HOW TO Clean Rust On An Electric Motor Armature, Stator, Anchor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we show you a way to remove rust on an electric motor, for me specifically on the stacked lamination of the armature (anchor) and stator. The electric motor seen in the video belongs to an electric drill I have found in a crate with its motor opened, so I assume rust has developed as it has been spending some time in this state in a humid environment.
► YOU WILL NEED
- Steel wool #0000 (#0000 is important since is the finest grain of steel wool). You could alternatively use abrasive cloth / sandpaper, but I prefer steel wool since it creates a lot less of really fine metallic dust / particles that could contaminate the engine. Steel wool also allows me to make a little cleaning pad that I can use with the top of my finger. I get here perfect control and can see what I’m sanding. Sanding any wiring is a big no go!
- Cleaning gear: Brush / air compressor / vacuum cleaner
► DISCLAIMER
Always make sure you operate in a safe and secure manner.
For this project, take your time, work slowly and check progress.
It is essential to thoroughly clean the motor after removing the rust since fine metallic particles left may create shorts in the engine.

Hi. How would you suggest cleaning a very greasy motor? It's an old motor with cloth covered wires. The stator, armature and windings are just caked with grease (it shares a housing with a geared grease filled transmission). I've heard to use mineral spirits or hot water and soap. Then heat an oven to about 100 degrees and let it dry out for several hours. I figure soap and water may be less aggressive on the old windings, but don't necessarily like the idea of using water. I have also seen brake cleaner used by some. Thanks!

I worked for an electric motor rewind/repair shop. I used to write the quotes You disassemble, steam clean the motor (hot steam, simple green, zep) Then you bake at about 250-275 for 4-6 hours 100 degrees is not nearly enough. The objective is to evaporate all moisture. Water boils at 212 100 degrees gives you warm water 250-275 for 4-6 hours assure all the moisture is “baked out”

We saved motors that got flooded. As long as you don’t energize them, they can be saved Disassemble, clean the inside (flood water is dirty…so the same steam clean and bake applies) 250-275 for 4-6 hours and the motor is saved

Wow very nice. I am rebuilding a greenhouse inflation fan-extremely small squirrel cage motor. As you might expect, it is covered in rust. Even the copper wiring. It is super thin copper winding so I have to be very careful. I had no idea what I was doing when I started this 3 weeks ago. Thank you for your video!

Found my dad's chop slide saw in the man corner of northlondon most overgrown garden. We removed all his u powered tools from there bin bag covers and I want to bring them back to life, it's a mac alilster slide chop saw with twin lazer guide so it's nothing much to get excited about. My dad's passed away and I should have made shore his tools were taken care of. He died while tinkering away and I put a tarp over everything cut off the power and let a year go by.. My bad my bad.. I'll strip every thing down clean it up and replace what carny be fixed. I'm doing it soon as I finish this last bottle of his home brew. At lest that improved after 14, months of neglect.. Bleeding spot on lads. Cheers dad.

Thanks for making the video concise and void of the corny lo-fi DYI electro bank music. Question: is there any type of anti-rust lubrication one could apply like dielectric grease? Since it's conductive and what-not.

The armature is submitted to high RPM so am keeping those dry. Anti-rust lies more around storage in a dry area.

@@TheLabOtomy First off thanks for the speedy reply. I should have mentioned it is the for a small sized fan I have that I just busted out for summer. You could tell that it is really fighting itself to even spin at low rpms. On the highest setting. I plan on taking the armature and cleaning it. As far as my options on hand for afterwards is: dielectric paste, oil for my electric clippers,pb blaster, and silicone spray. I can always hit up the big box stores, but seeing if anything I have on hand would work. Thanks again for videos and speedy reply!

Rust is conductive and shorts the laminated plates which effects eddy currents and flux density.Look up why a stator is not a solid block of metal rather they are stacked metal plates.

@@leoszilard3998 Its been a year but I think I meant why did he not also clean the dirty contact portion above the plates too (commutator) I agree the rust could case (some) eddy currents and power loss doubt it would stop it from working as the stacks are for efficiency. I have not cleaned enough of them to really know how much rust affects them. But yes I think your answer is the best one so far. I imagine it would create hot spots in area and heat up the meat more than it normally would. I thought those plates were insulated, so after cleaning you must spray a think layer of clear coat on them to prevent more rusting?
