Curtiss P-6E Hawk • Dumas rubber power build

Ғылым және технология

The Curtiss P-6E Hawk was in service in the USAAC from the late1920s to about 1937. The paint scheme I chose for this model is based on the P-6E in the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
I bought this 17.5 inch wingspan Dumas kit from a local hobby store. I made a few minor modifications including adding control surfaces and making them adjustable with the use of light bendable wire hinges (the wire is glued in place and made from garbage bag twist ties, works really well). I rendered the graphics on the computer and scanned and printed them on tissue. Another fun model to build although the custom graphics turned out to be a bit more challenging than I anticipated.
Yes, I spelled plastic wrong at 1:03, no I wasn't drunk, just missed it.

    Wonderful little model! Do you ever fly any of your Dumas creations? And how do you print the tissue / create the artwork? I have been baffeled by that . How can a fellow modeler learn how to do that? Thanks for sharing! Steve

    Scan the portion of the plan where the graphics are needed. Import the file into an app like Illustrator and use it as a template to build the new graphics. Set up the final graphics file at 100% size needed. Tape the tissue smoothly to an 8.5 X 11 regular sheet of paper and put it in the printer tray. Use name brand ink if you can because the cheap stuff will smear easily. Print it out and that’s it. You might have to experiment a bit to figure out what works best. You can print on colour tissue but use white tissue if you need white in the graphics. I use the steam from a kettle to shrink the tissue as it has less change to smear the ink if it gets too wet. Hope that helps!

    Thank you! I have never tried working with a file or an app. But I think you gave me enough clues to give it a try just need to get a new printer head in my Epson 11 x 117 printer. Thanks for sharing your build - inspiring as always!

    Does Dumas still use "Iron wood" in their kits?

    I found the quality of this kit really good including the balsa, I didn't find any ironwood.

    Very impressive! How many total build hours? And did you treat the tissue paper with clear coat or leave alone?

    A couple of weeks, couple hours a day when I have time, not sure of actual hours and making the video adds some time as well. I used the cheap ink in my printer for the graphics, however it smears easily, so gently rotated the model over steam from a kettle to get the tissue to shrink. Nothing extra on the tissue.Thanks for watching!

    @@punkworkschannel”... rebuild it...”? Was it not flyable as built? I, too, wondered how it flies with the extra complication and weight of moveable control surfaces. Trimming would be maddening IMO. Not really common on rubber FF models. Lovely build quality though!

    What wire did you use for the hinges

  • @punkworkschannel

    @punkworkschannel

    8 ай бұрын

    I use the "twist ties" that come with garbage bags and strip the paper off. This wire is light and will stay in the position that it is bent, making trimming fro free flight easy to do. Thanks for you interest!
