Guillow’s Giant Scale Balsa JU 87-B Stuka • RC Conversion Build.
Фильм және анимация
A highly customized build of Guillow's giant scale Stuka balsa model kit converted to radio control. I bought this kit from my local hobby shop. This was a fun but challenging project, mainly because of the wing design, and the flap and aileron configurations. I thought it would be cool to have a functional bomb drop as well. Due to the lack of sheet balsa wood available right now, I bought a block and sawed it into sheets on my table saw. The wing is removable, held in place with two wood dowels and two screws. The covering is MonoKote with a bit of spray paint, clear matt finish was sprayed over the decals and paint. Had trouble getting the decals to stick, but what I found worked well was a 50/50 mix of Elmer's Clear School Glue and water applied with a paint brush between the decal and the surface of the model. The paint scheme is somewhat generic, just thought the yellow nose, tail, and underside of the wing tips would look cool and be easier to see once it’s up in the sky. Left off a few scale details as this is meant to be a flying model and they would likely be the first things to break off on “landing”.

Thanks it brought back great memories when I built Guillows. Mine was the Grumman Hellcat. But now these days you won't find the younger generation doing this cause they always have their head up their cell phone's ass all the time. I hope Hanz and Franz had a great maiden flight...

That's cool, I think it would make a great control line model. I had a Cox Stuka when I was a kid, I still have the .049 engine, might put it in something one day.
Excellent build. The Stuka was definitely an interesting aircraft.

I absolutely LOVE Guillow’s Balsa kits! I built several strictly for display back in the late 70’s early 80’s, and still have two in my stash of balsa things. But now-a-days the prices are obscenely high, out of my budget. I missed out on a chance to aquire the large-scale New Jersey (?) battle-ship, and somehow lost my large-scale PT-109 all-wood model. I love wood, and stick & tissue building. (I have an Sig Magnum and a Twister, and several smaller all-wood models I will be starting this winter. All C/L. The StuntHangar youtube channel is a big help) And I loved this build video, even though I do no R/C flying… I don’t have the co-ordination for it… too many thumbs 😎🤣

I agree the prices are getting almost too high, and for a beginner it might be a deterrent to getting into building these types of kits. There are a lot of benefits form modelling that go well beyond the hobby. Thanks for you comment!

Looks absolutely fantastic! Another big fan of Guillows here. I have the kit #2001, P-38 Lightning, it's been waiting for it's turn since the nineties... Kinda glad I didn't build it back then, the twin Cox 049 engines I had originally planned would've made a mess of it. This video was very inspirational!

I was thinking about using an old 049 on this build. It was from a Cox control line Stuka I had, but I chickened out! That engine hasn't run in decades. I hope you get to the P-38 soon, that looks like a really cool kit!

This kit was really challenging for me (at least the way I built it with working flaps and bomb drop). The smaller sizes of these kits can make it tough to cram in all the electronics. I have a scratch build L-19 flight video on my channel if your interested. I do like building from scratch but there is a balsa shortage right now where I live. Anyway good luck with the RC conversion project and thanks for the watching!
I built one of these when I was 12, with the intent of being a control line powered flight plane , took 3 months . Fist time up .went around a couple of times . went high getting ready for a dive, nosed it down , went into the dive , and wham strait into the playground.

I picked this kit up at my local hobby shop for under $100. It is unfortunate the prices now, it kind of puts these type of kits out of reach of a lot of kids. It was great when you could put these together, learn some skills and not worry about how it turned out because of the price. Thanks for watching!

I’m not sure how you did the different colors for the wing camouflage. I see you cut one color of the tissue to the pattern you wanted and attached it to the wing. The second color , was it cut to an exact matching shape? Or do the edges overlap? Did you cut the two color sheets together, then attach them separately to the model?

I used monokote heat shrink covering on this model. It's available at most good hobby stores or online. The framing has to be strong enough to withstand the shrinking so it has to be reinforced on a model of this small size.The monokote covers the whole model then I masked off the camo pattern and used spray paint for the second colour. I used a clear matt spray to even out the finish. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

The best place is your local hobby shop, those guys are usually a great help, or most of the electronics are available on amazon if you don't have shop close by. A trainer plane is a good place to start to get used to flying and there are kits that have almost everything you need to fly right out of the box. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Hey! Excellent build as usual - I did have one question though- how did you do the panel lines is there a hack or did you just draw them on with a sharpie?
@punkworkschannel
Жыл бұрын
Yes, I used a fine tip sharpie. I used a clear matt spray finish on this model but I drew that panel lines after the spray. I did a test with the spray over the sharpie and it caused the lines to run. Tip: I used a short piece of plastic packing strap (the kind that comes with heavy items shipped in cardboard boxes) as a flexible ruler to draw straight lines around curves surfaces like the fuselage and the upper part of the wing.

Really enjoyed this video. Can't wait to see it fly! Did you sheet it with 1/32 or 1/16? Any washout?
@punkworkschannel

My plan was to sheet it in 1/32" but I can not find any balsa sheeting anywhere. I sanded down the fuse bulkheads about 1/32" and cut new notches for the stringers to keep the fuse diameter about the same with the sheeting. I found a block of balsa for about $15 and cut sheets from that on my table saw. The thicknesses turned out not uniform so just sanded them down once i glued them in place. No washout, we'll see how she flies. Thanks for the comment!
