How To Couple & UnCouple Class 1 (Cat C+E) For Your Test! Drivers POV.

Today i'm going through the coupling & un-coupling procedure doing EVERYTHING you need to do to pass your test. This is very basic but has some VERY important parts you NEED to follow to pass!
This video covers them all from the drivers Point Of View so you can see it all as i do it.
Hope it helps & you enjoy the video!

Great video mate. I know you're just showing how you were taught but it's good practice to lower the suspension before you pull away from the trailer. For a few reasons. You won't damage/get scrape marks all over the rear arches on the back wheels (particularly on show trucks), lowering the suspension also helps keep the kingpin grease from getting all over the trailer neck and scraping it could mean it goes all over your catwalk when hitching back up. It's hard to get off again. Another reason for lowering suspension is that the trailer dropping down like that (particularly when fully loaded) could damage the landing legs. You might have done this off camera but just wanted to let you know mate. 👌 Some employers would go mad if they saw you drop the trailer like that 😂 Congratulations again on passing mate! See you on the roads soon hopefully.

Another great Video. I did my C+E in a Drawbar Combo so the coupling was slightly different but we talked through the differences with a 5th wheel set up so hopefully, I can remember when the time comes. In my test when I went to the 'never before seen' trailer the first thing I did was check the brake. As soon as I did it the instructor said, 'I'll save you some time, let's pretend you have completed all the checks' and told me to crack on with coupling up. Luckily out instructor had taught us to walk the long way to the cab so I ran through a mental checklist to make sure I wasn't skipping anything!

That's our contacting and storage depot behind that trailer next door! I knew the address was familiar when you showed that invoice for your training. Hope Red Rose see that you are a good advert for their company they may even use your videos in the future, who knows. I can actually envisage you becoming a driver trainer with your engaging personality and your way of explaining things. This was a great informative video Deady and the coupling and uncoupling procedure is vastly important and should not be rushed. A workmate of mine left to go to class 1 for his dad, he had been doing the job for 2-3 years and somehow got it wrong he left the handbrake off coupling to a loaded trailer he connected the airline and the whole lot ran away crushing him to death. So you see not every trailer is in an ideal position when you go to pick it up but if the right procedure is followed it will minimise the risks of anything going wrong. These tips videos are very good and that's an older driver talking. All the best.

Great vid buddy, agree with Luke, always use your air suspension as you pull out from under the trailer and drop the tail of the unit, saves covering everything in 5th wheel grease, its horrible stuff. Same with decoupling, once your under the trailer, raise the drive air, makes wi doing the legs up easier when theres no pressure on them. Speaking of legs if you wi d them up the way you were, and your hand slips, your be off to the dentist with a handle shaped hole in your teeth! Use the locking bolt to hold the handle, tethered for a reason. Last criticism,99.999% of tractor units have proper parking points for all the sussies, dont just chuck them over the frame, you run anywhere solo and even just one sussie falls off the catwalk, the propshaft will find it and it will more than likely take them all with it! Well done for getting class one,now the learning starts!! Remember, every days a school day. Stay safe.

Good Morning Mr Deady, I've read some comments regarding lowering the suspension on the unit before pulling from under the trailer. Good advice yes but only lower it when you've cleared the kingpin, otherwise you could do some damage to the fifth wheel. Keep up the good work, cheers.

Another great video mate. Didn’t do that as part of the test in my day. Did it as part of the training though. Trailer parking brake is nice and easy nowadays. In my day it consisted of moving a ratchet handle back and forth about a hundred times until you were exhausted. You’d have thought they’d have improved the landing leg operation by now but I suppose if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it 😀😀

Well done on passing I would just say is when you before you full. On connect to the 5th wheel raise your suspension then connect and do your tug test x3 1 forward and 1 back and 1 forward saves bending the legs when your fully loaded.... And I've always been taught is start from red air line then abs the electric lines and last yellow air and same for when uncoupling start from yellow air and work your way backwards that's how I was taught we all have different ways but brill mate welcome to the world of trucking

I like the video, Deady... It gives me an idea of what the lorries are like. Wow, there are some MAJOR differences haha... Like, here in the States we only have 3 connections behind the cab (red for trailer brakes, blue for service brakes, and an electrical line for the lights on the trailer). And that's interesting how y'all have another "piece" with the fifth wheel to keep it locked in place. That's nice. I wish we had that here. And you set and release the trailer brakes on the outside of the trailer?? (O.o). That's pretty different, but I definitely like that. Your video was awesome. It definitely was quick but showed all the steps. You would be a cool artic instructor :)

You followed the procedure well, couple of things for the future. As Luke says you should always use the air suspension during coupling and uncoupling to prevent damage to the wings and keep the grease where it should be (not all over your clothes) in addition if you raise the suspension once you are under the rubbing plate and take the weight of the trailer, you will never miss the pin! One other thing I noticed when you got out of the cab prior to uncoupling, you left your dirty gloves on the seat. Then when you got back in the cab after uncoupling, you still had your dirty gloves on. touching the wheel and park brake. In the real world the next driver into the cab won't thank you for getting dirty hands and clothes. All the best in your future career.

On the test is one thing, on the assessment is another, and when you're out by yourself it's a totally different thing. Its each to their own. Depending on the trailer I always connect the lines 1st when hooking up and last when I drop it. On some trailers and units, depending where the 5th wheel is positioned, it's hard to connect the red line once you're hooked up. When I 1st started I had people tell me all different ways, even when I should be taking the number plate off. You need to find your own way and that way you wont forget.

We don't have trailer brake control buttons here in Australia. Trailer brakes can only be released from operating the parking brake inside the truck once your airlines are connected. As such, the red airline is only charged with air when the parking brake lever is released, not before. This obviously means that you can't ever forget to apply the trailer parking brakes as that option is taken away from you. There is also a separate non locking trailer brake lever inside all trucks which allows you to individually test the trailer brake operation from that of the tractor unit. Having used both UK and Australian systems, I think the Aussie system is probably the safer method as it also provides the driver with the ability to actually check the separate operation of the trailer brakes. If you feel that the trailer doesn't appear to be braking correctly when you operate the foot brake, a simple pull on the trailer brake lever will confirm if you have an air supply down the blue service airline. The downside is that should you happen to bust your red airline, there is no option to shunt the trailer to the side of the road until the airline is repaired.

Hi, Deady 2012,, You would make a good instructor,, unfortunately, there are a lot of companies who take on instructors who have a very bad temperament for the job..bitter guys who have been in the Job to long.. keep up the good work. I have learned more from your Videos than I have with some of the class 1 instructors
