Thanks as always. The issue with VLC, in converting MKV to MP4, is you’re likely to re-encode the video, when often you can simply copy it over. As you know, MKV is a container, not a video format, and MKVs often contain video and audio tracks compatible with MP4 playback. An easier free tool is XMedia Recode. Load MKV, choose output and XMedia will show you if you need to convert or can just copy the video and audio tracks. Copy is obviously lossless, and takes roughly 1 minute for a 1 GB file. XMedia will also encode if required.

I want to make a small comment here about a common misunderstanding. MKV and MP4 are not video codecs like x264 vs the far more efficient x265 (HEVC). They are containers and could feasibly hold any number of different media streams within them. I have often heard people claiming that one is better than the other which is idiotic as neither has any impact on video quality. In point of fact MKV is generally a more flexible container and is able to hold a greater range of media streams and associated Metadata. As an analogy, it is like two people arguing about whose lunch is better based on the type of lunch box they own.

Though the mkv file format is open to all; you might encounter systems that do not play or support the mkv extension or container format. In this situations, it is necessary to convert mkv to another system-compatible file format, such as the mp4 file format. It is actually effortless to convert mkv to mp4 using a video converting software like DumboFab Video Converter.

What is vlc anyway? We use MPC HC with K-lite codec pack for playback and Handbrake to transcode videos. These are the professional ways to do stuff.

Hey man can I please have some help? I’m having an issue with my hard drive. So long story short I sold my old Vega 56 to someone through facebook. He claimed it didn’t work and he opened up a case against me. PayPal told him to send me the card back. I have a 5600x/3060ti combo in my system. My pc has been running great with no issues. Yesterday I get the vega 56 back from the guy and put it in my system and the card works. I put it under load, play games etc. everything is all good. So I take it out of my system and put my 3060ti back in and it just goes to the bios. I can’t boot to windows now and my hard drive isn’t even showing up anymore in the system. I unplugged everything and plugged it back in, cleared the cmos, used different sata ports and nothing is happening. I’m worried that I lost everything on my hard drive because I haven’t backed it up recently. I took the hard drive out of my system and the fan inside of it is spinning but no matter what I do it isn’t being read in my system. It’s doing exactly what yours did in the video with the asrock motherboard where it just boots to the bios and won’t let me into windows. For me though the hard drive was my only drive so I lost everything. Is there any way to fix this?

Never worked for me!, Tried several times with several Movies but once the process was completed the movies would still be in MKV format??

Great Video, but please tell me how your 2 hour long video basically instantly converted... im also trying to do this with a 2 hour long video and its taking so long. Any solutions?

Why need to convert? Both formats are containers, right? Conversion of video formats means to re-encode the video with a different codec.

Also going from MKV to MP4 creates a larger file than the MKV. His example showed MKV at 949mb and the MP4 was 499mb. 50mb larger.

Because Première can't handle mkv files.

hi there have u try handbrake? for free say u can get all black bars out of yr video th only thing it will not do is cut th video hagd1 all

I rather have mkv than mp4.... you'll lose chapters, multiple audio channels, embedded subtitles, ect. with mp4

You can have all those options in mp4 its just using the right tools & VLC needs a Muxer installed to convert properly to mkv files or it wont behave.

Tried it and the VLC output was utter garbage.

Video for KZread HD will downgrade a 1080 video to 720. HOWEVER, I noticed at 4:53 there's a setting that says MPEG 4 1080p TV/device. THAT WORKED! Just a little tip.....

I think "Handbrake" can also do that too!!!😁👍🏻

You might need to use Handbrake for that to install subtitles or force them on screen.

I watched your video and followed along on my computer but the file that VLC created for me was only 1 kb in size and non-usable. The file I'm trying to convert to MP4 is a .SNX file which is the type of file created by Uniden security cameras. So far, I can only view them on the Uniden monitor that came with the system. Do you know how to convert a .SNX file to ,MP4?

If it is a single camera video you can try changing the .SNX suffix to .ASF .... Or you can load the video up in the Uniden player and pause it and go to your %AppData%\Sec24 Media Player folder and inside there is a temp folder (forgot the name but will have the word temp in it) and copy those files to your desktop (There should be one for each camera/channel) and rename the .SNX to .ASF .... Then you should be able to load the .ASF files in VLC and convert them to MP4

Let me guess you found the .SNX files in --> C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Uniden Media Player You need to ignore the 1kb files & use the bigger .SNX that are in that folder, right click in the folder & choose View, then change it from what it is, to Details to see the file sizes. copy the larger .SNX files to a new folder. Rename them to .ASF & you should find that VLC Media player will play them if done correctly. Lot of programs like Handbreak/Vidcoder will convert the asf to mp4

@@Ratchet_effect The files are on a micro SD card in a folder named "Video". Inside that are individual folders that are dated. Inside those are the individual .SNX files only

Format factory does it all.

A program such as FormatFactory will convert almost anything to anything, within reason.

I use Filmora.

m4v files are just mp4 files with a different extension.

Just change the extension to mp4.

I use Handbrake to reduce the files then have to use something like VLC to convert it. I want one tool that does it all. LOL

It's not really a conversion, it's a reboxing.
