PS opened it looked differently from when it normally opens. To find the file I had to go searching in the non-admin folders to find it, but as stated above, I did find it and installed it. I have a suspicion that if I opened it under the Administrator log in the panel would be there, but I don't want to open it under the Administrator admin every time. Any ideas to fix this?

    ***** Greg, I think I figured it out, with respect to how to stop the entire macro, and bring up the individual steps and dialogue boxes...phenomenal! I am literally thinking of all the utility these may hold, such as sharpening, selectively adjusting EVERYTHING. One thing I love about doing sharpening in LR, is when you can hit the option key, and see the mask taking effect on the photo in LR, so that it can apply sharpening only to sharp edges, and not skin per se. How would you propose applying the luminosity masks to accomplish this feat?

  • @gregbenzphotography
