    Try 'Lumenzia' luminosity panel/extension. Less layers used with better results + individual luminosity, color, saturation, ...etc. masks. Also exposure blending, what you did here + luminosity mask sliders. That's the leading luminosity panel and leaves no wish open.

    You know how there are a lot of tutorials out there, most of which you learn a little something if you are lucky-- this is not one of those. I have used Photoshop on and off for many years-- since about 1989; and this video has a lot of very useful information, which I had not specifically learned before... equally important, you put it all in usable context and examples. Thank you so much for sharing this, and I wanted to say, AWESOME JOB!

Imagine being able to stream youtube tuts directly in a window inside photoshop. That would free up some screen when following along your videos.

    Nice explaination and I like the application to the various adjustment layers... very helpful, thank you! 🙌🏻 What would the midtone masks be good for?

  • @tutvid

    @tutvid

    5 жыл бұрын

    Basically any time you wanted to add something to the midtones. Think about your histogram. All that stuff in the middle is midtones. So let's say you wanted to increase the contrast of that stuff and not blow out the highlights and shadows, you could do that with a midtone luma mask. Maybe you want to increase the brightness of the midtones to add punchiness to the image. Midtone luma mask. Maybe you want to increase or decrease the saturation of the image, but you don't want your shadows to get milky or contaminated with color. Midtone luma mask. I'll start working on another video for the midtone luma masks. They're super helpful in their own rite!

Also as an FYI there is an issue with your discord link. Keep the great work up.

    thanks for this valuable lesson!! One thing that doesn't work: I have a focus stack. So I alligned all the layers, blended them to a all-in-focus pic and then converted the two layers into a smart object. from there on I made the 8 Alpha channels. Now the two smart object copies wont open in CameraRaw. Is this because there is a focus stack behind?

    Your handling of luminance masks sounds very good, so decided to use it. I went through the video again, and everything was fine until I started to try to mask for the shadows. Here are some questions: When you were constricting highlights, you used ctrl-shift-alt-click on RGB and continued that for all subsequent new channels. But when you were constricting shadows, you used ctrl-click on RGB in first step, then ctrl-alt-click RGB after that. Is this correct? When you were constricting highlights, your next step was click on new channel, then Ctrl-I. But when you were constricting shadows, you changed the steps for subsequent constrictions to ctrl-alt-click RGB --> new channel --> ctrl-D. This would result in a black screen, so I tried using ctrl-I as on the first procedure for shadows. Is any part of this incorrect? I tried several ways to do the shadows but results were inconsistent. Cannot figure out what is the right way to do the shadows! You were moving fast, but I used pause and took notes. Hope you can help me with this.

    TIL the reason why some of my more complex work files require to be saved as PSB. I use channels to select and mask everything that’s not a clear edge (hair, depth of field,...). I never figured masks / saved channels could be the culprit. Here I was turning everything to raster later on during my edits. 🤦🏼‍♂️

    Leave that clarity slider alone... dehaze does a much better job on this sort of image, even if there's no obvious haze. It'll also give you the contrast boost you wanted. I also try saturation before vibrance when there aren't any skin tones or already highly-saturated colours in the image that I want to protect.

    You need to right-click the smart object and choose "New Smart Object via Copy" and not just do a Ctrl + J copy. Ctrl + J duplicates an instance of the Smart Object so when one changes, they all change. Creating a new Smart Object "via copy" creates a new Smart Object altogether. Hope that helps!

    Basically an HDR photo?

    Yes in so far as it is literally a "High Dynamic Range" image. Our eyes can see much more dynamic range than the camera sensors. This way you can choose how much dynamic range your image has AND not get the nasty halos, fake Clarity-looking effects, and artifacting that we saw when bad HDR was trendy.

    It does everything for you. But there are people that would like to broaden their skills and knowledge in photoshop. Instead of letting a computer do everything for them.

    That's it, I'm going to ask KZread for a 'Love' button. 'Thumb-up' in such cases feels like luminosity masking my gratitute away. Thank you!

    Very enlightening. However, it would have been more effective had you spoken more slowly.

    I'm always impressed how much information he can pack into a video. Either pause the video every minute to catch up, like I do, or Settings > Playback Speed > 0.75
