Go to " settings" in your shop, seclect " allow custom orders" , this will allow you to make private ( via messages only ) custom orders 1 0n 1 with that 1 customer, that way you dont have to make your private orders public, once you seclect " allow custom orders" , a " Create custom order" option will be avliable in the top right hand side of your screen when in messages ( which is where custom orders are conducted )

It's scary at first and then you just DO IT and realize it's gonna be ok! and you'll make mistakes. we all do. Just make sure you have good customer service and if you make a mistake with a customer it'll be ok. The customers I've encountered are always VERY nice: I feel like there's a specific type of person that chooses to shop small and buy from a small business and they are understanding patient people. You got this!

Thank you!! I've always used the "create custom order" button in messages but I've been frustrated with how poorly the process is set up. I've been hesitant to set up private listings this way b/c of how buyer focused Etsy is and it's not how they say to do it. This is going to be my new process. Thanks again.

Hi Brittany, I love your channel! But I do have a question about digital files. I am new to Etsy, so bare with me. I’m pretty sure that this video is exactly everything I need but I just wanted to run it by you. I have a digital file that I am selling and I’m offering to place a person’s picture on my digital file basically transpose it onto the photo. Do I have to create a listing like what you are talking about in this video? That seems like what I need to do. but again like I said, I am new and when I’m going through each thing on Etsy and it’s confusing me. So that once I have a agreement with a customer, then she will go to that particular link and pay for that option. Is that correct? Thank you Brittany!

Great video!! Was a bit confused at the payment field. Has the customer paid for the original listing? Then sends you a msg asking for a custom version (you set the price as $0 in the video) for the private listing, then they click the url for the custom version. OR Are they just sending you a msg, you set up the Private listing and actually enter the $amount, then they pay? I guess my question is did you set the $0 just for recording the video as a sample to viewers and that is why you didn’t set a price? Wondering because if you did set at $0 and another customer clicked on it, you would be selling it for free. Thank you for taking the time to answer these comments!

Hi there! great question. Usually what happens (at least in my experience) is the customer will direct message me asking for a custom piece before ordering anything. There is the risk that I would generate the custom listing only for the customer to not purchase it but that's only happened to me once. Hope that clears it up :)

Hi Brittany, thanks for the video. I was curious how you were going to make it a "true" private listing. So when the customer messages there is a small button in the message area to create a private listing. Anyways love the content, I sell wall art on Etsy too. :)

No I set the quantity of the "SKU" (listing) to 1, that way when one person purchases it it will be "Out of Stock" and will go away from my store
