How to Clean out a 275 Gallon IBC Tote Container

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video will show you the steps it takes to clean out a 275 gallon IBC water tote. The first step is to rinse the chemicals out of the tank with your hose. Then you close the empty valve and put 56oz of Dawn dish detergent and refill tank until there are no more soap suds coming from the lid on top. Next, you empty tank out again and then leave empty 2" valve open and rinse suds from the tank. The next step is to close the empty valve and pour 2 pounds of baking soda into the tank and then refill with water, making sure the baking soda gets dissolved all the way in the tank. Once the tank is full again you empty the tank one more time and it will be clean. I don't recommend how you use your tank, just what my family used it for.

If you happen to be in the Chattanooga TN area, you can get food grade tanks from the Little Debby factory. This may be an option with other food companies. Their price for 275 gallon is $59 plus tax. Great quality. The 3 I bought look brand new.

Careful with putting gasoline in them. Some valves use EPDM gaskets that may leak over time. Some use a FFKM or Viton seal which is fine. You can buy a Viton seal for IBC valves for a few bucks online if you want to be sure. I don't know if an EPDM gasket started leaking if it would be a slow leak that you could catch or just completely let go all at once and dump all your fuel. Then again, the seal may be tight enough that it may not leak at all even if the seal dissolved. Just throwing the info out there.

The valve he has is a Quick Connect. You can buy 2" fittings online with male or female thread or Tractor Supply or probably other farm supply stores. They slip on and have a lever on either side that you squeeze in that locks them in place. If the end has a course thread, it's called a buttress thread. It's a European hydraulic thread. You can find those online by googling IBC buttress thread fitting. Some come with standard pipe thread on the valve but those are usually less common. The Quick Connect ones will also have a few threads of pipe thread on the end that's used for a dust cap that comes on them. You can screw on to those but you can generally only get about 2 to 3 turns on the thread.

Here in Middle Georgia, we sit on top of a huge underground water aquifer. Water that hits the ground goes right back into the aquifer, eventually, after it filters through. You can catch that gray water if you want, and dilute with fresh water, DIY filter with small rock, sand, charcoal, etc., and use for your garden. Also, when using an IBC tote, no one is stopping you from using a house drinking water filtration setup. For those who say this is wasteful, find a method to recycle, or/and move from your location. Californians, specifically, are screwed over by the government they've elected. There is documented waste, and the direct diverting of water into the ocean. Water is available in California, the government there has chosen to deny people so they can control them and bleed them financially. Tough break for those who didn't elect these morons and criminals; it's too late to fix it, you have to move or be destroyed. Believe me, your politicians will not do without, and most will survive quite nicely, unfortunately, unless citizens get their hands on them when all falls apart.

Would not advise anyone to use a non food grade tote. The plastic in these totes is very porous and can hold chemical for a long time. Many farm pesticides are highly concentrated with use rate of 1 ounce per acre. You are playing with dynamite if you reuse these containers.

Proper CIP procedures don't use 10% of the water you used. It is much more effective as well. Simply filling and draining is not enough for biofilms. What you've done is helpful, but not enough for future food use.

This process make NO SENSE to me. Putting soapy water in this container did nothing to really clean out agricultural chemicals. This is like doing dishes by dipping them in soapy water.

This is a bit useless video. I have food grade ibc tote tank that is fighting coming clean. First tank cleaned great fast, second tank is really fighting me. Food product caked in tank. Dawn dish soap is great stuff but not a cure for everything alone. My second tank has been filled, soaked days, and pressure washed several times all with dawn. I have several tanks so can recycle the water and add more soap as needed. Beware that not all farm products are food safe! Many bug killers, weeds killers, fertilizers are safe for plants but not people. Animals also may not be harmed by some things that kill us! Ever here about the farmer that caught a mess of Mercury contaminated fish and fed them to his hogs? Pigs/Hogs did fine, but he and most his family died eating the mercury fed pigs/hogs. Dawn is great stuff but does not do everything

I don't know about FarmBoy's set up, but we're on spring water. Anything we use goes through the house and into the septic on its way to the creek; anything we don't use goes into our overflow directly down to the creek. Use it, don't use it, it doesn't make a difference. This is MIND BLOWING to this girl who grew up in Southern California. Yes, water is a precious commodity that should be protected... But it isn't scarce everywhere! 550 gallons of water being filtered by the land, back into the water table, vs a big hunk of plastic and metal unusable because it isn't cleaned.... It's a no brainer.

Steam it. Cold water and no agitation does zilch to clean it out. What a waste of water, and you just dumped a thousand litres of junk on the ground next to a crop in the field. Total fail.
