It’s a complex thing, I think. I like to consider myself a creator rather than an artist, because I feel things should have a purpose, even if the purpose is to be beautiful - and real ART with a capital A very often isn’t beautiful in my eyes. Big subject!!!

Diane, I'm always so happy when I have a slow moving morning and check your channel to see a fresh new video from you! Today is one of those days. I took a quick glance at this video and will be painting along with you after I get a bit of breakfast in my belly :) Your vintage style always warms me and I love the stationary idea. Stationary seems like such a lost art. Thank you for bringing it back to life! How sweet would it be for someone to receive a hand painted piece of stationary in the mail with a sentimental note and even a bookmark included. Thank you for the inspiration and I look forward to catching up with you later today xo

Hey Diane. Around the 14 min mark of the video you talked about being an artist (or not being an artist...LOL), copying, trying to do the same as you...etc. I have never been able to replicate your style - I have a different style - but your videos give me great ideas and ways to create that I wouldn't have thought about. You say you don't consider yourself an artist all the time - but I think that whether a person is creating a piece of their own (or just doodling around) or if you are following a tutorial - that you are an artist - you are creating - creating art. I believe you are a fabulous artist - you have a style that is very unique and refreshing & I so enjoy having a cup of tea and watching and listening to your videos (I watch you first thing in the morning after I have fed my dogs and am sitting enjoying my first cup of coffee). So - thank you. You always give me a great start to my day, and you get my creative juices flowing as well. Take care.

Hi Anne, thanks so much for your affirmative comments!! It’s lovely of you to say such kind things. I suppose I just think of artists as being a bit high-falluting and serious about their work, holding exhibitions, selling big paintings for large sums, having an illegible signature and so on. Or maybe I think of them as being professional, working on art from an early age as a living. Or a bit of both. I’m probably wrong about this, but I like the word that KZread uses for us - “creators” - we are creating something that didn’t exist before, and if that brings some joy into the life of someone I’m happy too! So glad you enjoy the videos, I believe you are a wonderful friend and I’m honoured! Xxxx

I love every one of your videos, Diane. Thank you for sharing your creativity and artistry with us. I bought my Mother a glass blowing lesson for her birthday. I am going to make something like this for her card to let her know about it. I am going to write the details of the lesson on it instead of the poem. Also….thank you for telling us that when something we made doesn’t come out the same as yours that it’s because we aren’t you and that our individuality is being expressed in our creations. Love from Canada!

Searched your videos and found this. I will be making a flower cheat sheet. I try to match the color palette to the recipient - I may line up three or four palettes with one set of flowers. Thoreau is always interesting. If you have not read Annie Dillard I recommend her.

I am interested in the ink you are using, it appears to be water soluble. My father was a lettering artist and used India ink, very permanent! I inherited his pens, various nibs. I have not attempted to use them in years. It is interesting to see them used in drawing. I do a lot of pen and ink with Micron pens. Your videos are such an inspiration. I look forward to every one, using your techniques. Thank you so much. 😊

Hi Linda and thanks for your comments. My pens came from a friend who had been a graphic designer before the days of computers and he used all sorts of pens. I’m lucky to have inherited his collection and I try to use them to honour them a little. Also more eco friendly I suppose. I think the ink is not soluble, it is made from shellac and has a shine to it when dry, it also makes interesting tracks when it hits wet paint. Hope you continue to enjoy your pens!

Edward Estlin Cummins, was indeed a man, was born October 14, 1894… and I was so obsessed with him in the 10 grade that, I refused to use capitals for almost the whole year, (and got sent to principle’s office more than once by my English teacher)… …The first time,I received a weeks’s detention, from the Proncipal,(and more than a few bad grades, based on not using capitals or punctuation!🤦‍♀️) ….the second time, the principal was not in school and the Vice principal, (Who loved books).. told me a story about “ stealing” another author’s style, ….As it was not being creative, but being lazy!!… …That my style would be better found, in my own brain, in my own time… She sent me back to class, with no punishment whatsoever, but had extracted a promise from me to not plagiarize any one’s ideas in either art class or writing, (as mine was bond to better in the long run.😊)… Loved her teaching style, by the way❤

Diane, this is such a beautiful tutorial. Thank you!! I have a gorgeous calligraphy pen and ink set that I’ve always been afraid to use. I will definitely be trying it out soon. I have to ask, when dipping the pen into the ink, do you clean it before going into the next color? Also, I have to thank you for the wonderful book recommendations at Christmas time. I received 3 of them and absolutely love them. I will be heading to your bookshelf on Amazon now ❤

Hi Cindy and thanks for your lovely message! So glad you are happy with the books you received! I’ve just placed an order for a few more that I’ll be talking about soon, so you’ll be finding a video coming up which might interest you. Re the ink pen, I was being very slapdash with the ink and allowing it to mix a bit on the pen. I probably ought to wash it in between changing colors, but I’m too impatient. I don’t think it would taint the colors too much! But it’s a matter of personal style I think. The only thing I wouldn’t do is to mix different brands or types. For example if you were using Indian Ink or Acrylic Ink I wouldn’t let it mix with the Sennelier traditional ink. It might clog up. Maybe. Hope this helps and happy painting!

Thats beautiful! These bookmarks are a thinner width than previous ones you've done. Also could you just use a thin brush instead an ink pen?

Hi Lori, yes, I think it was! Quite nice to have lightweight ones sometimes. And yes, I think you could easily use a brush instead of a pen. You would have to make sure you wash the brush out though after you’ve used it! Ink is the devil.

Hi there, I haven’t really investigated the folk art tradition but it does seem to be influencing a lot of the art we see around us these days. I will look into it!

I love my penwork... And they are fine for drawing on paper then maybe coming in with water color after i've done the penwork or coloring the image with another medium like colored pencils.. But when i go over paint like water color or acrylic even if i'm sure the paint is completely dry it still ruins them in very short order.. This is so frustrating and disappointing as i love the look .... So after watching a video of yours where you used the calligraphy pens and ink i went out and bought some... and there they have sat unused.. So i'm excited you are thinking of doing more video with inking this way. Hopefully it will encourage me.. Hugs! deb

I completely agree with all of that Deb!! And with a dip pen you can make the running and bleeding of the ink into a real creative virtue (without ruining then pen...) like I tried out with these butterflies, which you may not have seen yet? kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4Z6l9dsccuTaLw.html

That should have read . . I haven't tried one" !! My boys gave me a good for Christmas on making your own inks so that is a current project. Happy accidents in watercolours? You should try DIY inks! First two I have made? The red ink changed to green on paper and the magenta changed to blue on the paper. 😂

Hi Diane just about to watch this video but just had to say, I dont think its an old fashioned idea at all. I compare pen & ink to ebooks and real books. Just sometimes its nice to feel a quality item in your hand. There's nothing like the feel of say a fountain pen compared to a biro.....if you know what I mean. I can compare it to your garden for the folks out there...much nicer, more pleasurable to go gather your own eggs and herbs and veges from your garden than to duck down to the supermarket and pick them off the shelf🤭🤗..gosh she can waffle on..sorry Diane..on with the show🙂

Hi Jenny and thanks so much for your lovely message. The more I think about it, and all the waste involved, the more I feel disinclined to use the fine liners and gel pens. I never used them until I started with KZread and discovered them for the first time, and I did find them very liberating. However, I am worried about the quality of the pens, the waste of plastic and the minute amount of ink that is contained within those plastic barrels we hold. Scandalously expensive. SO, (it’s my turn to ramble on!!!) I am going to try to go back to « real » pens be they fountain pens or dip pens, and to use metallic paint instead of metallic pens. Just my little bit for the environment! And yes, there is nothing to beat collecting your own produce from the garden! Hard work, but so worth it!!! Thanks again and all the best xxxxx
