How to Color an Old Photo using Free Software, Gimp

Gimp is an open source, professional photo and image editor similar to Adobe Photoshop. It is 100% free and can be downloaded
www.gimp.org/downloads/
This video shows one of the easiest methods for adding color to a black and white photo in Gimp.
Steps:
1. Open the black and white image
2. (if necessary) Adjust the original brightness-contrast in menu Color - Level
3. Open a color reference image, to select colors from using the Color Picker tool
4. Create a new transparent layer on top of the black and white image
5. Change the mode of this layer to Overlay
6. Select the Brush tool and choose a brush with soft/blurry edges.
7. Select the brush size/thickness. Begin drawing on this layer. If you go beyond the borders, you can always use Undo or the eraser tool.
8. Once the area is colored, the selected layer can be adjusted using Colors - Hue / Chroma
9. You can also shade the edges of the object with the Blur / Sharpen Tool, including blur in its settings
10. Repeat these steps for as many layers a necessary. Avoid using multiples colors on the same layer.

Helped me a lot. Mother in law fled Ukraine and doesn't have many pics. Repaired and colored an old ripped vintage pic. Turned out great! Thanks.

Okay, not only a very useful tutorial, but you took me back some. I have a classic headshot photo of my grandmother from when she was young, and she had hand-tinted it herself. A woman of many talents and a woman I miss dearly every day. Thank you for this. 🤍

I spent a long time figuring out all this layer stuff thinking there was a magic button at the end that would merge and fix it all up neat. I had more fun using the first few steps...then mix and match all tools transferring colour and smudge or spray to blend in /combine all and experiment.

I just recently started playing with Gimp and your videos have been incredibly helpful to me! I was wondering if you only use a mouse or if you have a digital pen pad and what do you recommend?

For some reason, the best kept secret in KZread is how old a video is. If someone can enlightmen me, please do. This video has to be ancient, at least 10 years old.

I am a beginner trying to colorize a photo as a modern work of art. I stumbled here but didn't understand anything. The screenshots are blurred and secondly I could not follow what you clk on etc. A good tutorial but for beginners it won't do. I want something simpler to start with. Any suggestions?
