" *Grey hair grows faster* " That is why I *have* to color my grey roots at home. I can't afford to pay for my hair colored every 4 - 6 weeks at the salon.

Wow you have explained this so well. I recently started dying my hair with salon colours and found the numbers to be very confusing and didn't understand why my greys would randomly appear about 3 inches long despite dying my hair but I haven't been using neutral formulas. Thanks so much! Subscribed to your channel xx

Thank you, this is useful! I'm only 26 but saw my first grey hairs at 21. I got a significant amount of grey by my temples so when it hasn't been coloured in a while I can't put my hair up without showing all the grey and since my natural hair is dark brown it really shows. I hate it and it makes me insecure and I don't have the time or money to go to the hairdresser every 4-6 weeks . I want to start colouring/touching up at home but always felt nervous about doing it. This video is really informational and helpful! Your hair is gorgeous btw!

I have seen many videos in my quest for basic information about hair color and you are the best. No kidding, there isn’t anyone else who bothers to show color swatches and the tables illustrating colors and numbering systems. I need n to know more about using toners. There are a lot of colorists who use #6 or #10 developer to mix 1 1/2 parts developer with 1 part toner. I didn’t see you mention developer with toner in either one of your videos that I watched today.

My hair has been described by professional stylists as gossamer thin and poo burnt brown. I was 12. So, needless to say I started trying different. Colors. Blondes made me look too pale. Blacks made me look like morticia adams. Then, I found auburn, and fell in love with all the shades. Now at 64 I still love it. How close can I color without looking like I am trying to recapture my youth?

Kristy, I love your videos. I have been coloring my own roots and do my highlights for 16 years when needed. My grow out is 100% grey now. I use a 7NN and sometimes a dash of ash, although I think it makes the roots too dark and dull. I noticed you talked about using 30 Vol, which I have always used a 20 Vol. I do notice before I'm ready for a touch up again, which is every 3 to 4 weeks, it has a red tinge in the roots. I would like to ditch the Ash as I feel it makes the color look dull, but my question after seeing this video should I use a 30 Vol developer instead I 20? I am concerned about damage and hot roots with the 30. If you see this and answer I appreciate it!

There’s a reason stubborn gray strands tend to be coarser and wirier in texture. As well as losing pigment over time, hair gets a reduced supply of natural oils from the scalp. The cuticle, the outermost layer of every hair strand. Can be particularly thick and strong on gray hair. Under a microscope, a hair cuticle looks like a series of interlocking scales. If those scales are tightly closed, then moisture, hair products, and (in this case) hair color will have a hard time soaking in. This is why permanent dye formulas contain heavy alcohols or ammonia to force open the cuticle and guarantee color deposit.

Curly hair gets dry very quickly just because of the formation of the hair cuticle that you described. Similar to a palm tree top where the cut leaves are not closed, curly hair cuticles are not closed together really well so oil and moisture escapes. Scalp oil works well overnight

After dyeing my hair with 6/3+6/00, and I want to add the toner to seal the cuticles, what peroxide strength should I use, or should I just dilute the remaining colour the I just used in the bowl that has 20vol? Second. Question , why or how can I fix the translucent greys! I tried less peroxide and it didn’t fix the problem that much. I mix 50g of 6/00+25g of 6/3… what formula and ratio of you think is best or do I need to pre soften the greys with tint and a bit of warm water? Thank you

At the very end when you mentioned you would use a volume 30 on the 70% grey very fine hair person... What does the 30vol do that the 20vol does not do? I'm guessing it lifts the hair more bc you said I'd 20vol were used it would turn out dark and dull.

For years I have gone to a salon to have my hair professionally lifted from around a 7 to a 9. About 6 months ago I decided I wanted to go back to my natural level 7…but now I have about a 2” section right at the front of my hairline where I part my hair that is 100% white. The rest of my hair has barely any gray strands coming through, maybe 10% gray strands. How would I go about mixing the color to deposit it? My hair is very dense, but it’s a normal thickness and texture -not fine or course.

Hi Mich sand Thank you! Most brands have the same permanent hair colors that you use to dye your hair also available in the Toners. For example in Schwarzkopf if you dye your grey with a 6-0, you can look for that same color in there Toner (Vibrance)! You would then mix from “Vibrance (Demi-permanent)” 1:1 ratio Keep in mind the toners have their own peroxide lotion. You must use the corresponding peroxide. Example of a formulation : 10 grams 6-0 Vibrance 10 grams of 6 volume peroxide Apply. Processing time varies but 20 minutes should get the job done. Rinse and wash out! I hope this helps.

The only thing is that I have some grey hair, less than 25 % I think. And I 'd like to cover it simply. I love my natural hair color and I want to get it back without to much grey hair ! Btw I LOVE you hair, you have a gorgeous look ! I'd like to have the same 😉 Sophie.

@@sophiesylvain439 Hi, so basically your a Level 5 25% gray Texture is Normal Mid lengths and ends are previously colored and you can see a bit of warmth. Desired color is 6- Ash ( I assume this is your case ) What I would do is make sure your mid lengths are a level six. Since you are seeing copper I assume this either a level 6 or 7. 2 ways you can do this 1- Mix 6-0 (natural) and 6-2 (ash) equal parts with vol 20 developer Apply from roots to ends and prices for 20 minutes. Or, 2- Mix 6-0. ( natural) and 6-2(ash) equal parts with volume 20 developer and apply only to regrowth. Then make a second formula choosing the same colors with a Demi permanent like Vibrance. This you can apply to mid lengths and ends. I hope this helps!

My hair feels wonderful after color even just after normal shampoo. By day 3 it feels dry. The color goes on all the hair cause it's short. Any suggestions?

Hi Kristy thanks for your video. I color my own grey roots that always tend to wind up a little bit lighter than the rest of my hair. I don't have much grey maybe 10 - 20% and my hair texture is not fine or coarse. What do you suggest to avoid slightly lighter roots. I'd prefer not to go darker and want everything to be a 5 which is the color I use. I am a natural 4-5.

you need to go darker than your target goal. resistant gray has more cuticle layers. which is why it looks translucent. if you have resistant gray (tight, SHINY cuticles) you need more, more saturated pigment. so always use 4 if you want to be a 5. if you pull dark around the hairline, use a lighter color (maybe a 5 or a 66.0) 20 vol is optimum

Excellent and informative explanation. Thanks so much. A few months ago I had my hair highlighted and roots done, I have been trying to go more ashy with the highlights and colour because my hair tended to go orange after time with previous highlights. My natural hair is 6. I told the stylist I wanted darker roots because it would be easier for me to colour. The stylist wrote the colours used and toner used. When my roots had grown out I coloured them with a Redken 7nn and 20 volume like the stylist told me but my hair was so dark and the middle and ends lovely. A few days ago I went back and previous stylist was off sick so I had a different stylist I told her it was too dark at root area and wanted highlights to match ends and my roots doing. She did a 7nn on roots (although my hair is fine but lots of grey) and highlights turned out fine she toned the roots in 7nb and 9 (I think that's what she told assistant). After watching this video I think I should use a 30 developer. I wish I had known.

Hi Patricia I read your comment completely and if I were coloring your hair I would definitely go with the 30 volume. This is because your hair is fine and they are formulating with NN. So basically if you formulate with nn on fine hair you should use volume 30 and if you formulate with N then use volume 20. What percentage of grey do you have? I’m asking because if your hair was looking more warm that’s because of underlying pigments which brings me to think that you do not have that much grey.

Normal is light brown or dard dishwater brown. Hv tried all colors. Light as brown and the medium to dark ash blonde. I bought.. medium double ash blonde. Should I use 39 V so will not be too dark?
