Restoring Sunset Colors with Luminosity Masks in Photoshop

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this Photoshop tutorial, I'll show you how to use luminosity masks to add vibrant colors back into a dull sunset sky. Please note that while I add quite a bit of pink to the sky in this demo, this technique can be modified to be as subtle or as strong as you like for your own work.
Key Segments:
0:00 Summary of image prep before adding color to the sky.
4:52 Pink Sky using my free channel-based luminosity masks
12:05 Pink Sky using Lumenzia
My basic approach (using my free luminosity masks) is:
(1) Create the channel masks
(2) Add a solid fill layer, set to the desired hue, with brightness and saturation maxed out at 100
(3) Change the solid fill layer to "soft light" blend mode
(4) Add a black mask to the solid fill layer
(5) Load the appropriate lights mask as a selection (to get a good selection of the clouds, but not the buildings)
(6) Paint through the luminosity selection with a white brush to create a luminosity mask in the targeted clouds/sky
(7) Optional: Duplicate the solid fill layer if needed for extra color, or reduce its opacity for less
(8) Delete the channel masks
My basic approach (using Lumenzia) is:
(1) Select the sky with the "quick mask" tool in Photoshop
(2) Click on the desired luminosity mask in Lumenzia
(3) Click "color" to load a solid fill layer via Lumenzia (this will automatically set the blend mode and apply the luminosity mask in the selected area with a feather to ensure a smooth/natural look)
(4) Optional: Duplicate the solid fill layer if needed for extra color, or reduce its opacity for less
Note that you could also use the same technique described above (painting with a white brush through a selection) with Lumenzia, but it is often much faster and easier to just use a simple selection with Lumenzia to determine where the luminosity mask will be applied. I do sometime use that painting approach however, as it can be used for extremely fine control over how the mask is applied locally, or for situations where you might want to paint through multiple selections to deal with a complex image.

    This by far is the best explanation about luminosity masks and how to use them that I have seen. Some other guys have them etc but they either talk so fast or go back and forth that you really can't grasp their explanation. Thanks for making this video, it's very easy to follow for us Forest Gump types. I'll watch it several times to make sure I catch it all.

    The more I watch and study your videos the more I understand how Lumenzia and masking are incredibly powerful tools. Your videos are exceptionally well done as is your teaching style. Thanks for including your step-by-step instructions in your latest email. I'd always watch your videos straight through. Then I'd watch again like this: watch-pause-watch-pause-watch-pause until the end...at each pause I'd add information for my step-by-step reference for future use. Thanks so much Greg.

    Im so happy I found your channel! You gave the best explanation of luminosity masks to date. One small suggestion...if you are going to go through all of that effort to create such a beautiful image, take another minute and straighten the verticals on the buildings and the bridge. Thank you for a great tutorial!

    Question, did you start with two different exposures out of the camera or could you duplicate the original layer and run an exposure adjustment just for the use in creating a mask?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    +Harry Brimberry Separate exposure. I like to shoot brackets whenever possible, opens up much more potential dynamic range opportunities.

    Do you think it looks more realistic to control the solid color fill layer with a luminosity mask as described in the video (as you may then add color to places that are equally bright but not necessarily the same color) or to "control" the solid color fill layer with an actual color mask of the same color?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    7 жыл бұрын

    Brian Divelbiss a color mask won't work if there isn't sufficient color already. A luminosity mask can easily be restricted to keep it from hitting all areas of similar luminosity (a group mask is perfect for that, but you can paint black right on the luminosity mask too).

    Is Lumenzia as good in non-contrasted images ? for example in mid-day images ? Can you demo such an image ? I do architectural visualizations and most are mid-day Sun so I am wondering how if at it can improve my renders ? Cheers.

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    8 жыл бұрын

    What do you mean by "non-contrasted"? Mid-day sun sounds like "high contrast" to me. If so, you can certainly use it to help reduce contrast and extend dynamic range. But luminosity masks implicitly work with what you have in the image. So you can make shadows stronger or weaker, but not necessarily harder or softer (though weakening a shadow may appear to make it softer to a point - certainly less distracting). A key use of luminosity masks in mid-day sun would be to restore exterior details seen through windows (extend dynamic range by blending exposures).

    So how does luminosity masks compare to HDR photography?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    7 жыл бұрын

    Luminosity masks can be used to increase dynamic range (like HDR), but can produce a more controlled and high quality work. However, they require more skill to master. Additionally, they can be used for numerous other things beyond what HDR is intended to do (dodging and burning, isolated changes in a single impact, etc). Ultimately, luminosity masks can do substantially more, but with that capability comes a steeper learning curve.

    Greg Benz so in short: luminosity masks are an advanced HDR method :) I'm going to try it out. Looks like a real fun method to play with.

  • @gregbenzphotography

    pdebie1982 yes, but they are also much more. Even if you aren't expanding dynamic range, they have numerous uses.

    It would be far more realistic, technique aside, if the colour of light emanating from the sunset into the sky was the same colour as that being reflected from the sky into the water. The sky below the apex of the bridge arch is a deep golden colour, then above the bridge its pink. Looks completely bogus in my opinion.

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    Captain Barnacles looks at the before image. The golden color is in the original. Rest area of water is a reflection of the far sunset sky, not the overhead sky.

    I till think it'd be far more realistic with gold in the sky than pink. Where's the pink coming from?

  • @gregbenzphotography

    @gregbenzphotography

    6 жыл бұрын

    Painted in, as shown in the video, but that it was that color and there is faint pink in the RAW. The sky was a brilliant pink moments before I captured this image. I had a tripod issue, so I missed the leak light. I punched up the amount of color a bit, but it truly isn’t that far off what I saw. It was a brilliant night with many colors, despite the dull look of the RAW starting point. Not the kind of conditions that occur often, and splitting the sky with the bridge makes things seem more drastic Because you’d don’t see the color transition from gold to pink.
