Gohitsu Shodo Kai

Gohitsu Shodo Kai

Gohitsu Shodo Kai (The Enlightening Brush Japanese Calligraphy Association) is an independent western Japanese calligraphy society founded in 2010 by Esteban Martinez.

Gohitsu Shodo Kai aims to build a community of people looking to train in Shodo as a way to discover their inner spirit, enhance their senses, and find happiness. Unlike traditional calligraphy associations in Japan, Gohitsu Shodo Kai’s mission is not to promote calligraphy education from an academic perspective. Instead, we train in calligraphy and approach it from a Zen and martial arts point of view. We teach the technicality of writing Kanji in harmony with our kiai (spiritual power).

Hi Esteban, great to see you again. Something I've only really noticed is that your brush looks like it is fully loaded with ink, almost overloaded. 🙇‍♂🙇‍♂

I heard in a documentary that some kids are taught to write the kanji with breathing exercises, like meditation. And they do it in pen because you can't erase it and you learn to do it carefully. It sounded super cool but I can't find any info or details about this. Can anyone tell me about it? Apparently you have to breath out when doing strokes...or maybe it was in between. I can't remember, hence my search for info.

I'm getting slightly better at reading Japanese calligraphy (of the small percentage of kanji that I know, obviously lol). It definitely helps seeing it being written because I can see the stroke order.

I have tried Japanese calligraphy multiple times on my own but I always messed up the brushes. Decided they were simply low quality. Just got gifted a fresh pack of new brushes by a friend and your video found me.
