Thanks for watching.

What are the chances someone actually had to do this!? LoL. Perfect!! Thank you!! Swapped a rear end on my ranger but the cables were damaged so didn't put them in. Got new ones and about to do this and was wondering how to get in there easily without a complete teardown. LoL

How did you relieve the tension on the parking brake cable in order to push that spring back with the vise grips? I can't budge it, the spring is too strong... Would have assumed that there would be a barrel adjuster somewhere before the cable Y-split, but nothing I can find.

Aside from making sure the e-brake isn't engaged, I didn't relieve any other slack. I used two vice grips, one on the end of the cable to pull and another seen in the vid to push the spring up the cable and clamp it off. It's not easy but the spring will compress enough to get you some slack if you pull the end of the cable and push the spring at the same time. Hope you get it done.

I'm having the same problem with my 91 ranger passenger side. The cable won't budge out of that coiled sleeve. The left side was no problem, but just too tight with the right side.

Bummer. You could try loosening the starwheel adjuster on the rear brake cylinder (I believe counter clockwise while facing the rear of the truck will loosen it) then give the drum some whacks around the face with a big old hammer and it should break free easier. The starwheel can be a pain to click, I use a bent Flathead Screwdriver.

I swapped a different axle into that truck. I agree, if you're talking about the plastic push in clips.

@@Box545x39 no the metal arm that has a groove cut in flr the cable to slide into the spring on the cable seems to hold it from falling back out.

You skipped the hard part. How the hell did you pull that cable out far enough to attach your second vice grip?

  • @Box545x39

Pinch the end of the cable with a vice grip or pliers, then I used the jaws of a second vice grip to slide up the cable (which compresses the spring in the same motion) and pinched the cable once I had enough exposed. Hope that helps.

@@Box545x39 Thanks so much for the response. I finally got it connected. The problem I was having was that the cable was so tight that I couldn't slide it up. I used your advice with the vice grips. I made one change so I could get more leverage. One vise grip held the end of the cable and the other held that vice grip against the backing plate of the wheel. With my freed hand , I could use bent needle nose pliers as a lever to pull the cable out. With the other hand I could slip the brake arm over the cable. I really appreciate your help.

@@knottreel No problem, glad you got it sorted. It's an easy job on paper, but once you get in there it's tricky to get everything to cooperate, lol.
