Taking care of your calligraphy brush is important to have it last. The brush is the connecting point between your mind and the paper, so it is important to have it at a prestine stage. Brushes don't last forever, but they can last a long time when proper care is given.
In this short video I go through the 3 steps of how to properly clean your brush. These three simple steps are: 1) clean your brush right away, 2) use cold running water, and 3) hang the brush to dry. Click on the video above to find out more about these 3 steps.
When the bristles can't hold their shape anymore, start to come loose, and the brush feels weak, means it is time to replace it. Now, never throw an old brush away! Simply put it to rest in a safe place, or leave it hanging somewhere where it can be displayed. It is the ultimate form of sincere respect you can pay to the tool that helped you create your calligraphies.

Thank you for the tutorial and sincere words of respect to the old brushes. I always follow all three rules you mentioned, but sometimes bristles fluff up even on a newly opened brush. So a brush looks like tortured by static electricity. Does it depend on the quality of the brush? Is there any way to fix it?

Hi! Thank you so much for the tutorial. I just wanted to ask if you know a way to recover a brush witch's hairs open? I mean, when a use it for a while, the hairs split in two and even if I soak it on ink it won't go back to it's form until I wash it :(

Hello Esteban, i got a brush from my sensei, however, that brush got stored while wet and the hairs in it lost shape. My sensei has lots of brushes, so he didnt care to take the time to take the brush back to a good usable condition (the brush, even when soaking wet of ink, wouldnt form any sory pf point) Now, i took a good amount of time to reaally clean that bad boy, and now forms a nice point when wet, but it looses it once dry, qnd the brissles basically loose all shape and the brush looks like a cilinder of hair (instead of the flared and opened way it looked before) Do you know if this is normal? As this os my first brush and i have never used one (its brown hair, so not all that soft)

Have you tried brush guards? They're meant for natural hair makeup brushes, but should work for natural hair calligraphy brushes.

How should brushes be stored? Will they dry out from exposure to sunlight? (I have a set of brushes on a rack on my sun porch. Nice place to set up my calligraphy supplies for writing, but now I am worried that after the brush dries, should I store them in a box or bamboo roll up holder instead of leaving hanging in the sun.

Anytime anything is exposed to UV it will degrade.

Is it really possible to get clues about one's technique with a sword by watching his or her's calligraphy?
