How to control the brain: Michael Okun and Kelly Foote at TEDxUF

Ғылым және технология

The human brain is a supercomputer with networks that control the various functions that make us who we are, and allow us to do what we do. When brain circuits malfunction, debilitating motor and behavioral symptoms may emerge. Direct electrical modulation of malfunctioning brain circuits has tremendous potential to alleviate human suffering in dramatic and sometimes surprising ways.

I have an uncle who is 42 and lives with me. He has what I beleive is dystonia. Our family, has taken care of him siince I can remember. He crawls everywhere when at home and wheelchair bound. But he is not incompetent. He goes to the bathroom by himself unless we have to rush in there and help. (Not worth the mess) but anyways I would be a dream to see him walk. Hes religious too, so it be really cool to see science prevail where God has failed. Ive seen soo many pastors pray for him saying GET UP AND WALK.. to nothing. Hes an amazing person and strong-willed. I know chances are slim for this technology is barely getting off the ground. But, it feels good to know that pretty soon others with that desease will have hope.. The thought of seeing tito walk brought tears to my eyes. . Because suddenly there is a possibility. Great work guys.

There is a large support group on Facebook for those who have received DBS for OCD. This procedure has saved so many lives. People who were so stricken with debilitating OCD that they could not leave their house, hold a job, open a door, on and on, are now able to live a more normal life. And often an unexpected side benefit was that their major depression was lessened or cured. This team in the video is sometimes mentioned with gratitude and love. These men are miracle workers that can never be repaid by their patient's families.

Brilliant! I am personally training a Parkinson's patient of yours, Simon Spatts Patterson who you did DBS on. He is a remarkable, inspirational, motivated and dedicated man. He shared this Ted Talk with me and I just wanted to say thanks!! DBS is miraculous science. Great job! You have given so many patients including Simon, a chance at a "normal" life. I hope to be a part of making his life great too! Tx!

I love this talk. The problem with so many talks that TED has had lately is that the speakers were invited because they are good and "inspiring" speakers... not because they actually did anything, or have anything to say. These guys are having trouble connecting with the audience, telling jokes that fall flat, and coming across as generally awkward. And sure enough... they did something awesome. More of these, please.

definitely mind-blowing implications ... this obviously worked so well with that boy, wonder if people with paralysis of any kind e.g. after a stroke or braindamage by some accident could be treated effectively as well where too much damage has occurred to work with conventional and altermative therapy. still I do think it's extremely scary even creepy yet extremely fascinating at the same time that this is what we are at at this point in human history. what's going to be next???

Therapy (stereotypical & others like music), meditation, & medication (Maybe, though it will most likely treat only symptoms & not the cause). Because of neural plasticity your brain can rewire itself just like what they showed in the video. Except instead of using DBS, effort is what changes your brain in this case (the more you struggle to change the more it will change. But be careful as it is not necessarily positive).

The brain is not a supercomputer. This metaphor is not only incorrect but it is misleading as Dr Norman Doidge, author of the book "The Brain that changes itself" goes to great lengths to point out. The work that the guys here are doing is fantastic and the none but the most heartless would deny that many are being helped by this work. But the premise is actually wrong. The last 30 years have show that the brain is not a fixed entity (as would be a supercomputer) but is actually completely plastic hence the term neuroplasticity. I cannot go into details here but if you read Doidges work you can see that countless cases prove that our brains are actually being changed all the time through our own attitudes, choices and responses to our experience and our environment. But above all our brains are changed through what we do BOTH internally (imagining thinking etc) and our motor behavior. Through engaging in certain programs (with no medical intervention involved) patients with OCDC are shown (demonstrated through MRI scans) to have rewired their brains and overcome their disability. Surely everyone would agree that it would be far better to take this route than to plant electrodes in the brain which should only be done as a last resort right? In any case please check out Doidge's book. Its cutting edge and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

  • @humanyoda

I think you have a deficient understanding of what computers are. They need not be fixed entities. Hence, the metaphor is correct.

  • @waterkingdavid

If you are referring to AI well people like Jeff Hawkins of Numenta are full time involved in work related to building machines that learn and using knowledge about how the brain works to inform that. But this is in its infancy and the materials that computers are made of are completely different from the tissue that makes up our brains. I strongly recommend reading about Doidge indicating the brain's neuroplasticity. As one reads one feels shocked that this info isn't more widely known. Hopefully truth rather than market concerns will slowly start directing the aquisition of human knowledge. Take care.

  • @humanyoda

    @humanyoda

David Watermeyer Thanks. I've heard Doidge speak and am aware of neuroplasticity, but still claim what I wrote above. Sure, there are differences between modern computers and human brains, and that's why we use the word "metaphor", not the word "synonym".

I want to feel happy how can I get my neurhands on that, I spend so much energy all day trying to talk myself into being happy forcing myself to smile doing anything I can and usually at best it just keeps me from getting extremely depressed but I’m not sure if I remember what happy feels like anymore, and it’s not like I’m not grateful because I really do have so much to be grateful for. What really brakes my heart is I have two beautiful little girls 2 & 5 years and I don’t know how to teach them to be happy I mean they are so smart it’s not like they can’t pick up on there Dad forcing a smile all the time I could and should be genuinely happy just being around them watching them interact with life play ect. And I love being around them playing with them I absolutely adore them so why do I have to force the smile why doesn’t it just happen, not saying I’m broken but it feels like there is something broken.

You are NOT ALONE.......you literally have to talk to your subconscious ........every night b4 sleep ask yourself a question like this...... I wonder what amazing thing will happen for me tomorrow, or something similar...... your subconscious is made to work to find the answer....... it will stop focusing on so much of the negative and search for something pleasing and positive. Also keeping a book or a journal and gratitude.....sounds to simple but it works! Also first thing when you wake up in the morning before you got out of bed, think of five people in your life that you are so grateful for and maybe a happy memory you had with them.......❤️❤️🙏🌿.....THESE TIMES ARE ROUGH!

its 21 first century human beings have a lot of power on their hands, if the presentation will help kids like Chris to have a normal life or at least some help. the technology would be advantageous to the world.but we all know there is always side effect and they did mention them on they presentation which are very important in evaluating any experiment.

Is it possible, since the eyes let in light stimulus and converts it to electric... is it possible to manipulate mass populace to be depressed or feel a liking to a product.. Similarly with audio stimulation... if they could figure out the required frequency of the input stimulus.. is it not possible to do these experiments without going into the brain itself? this is scary and good @ the same time

***** I totally disagree with you. It disgusts me when people use examples like you just did to demonize "religion" because Islam is the only one who acts like that. The difference between Islam and Christianity is that the Koran directly supports the murder of unbelievers. Jesus gives you the right to reject Him and go on your way. You on the other hand have a egocentric false sense of intellectual superiority in which you think you are so enlightened like you figured out something special by claiming atheism. Im happy to let you know, though you will totally dismiss what I will say, there are followers of Jesus out there who are having actual supernatural contact with the Holy Spirit and experiencing Biblical manifestations of power. I used to be an atheist and I have to continually think back to where I came from but I always find myself dumbfounded at the massive ignorance of atheists. They think they are so smart but they dont ever seem to realize that you cannot experience or perceive something spiritual by using scholarly means. Its like trying to taste with your eyes, it doesn't work. Spiritual sense is something that has to be experienced to understand. It is like trying to explain sight to a blind person. I promise you that you have missed something. I would hope that you would be open minded and humble enough to give it a legitimate investigation but I suspect you have other underlying motivations to reject what I said. The fact is that evil men will always find some excuse to be evil and it doesnt matter if you eliminate religion or not. What the world needs is Christian values. The commandment of Jesus is that we love our neighbors as ourselves. If we all did that there would be a lot less problems. There is absolutely no arguing with that logic. To try would be to give away an ulterior motive.

I wont dismiss it if you will remember that it is the failure of people to live up to good standards and their unwillingness to try that makes them fall so miserably short. I understand some of your reasoning but I try to leave the judgement up to God and not condemn that which I cannot fully comprehend. This is more than I can say for the attitudes of others who claim to be Christians. That does not make them correct and it does not mean that God is unjust. You ask me if I am able to love my enemy. The answer is yes, in short fleeting moments I have accomplished this. It does not last as I am continually corrupted by anger, hatred and reoccurring unrepentant insult. It is not for us to be perfect but to strive for it. When I was an atheist, I had heard all the arguments and philosophies and I was very experienced in life without knowing God and I thought I had made sense of everything. I was wrong and I found that out the day I had an encounter with the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. I can tell you that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and there is power in His name. I know it sounds cliche and the demon thing sounds like eccentric attention grabbing but the fact is that Jesus is quite real and so are demons. We come into contact with demons on a daily basis. It is only through His power that I am able to conquer things like anger and lust. Demons are quite present around us but we often do not see what we are not looking for. Hollywood has given us an idea of what demons are supposed to be and what the devil looks like and if it doesnt fit into that box then it must be hog wash, right? No, most of the time it doesnt happen that way. Satan is much more subtle. Would you think the greatest adversary that man will ever know would approach him from the front wearing a red jumpsuit and asking for their soul? Someone once said that the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he doesnt exist. This is painfully true and heartbreaking. I wish I could articulate to you my incredible experiences and what I have come to know being truth the same as I know the sun warms the earth. I see though that it is something that others must learn for themselves and cannot be obtained through the speech of a stranger who holds little credibility. Good luck.

Justice Mars This technology provides people with the opportunity to live normal lives that you and I take for granted. Those suffering struggle to get out of bed in the morning, speak to their family, feed themselves and the worst part is that there are people like you that hold their religion and "morals" above those who need help. I don't give a shit about how you try to defend your religion, I don't care as it something that is your choice and if it makes you happy to bow down to a God who has in your eyes created this World then fine. You are also of course bowing down, praising and thanking the God who, by your reasoning, caused the suffering of the people in this video. The boy who couldn't control his muscles... according to your religion God creating a world where that is an occurrence. And you thank him and pray to him?! Meanwhile you criticise a technology that is helping them. Nice ideology you have there! Thank the God that created such awful suffering and condemn those who are helping those who are... ***** agree totally that the virus religion is one of the greatest dangers humanity faces!

It's funny. I was sure I had OCD. Then I remembered my childhood. First of five, always out in the dirt playing with the neighbourhod kids. I am now 64 years of age and my gall bladder has gone, most of my prostate too.... But I have had flu once in ten years and a few, yes, hangovers (headaches don't you know?). Guess I did DBS on my own at some point

The personality and dry humor on these speakers suggests they literally are two "mad" scientists. It is easy to see these guys as two menaces in a science-fiction film.
