@@paul191282 ...Paul, the steering system is exactly the same as in a normal cab-over tractor. But, the difference between a yard-tractor and a road-tractor is that a) the shunter's wheelbase is a lot shorter b) you have far more visibility around you when maneuvering (especially if the unit is equipped with a huge convex mirror....and I mean huge). I've had the pleasure of shunting 100 trailers on Friday evenings and all-day Saturdays for give or take 7 years,.....the last 4 with a real McCoy Yard-Shunter with hydraulic 5th Wheel lifter, as opposed to to a day-cab tractor with "Armstrong" trailer landing-gear crank. LOL......and that was not my main job, mind you, as I managed the Fleet Safety department for that 65 power-unit company/ That being said, I commend Hayley for what she's doing to help greenhorns get their feet wet. I will shoot some tips to her in a separate post later on.

I mean this from the bottom of my heart, nobody is better than Hayley when it comes to explaining how to drive, reverse or any technique or type of trick. Hayley is just the best. It's as simple as that. There maybe better tutors than her but nobody is better than her when it comes to explaining. Hayley, if you're reading my comment then i would like to tell you I'm your biggest fan and nobody appreciates you more than me. You are a very nice person and very helpful. I managed to pass in January but haven't been lucky enough to find a job. Your vidoes helped a lot.

Best advice I can offer is ...A little at the front does a lot at the back just give it time to react, It will go. And as always GET OUT AND LOOK, no one wants an accident. Dont feel ashamed if it doesnt go right first time . Im 24 years in and still have days when i think my god where am i going . Ignore the prying eyes of other drivers that you think are judging you they were all there at one point.

From an old tired and REtired driver from the US. You are correct Miss Hayley. The set up is 80% of the back in process. Then just following the trailer in with the tractor is easier! Good job! Todd Konoske the retired trucker.

Hi Hayley! Ive just completed my first day HGV driving (going from a car straight to artic) and the reversing has really blown my mind. Fingers crossed I can take them with me tomorrow and going forward. ❤

Nice Vlog Hayley. I use to use the mid axle to guide me. Great explanation. The worst thing as a new driver is reversing off a busy road. The test learns you the basics. When you get sent somewhere with a sharp reverse on a busy road it is a nightmare. People are impatient and it will stress you out. You will sweat LOL. We all went through that phase. Matter of practice. Small urban rear steer trailers are another story. Also The new LST long semi trailers with rear steer. I loved them. Longer but a dream to drive once you get it. Ended my days shunting. I hate drivers who stand and laugh at some new driver struggling. I have helped many in the yard when I had the time. Your teaching skills shine through. Respect. Deady well what can I say.

What an excellent vlog. Hayley's very good at demonstrating things and explaining them. A couple of months ago one of our trainers told me that the biggest mistake new drivers make with artics is over steering, and here it is, perfectly explained and demonstrated. I shall watch this again a few times before I take my Class 1, early in 2022 hopefully. I would never have guessed Hayley had been a school teacher, the thought wouldn't have crossed my mind. 😂😉 I would think her lessons must have been quite interesting, even for non scientific brains like mine. But teaching's loss is our gain. Keep it up Hayley. 👍

That was excellent. My dad taught me, his favourite expression is “Stop waving the unit around like a flag” and “ Don’t turn the steering wheel”. Basically as you have said get the trailer going in the right direction at the start, and take the lock off as you go backwards. One other tip if you have oversteered, pull forward a little bit, dont pull the trailer all the way out, and have another bite at it.

Really good video, very well explained, its just a shame you didn't get it out 4 weeks ago so I could use it when I first passed, lol. I'm still new to driving class 1 but I found a better way to approach steering that may be useful for some people. Drive the truck, not the trailer. I stopped trying to turn the trailer, and started thinking about where the unit needs to be to influence the trailer, remember you're steering a truck that's pushing a trailer, your not steering the trailer. As soon as I started thinking like this I stopped having to think about which way to turn the wheel, because it was the same as driving a class 2 or car. This also helped me learn when to take off the steering, because I was focused on the unit just as much as the trailer. Luckily I figured this out on day 2 of my training, so have never needed to learn the rules you mentioned, although my instructor tried to teach them to me, but since then I have never had to think about which way to turn the wheel, it was just natural. which made the whole process a lot easier.

Thanks for sharing your explanation of your reversing your trailer. I'm not a trucker but I tow a 23 foot caravan and a similar set of rules. You do talk in a common sense way and I do love your videos. Following from Sydney Australia.
@xj358
2 жыл бұрын
Mate, I have said it for a long time. Anyone who is confident with reversing a caravan, including left and right reverse turns, will find reversing an artic (or semi in Australia) a piece of cake. Its exactly the same method and understanding which is required. No need to spend months driving a rigid truck which will give you zero understanding of reversing an artic. Get yourself a caravan and practice. For example, if you were to drive a Mercedes Sprinter van or similar (which can be driven on a car licence) and stuck a similar length trailer on the back, you wouldn't be a million miles away from the minimum length required to take an artic test, yet you are gaining the exact same experience and understanding of reversing whilst only holding a car licence. 31 years Class 1 in the UK and 13 years MC (road train) in Australia.

Well I think you covered that subject pretty darn well. Plenty of examples in the classroom and out. I bet it's a really tricky subject to try and explain hence so many different methods handed down from driver to driver. I think this should help a lot of new drivers. It will offer them more information, another drivers perspective, and I think the fact we all learn slightly differently will help with that pool of advice that people can use as reference material. Your live demo really explains where I was going wrong on my driver evaluation and how I massively oversteered. I also wasn't aware of the delay from turning the wheel to the trailer moving, this now explains so much as to where I messed up. I was making the mistake of transferring the steering wheel movement from my car to an artic with disastrous results....... and the cat just vanished at 07:24 !!! magic cat

My tip: Ignore the armchair experts. I have come from rigids once and then came back into the industry after 18 years teaching. Both times my rusty reversing skills were mocked by warehouse staff that don't even have any kind of licence other than car. The other drivers were fine and just said nothing or offered a bit of constructive advice. It will take time, a sunny day is one thing, but doing blindsides without space at night in heavy rain will test you even more. Another tip: To reverse in a straight line turn the wheel towards the mirror that the trailer is in.

I passed my class test three weeks ago. Last week was my first class one job with the agency and I was spoiled with a new Scania V8, which was an absolute joy to drive. Flatbed with heavy site metal supports. Also rear steering axle on the trailer, all brand new to me. I ended up in a housing estate twice looking for the site and I can assure you all, take your time and you WILL reverse it and have the trailer going exactly where you want it. Also sharp bends, just go for it and you'll be amazed what you can get it around, definitely easier than a rigid. After debating if i wanted to drive class 2 (which i do enjoy) or class 1 I definitely want to do class 1. Seeing that trailer follow you around is so cool. I also drove a pick up with a triple axle trailer and what a pain in the arse that was, way more difficult to reverse!! Although after a day of it be prepared to drive your car home still thinking you have a trailer hanging off the back 😂😂

drnh444, what agency did you join?, I have got zero Class 1 experience since passing in Jan 23, as everywhere I look they are asking for experience in Class 1, and even most cases Class 2, those who say "new passers welcome to apply", I never get beyond the CV stage, which to me proves they don't take or want new passers, otherwise I'd at least get an Interview and then not be offered the job, I could accept that, far more, but getting into the industry seems absolutely impossible for me, and I am seeking any help i can get

Superb editing job, as well as explaining and the backing up itself !!. I never heard that tip to use (as a reminder) 1 hand for the trailer to bend and the other to get it straight again. So much clearer than the old "counter steering", I always loose my way doing it and have to think what the counter direction is. Thank you for this tip. Love from Canada.

LOL......and that was not my main job, mind you, as I managed the Fleet Safety department for that 65 power-unit company/ That being said, I commend Hayley for what she's doing to help greenhorns get their feet wet. I will shoot some tips to her in a separate post later on.

I failed on reversing so this is gold for me. You sound jealousy of her.
You’ve got the making of a good driving instructor.

Yes. I failed 3times now my 3 assessment. Bit worried 😟. But this clip will help me next time. 🤞Thanks Hayley
As someone who teaches people to do this I will point them in the direction of your video. Your previous career as a teacher shows through, relaxed easy to absorb and based on your experiences. Maybe in the future when you are looking for a move in the industry, a job as a commercial vehicle instructor would be of interest to you. 👍
The driving test doesn't cover reversing as much as it should, you only learn once you're on your own. Some great tips in this video. It seems impossible at first but it becomes soooooo much easier 😁

@@wodm It's a stupid part of the test in my opinion (knowing what I know now!) You should have to reverse in to a bay or something.
All the issues/mistakes you raised are what I experienced today and I came away quite frustrated. Thank you for being so great at carefully explaining these manoeuvres. Fingers crossed I can take them with me tomorrow and going forward. ❤
What an absolutely first class video!!!!! I have had my HGV 1 for a very long time and still need to take shunts now and again BUT your video is fantastic for experienced drivers as well as new entrants....Very very well done and thank you for sharing👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent, just what I needed. Thank you
Hayley I just wanted to say a huge thank you for this video. I had 2 days practicing my reversing and couldn't get my head around it. I watched your video last night, had my reversing test today on the third day of practicing and passed first time thanks to your tips and explaining. Thank you again. Hopefully pass the practical test next week. :)
Keep watching these videos, got my first lesson this Thursday, passed my hazard, theory and cpc a few weeks ago and just been waiting for a weeks holiday to do my lessons and test. These videos are really helpful.

What a lovely video sharing your experiences on reversing an artic lorry 🚛 Your previous job as a teacher has shon through on this video as your soft voice helps to listen to you 🤩 Great tips for newbies 👍🏻 Shame Deady didn’t do helping videos instead of ranting and raving 🤔 But that’s his channel for the boys lol 😆 Keep the excellent videos coming Hayley. Great vid , not just for newbies .. we all need reminders from time to time . Dready is a pongo fool
Very kind of you to do this for new guys!.. Stay safe!
Hayley, Spot on! Sound advice, very helpful. Have a great weekend.
Excellent Hayley, clear and concise I am sure that a lot of people will benefit from watching this video💚 *Unlike how I learned in an old yard driving a clapped out Seddon (no power steering} a short trailer and no guidance other than laughter from the mechanics.😫
Having done a 2 week course to pass my class one and 2 start of this year I can honestly say I've learned more watching your videos than I did on the actual driving course. I think you would make a great instruction at a driving school .
Hayley..!! You must have heard my cries 🤩👍🏻....Brilliant video and has helped me get a better understanding
Again, a brilliant video from you Hayley. The best on YT !
hayley very nice i am almost familiar with the truck without driving just watching your videos.
Hayley for instructor. If all Instructors explaine like you we never will have be so scare to reverse.Thank you so mutch
Yet another brilliant video Hayley. Keep them coming! Stay safe.
"Artics are weird" - best comment ever :) Seriously though, great video Hayley, keep up the great work !
Watched a few of your videos recently to help with my class c&e test, which I passed today 👍🏼very helpful thank you for the time you take to help others out 😁
I passed my CE around the same time as you Hayley and I can totally relate as I was making hard work of the simplest reversing from over cooking it lol. I'm getting better now simply because I'm taking my time which allows me to correct myself easier. Brilliant tips btw and I'm sure you'll be a great instructor with your patience. Happy belated birthday too 🎂👌
Been looking forward to this tutorial from the day you passed class 1 👌🏽 Brilliant at as always. Thank you so much for all the tips 🚛❤
Brilliant video. You make it so clear and it's perfect for new drivers. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your explanation of your reversing your trailer. I'm not a trucker but I tow a 23 foot caravan and a similar set of rules. You do talk in a common sense way and I do love your videos. Following from Sydney Australia.
@xj358
That is a very well put together video Hayley, I am sure many drivers will take a lot of benefit from your very informative description of how to reverse a trailer, well done 👍 👏
Got my test in 3 hours time. Perfect timing and a great video to wake up to! Thanks again Hayley.

thank you for this video. you have made it so clear and easy to understand. Really appreciate the time you've put on it. thank you
Great video. Thanks for making the time and sharing.
Thank you once again for great video. As an agency driver i dont get enough class 1 work to be proficient so yr videos are extremely helpful. Ive watched this one 3 times & made notes in prep for a class 1 job today. I did jackknife while manouvering but managed to sort it thanks to hearing yr calm voice in my head. Thank you so much for all the work you've done and best wishes for yr career as an hgv instructor.
The way you express your driving knowledge is amazing. Thank you!
Thankyou for this Hayley it's brilliant, you've put such a lot of work into producing this. Fantastic
I passed my CE (i.e. Truck+trailer in Holland) drivers exame with more luck than knowledge and will start working as a truck driver within a few days. I am very nervouse where my reversing will bring me. However your video has boosted somehow my convidence or at least made me think that… ok, it will be difficult but i will get it done. THANKS!
Thank you Hayley for all your hints and tips - they are certainly helping me with the start of my HGV driving
I was making the mistake of transferring the steering wheel movement from my car to an artic with disastrous results....... and the cat just vanished at 07:24 !!! magic cat
You're the best Hayley. Thanks for all your hard work in putting the videos together.
Great example and a top bit of teaching keep up the top tips.
Really helpful video and great instruction. The use of the model lorry is genius. Thank you.
You are by far the best best Artic teacher I had!
Hi Hayley I've watched loads of your videos and they have helped so much. Thanks for your service x
Excellent…Application,explanation and demonstration…
Excellent and so helpful. Clearly explained with well-chosen examples. Thanks, Hayley.
Thank you so much, since I started following ur tips I have improved a lot in my reversing.

This video is great for new drivers. I sat there nodding my head in agreement with everything you said. I remember making all the same mistakes when I started my HGV career and I wish this video had been about back then. Reversing is the most under taught subject in HGV training. Well done and keep it going.
Very helpful as a new driver, much appreciated Hayley.

Brilliant video! Best I have seen! As a new driver I was struggling with this and your tips have really helped me! Thank you
This is one of best...if not the best reversing videos! Many thanks! ❤ I'm going to start my course in a week and this definitely help me!
Thank you soooooo much I’m really finding all your videos very helpful. Keep up the great work.
this video deserves to go viral, super helpful. Thank you so much
Great vid Hayley. Nice to see you doing so well with the reversing now and bet you’re feeling more confident these days. Some good points nicely explained; keep up the good work 😀
My tip: Ignore the armchair experts.

Great one Hayley, Keep up the great work and I think you will have no issues achieving your objects within the industry. Good luck for the future and I will be following you in this journey for sure.

Wow, this is just what needed to see. I passed my class 1 9 months ago and having never driven one since then, i have an assessment in the morning for a job. This has helped so much! Thank you
Hayley, this is a great video; you have certainly mastered reversing in the antics. Good enough to be able to teach it! You are a great teacher. Thanks😄😍😽❤🐈🌺🌼🌷🍀🏵🍿🍸
