I've always been taught to dry paint before adding crackle medium, then let that dry before adding next coat of paint of either same colour or contrast. Always get a good crackle finish this way

Yes, you need to dry in between layers with the Decoart Glaze. If you use either PVA or Mod Podge the paint needs to be applied to wet glue or the crackles won’t work. I could’t get any crackles to appear either way with the Docrafts glaze unfortunately.

@@NinaRibenaMixedMedia when I used it (a few years back) you can let it dry partway, just enough to be able to brush over it. I seem to remember it wasn’t necessary to do it when Pva was goopy wet.

Interesting video, thanks. I used to do crackle glaze when renovating old furniture. I can’t remember the brand but I always remember getting much better results when I painted the crackle glaze and topcoat at right angles to one another. Drying naturally gave a smaller crack and drying with a hairdryer gave a larger crack, so I hairdryered some bit as and left the others to dry out naturally. It gave a great finish which I could then wax with a clear or antique wax finish.

I really enjoyed this survey of various crackle mediums. I recently used the Liquitex Acrylic Mediums Crackle paste. The instructions were to mix the paste no more than 10-15% acrylic paint. Also, the use of a strong substrate was emphasized. The example given used a sheet of wood. As you mentioned the directions also called for natural drying - not even a fan - to bring out the crackling. I do wish you had used a very thin layer of white acrylic to bring out the crackling fully. I’ll definitely be using Modge Podge or PVA next time. Thanks for the info and demonstrations!

Hi. I have just watched your video. Great information. Thanks for sharing. I was at art college 10 years ago and I was wanting a crackle affect. What really worked for me after many experimentations was Vaseline. Sanding first to roughen the surface, acrylic paint, medium coating of Vaseline, acrylic paint on top. Let it dry overnight. Next day I had some fantastic results. If there is some Vaseline seeping through the cracks I would remove it with a cotton bud. Taking care not to spoil your cracks. I would very interested to hear your thoughts and whether you would fancy trying it yourself. Hope you don't mind me sharing one of my art techniques. Deborah 😊

the crackle glaze is fabulous used on a lighter background and then rubbed with a darker stain, not a paint. As for the crackle paste, it gets better cracks when it isn't applied quite so thick. Impressed with the ModPodge used with paint for a more colorful crackle. :)

I've used the same crackle medium for years, but not those you used and have worked beautifully every time. I did a base coat (not too thick) and let it dry. Applied crackle medium, again not too thick, but thicker than the paint and let it dry. Then applied a contrasting color and as it dried, the cracking appeared. I found that I could brush the contrasting color in different directions, but not over lapping and I'd get a multi crackle in different directions. The brand I use is FolkArt Crackle Mudium in bottle.. I used no heat gun.

Oh no! Its important to apply the paint to a thick layer of Mod Mod whilst its still wet. You also need to apply the paint with a light touch so it sits on top of the glue without being worked into it. Then dry naturally. It can take a couple of hours for the cracks to show depending on the thickness of the paint layer applied.

I think that might be the problem. I seem to remember hearing it doesn’t work with metallic paint, so perhaps pearl doesn’t work either, although don’t hold me to that. All crackle paste I have tried, have all worked. When they say a thick coat, I don't think it should have been, that thick, of a coat.......... and paint quality helps. If it looks thin and you can see through it, after a single coat. It's probably not a good paint to use. My favorite is to use a gold paint on the bottom. Then the crackle medium. Then the paint color of my choice. Try using not so thick of a coat. Otherwise, you are just drying gloppy gloops......... crackle works by one product drying faster than the other product............

Thanks Paula. I will definitely try it with gold paint as a base. During my experiments yesterday, I found the thicker the layer of medium I applied, the larger the cracks were. I achieved great results with 4 of the products and the only product that didn’t work was the Docraft Artiste which I tried applying several different ways. I also found that cheap craft paint worked best as they were more fluid. The heavier bodied paints didn’t really work as they were too thick.

I always let each layer dry and never have any trouble, been doing it thus way for more years than I care to remember and the jars I have at the moment, say to dry the layers

I find it is in how the paint dries after the first two layers dry. I have used both glue and Tim holtz's crackle paste and never failed. Remember dry between each layer and apply a thick coat each time. Smaller cracks happen with thinner layers of the medium.

Thanks Charlotte. If you are using either PVA glue or Pod Podge, you need to apply the paint over wet glue. If the glue dries before you add the paint, the crackles won’t work.

Hmmm, when I have used crackle medium I have always let the medium dry first, then added the layer of paint. Maybe I have been misreading the directions! I was doing it on wooden furniture though. Good video!

Hi Cindy, the Decoart Glaze tells you to dry in between layers which I did and it worked beautifully. If you are using PVA or Mod Podge the paint needs to be applied before the glue dries or it won’t work. I couldn’t get the Docrafts one to work either way unfortunately.

Not sure if anyone left this reply if they did I apologize for being repetitive. I have seen crackle school glue videos and they all stated do not paint it on but pull it down top to bottom. That’s for both the glue and the paint but it looked like you used that method with your paint. One other thing not sure if it was you or another video that said this but use a cheap brush. Cheap brushes will leave lines and the more lines, the more crackles, or so they say? I’m only leaving this because you stated you had issues with it and it looked like you were “painting” the glue. I know it’s a late reply so maybe you have become more of a crackle expert, I hope so. I too struggle with a lack of crackle ability so I’ll watch a few more videos until I feel a bit more confident, I’m tired of losing to it. Thanks for your video it was very helpful and gave me a tiny bit more confidence. I wish you much happy crackling in your future.

On the first creation, shouldn't there be one matte coat of paint...or paint a good layer on an already painted and dried object. After the crackle dries, the top contrast color should be matte, as well. Am I going crazy or did you paint two of the same color without drying?

TBH I was a bit confused about why you were applying wet on wet on wet? From what understand with all the different branded products I've used, each separate layer should be dried before the next is put on top. Also, some products/brands are supposed to be air-dried and others are manufactured to be tolerant of heat drying so final results depend on individual products used. But, I'm really surprised at the results with the glues, I'll have to try that too. TFS :)
