How to Convert Guillow's Cessna 170 to R/C - Full Build Video
Ғылым және технология
This is full time lapse of building a 24 in Guillow’s Cessna 170 Balsa Kit. I used a 6 ch receiver, brushless 180 size motor 2 cell battery. I added 3mm LED lights for strobe, nav, and beacon. I used a wheel kit from the UMX Timber from Horizon Hobby. I covered it with White Ultra Coat. The Decals where included in the kit. I needed to purchase very minimal balsa wood for modifications. I will be using my Spektrum DX6 controller to fly.

Wow!! Best build of the year award! This 62 year old pilot and modeler, Cessna and Guillows builder wants to wish you the best for your aviation interests!
Proof positive that a cat is an essential part of any build. Inspiration for a great conversion!
The cats watching you build this kit was pretty funny. I started watching your videos for the 3d printing but found your r/c content too. Keep up the great work!
Very detailed work and it turned out fantastic…thank you for posting this as I’m just starting out in this balsa/tissue aircraft building. By the way, you have an amazing FFA technician working with you.
Your assistant is awesome, almost as much as the build. Appreciate what you do.
I love this model. It was the first I ever built as a kid; what a mess that was with no mentor. I built it a couple of times since with better results. As I was watching the nice video, my black cat was on the desk demanding attention, so I got a real kick out of seeing your black kitty helping you build. Nice job on the model, b.t.w.
Just finished a piper cub 303 guillows kit conversion. I did flaperons tho. I always learn something new from your videos thanks
Sick build dude. Real nice handywork. Love the lights. Beauty plane.
Beautiful job and conversion! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting this video. The 170 Cessna does indeed works as a great candidate. Mine has a Cox Pee Wee .020 w/ the elctronics from a Hobbyzone sport cub s2 - and the weight is all engine! :)
Great build video, well done lad. Cheers from the land down under
very nice! I did the same strengthening of the connection between the 2 half-wings. but really, the weakest point of the entire structure is the connection of the wings to the top of cabin. Mine broke quickly, had to beef it up with lots of extra wood.
Almost forgot! Loved the kitty!
Hello, Troy. A very detailed and well done build. You can get Wireless NAV, Beacon, and Strobe Lights now. It's very cheap as well as a package. It would reduce weight, since it doesn't require the heavy wires leading out to the wing tips. I thought I'd tell you that. This is the definition of outstanding, my favorite type of model is a flying model that also doubles as a display model (lights, flaps, doors etc). I'm going to record my first build, it's the kit 1005 guillows Hellcat.
Million dollar cub. WOW SHURE DETAILED THAT PUPPIE. LOL
Amazing work there
Very impressive!
Great vid. Very helpful
Excelent job, congrats.
Big work. Congratulations. Very nice.

Wow amazing
Freaking amazing talent man! Very well done! I just bought this kit today and I'm just gonna keep it basic! Excellent video!

Thank you for the comment. Ya this was my first small balsa plane and I added a bit too much weight. It would work better to not add lights flaps and use lighter covering material. Good luck with your build.

2 hrs later how was your build ? I’m interested in buying this but I’m unsure

@Adrian Jesus it's actually still in the box! I've built many military places in the past but have yet to start this one. They are fun to build though.
The great supervisor!
I'm Sure Glad Kitty (s) Took An Interest : ) !
Your cat is so awesome :)
Omg, dude in what one
Thanks for the awesome video, it was extremely useful! One question: what did you say you used as a hinge for the rudder and elevators? Not hinge tape but something else? Wouldn't hinge tape just work for everything? Thanks!
very cool. would you share the names of the motorbattery servo and electronic? I want to do this to a guillows hellcat f6F.
The ultimate umx timber😍😍, very nice job, very interesting video
What size hinges do you use. I am trying to convert the Guillow edge 540 into rc. Love your videos
Did you add a link for the LEDs that you used?
You have a tiny helper!
Hello, what prop is that? Thank you 👍
nice cats
unbelievable!!! I wish we were neighbors! Can you link where you bought the box of wire? For that matter, will you also provide a link for the LED lights? so sick!
Excellent work. That looked like a lot of wires for the lights etc. Did you use one negative wire for everything? All the lights and even the servos can be on one negative wire. That can save some weight too.

yes, way too heavy gauge wire,,
what servos, motor, prop and wheel sizes did you use ?
Does it takeoff from ground with this kit ?
Where did you get those wheels and tires? Need a pair for my Super Cub.
The kittens! 🤣
Bela construção! Por que não voou?
I think you should build one with the original rubber power and tissue to see how much fun they were!

Yes I agree I have purchased two more small guillows kits to try this project again and focus more on saving wight. Right now I have been building a lot of 3D printed airplanes. Cheers
What are the construction requirements for the model itself? I cannot find them anywhere.
Where di you get the big tires?
What size magnets do you use?
cool beans
literally what tool did you use to cut the spars, i wanna do that on my p40 model to make flaps and ailerons but i have 0 clue what you did, it looks like a ruler-… literally amazing i didn’t even think this was possible

Its just a hobby saw. Its got a red handle. You can find them at any ace hardware or home depot. Even hobby shops. Hell you might even find it on amazon
Rubber band power isn't bad....some planes can fly take off land once released.
Awesome build! Could you tell me how the tissue is called - the paper you wrap entire model in. I have the same kit but no tissue in the box...
@citabria4804

He used monokote but that’s too heavy for something this small for rc flight use tissue paper
@krotchlickmeugh627
2 жыл бұрын
@@citabria4804 definitely not too heavy
if the model were 50% larger you could get away with adding all that extra weight. Wing loading is just too high to carry lights, wires, flap servo and the heavier covering material. You really did a nice building job though --- beautiful model!. Try again keeping it much lighter and you will be rewarded.
Where is vid of maiden?
Hey, so I bought the same thing, just it was a Beechcraft model instead of a Cessna. Do you think I can also convert it?
@TroyMcMillan
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can definitely convert it also just be carful with adding to much wight. If I were to do it again I would not add the lights, flaps and use different material to cover it to save wight. Just add rudder elevator and use tissue paper to cover it and it will fly really good. My build was a bit too heavy. Cheers
Really liked the video, however, you need to stop during steps to give a slower or still of some of the things you have done. Example the placement of the servo
Almost seems like it would be easier to find an rc plan that's close to the right size, reduce the plan to the desired size, and go from there?

@@TroyMcMillan I've got plans for a Jr Sinbad I was thinking of converting to RC, but it would only be two channel. Original is 30", my print came to 36" span as the guy was having to guess how to set his printer. Since my current sailplane is 79" span, I didn't figure the extra 6" would hurt, and didn't have him reprint. 😁

how many inches are the wheels

But no flight video....?
And allways the cat 🐈⬛ 😂😂😂😂
damn dude, what's next? an h bomb in your garage? very impressive
I think the wheels are to small
you built it soooo fast i could not see what you were doing
The cat is bigger than the plane¡¡¡
I just wish it was bigger so you could takeoff on grass
Very work 😑 , I used foan same .

Nice job. But it was realy hard listening to you besides understanding what you sad. You sound so moodless.
It is a FREE Flight rubber powered model you dumb "A" did you ever go to and Airport and look at a REAL C-170.
realy like this videos convertion results, however the near comatose valley girl speach pattern trail off was so freaking annoying i had to turn off the sound
