Thank for watching our video on how to clean out a 275 Gallon IBC Tote/Tank Container. IBC (Intermediate Bulk Containers) totes make excellent liquid storage containers. Here is how you clean one out in time to use for your next project.

Love the valves on these. Years back we had to climb into the big black round ones to fit the valves, still remember that scrabbling around in the dark stinking of concentrated blackcurrant juice even after they had been washed out!

Hello how did you remove the very thick syrup from the tank?
I love these things, buy them all the time for all kinds of projects. Every one that I’ve ever run across has been galvanized steel. They are so light, I believed they were aluminum at first as well. Just wanted to share that in case anybody is looking to use them in any fabrication type applications, as I do. You could always just test it with a magnet to double check. Steel will attract, aluminum will not.

A little extra information on the totes. They come in two main sizes. 275 gallon and 330 gallon. You can get them on a pallet that is metal, plastic, or wood. Most come on a metal pallet. The cages are lightweight but are actually still. They are aluminum and they will rust over time but it takes a decade or so. There are three main types of valves that come on them. There is a ball valve, a flapper valve, and a cylinder valve. The ball valve and cylinder valve are the best ones. The flapper valve doesn't last as long. You can also get them with a 2 in bunghole in the cap. The bunghole and the main valve at the bottom are generally both standard fine thread 2 in valves. It's very easy to make an adapter for whatever you need with commonly available materials. Hope that helps someone!

Not to be a stickler, but the cages are galvanized steel, not aluminum. Hence the rust over time. Otherwise 👍🏻👍🏻
Mine had Canola oil, glueten free and organic from Canada. There was about 5-10 gallons of residual oil I drained but I haven't found a way to clean the rest out that coats the bladder. It's thick and nasty stuff. Wish I didn't get IBCs that stored oil, water soluble ingredient totes would be easier to clean, fyi.

Mine had oil too and it wis definitely a mess :(
You could load the IBC tote onto your pickup truck, fill with about 75 gallons of water (about 600 pounds), add detergent and drive around a bit. The stop and go action will agitate the water/detergent and save a lot of work. Also, you could wait for the sun to heat the water and then drive around.

Now that is a creative solution, I like it! I don't think the hubby wouldn't let me take his truck for that kind of a joy ride, though :)

Thank you for your comment! These totes are surprisingly easy to lift. I was able to get them on and off the back of the truck bed by myself. Although it is a little less cumbersome with two people. All I had to do was lower the tailgate tip the IBC Tote on to the tip of the tailgate and I was able to shove it on
An old fashioned rag mop works well

What is the recommended bar pressure for cleaning an ibc tank with a pressure washer
@Suburbanstoneage

Hi! I used a Harbor Frieght pressure washer, I don't believe if ever changed the pressure from what it came with.
I have an idea I want to get an opinion on. I want to clean out a food grade IBC and hear hot water will do. Would it work if I hooked up my water heater to my pressure washer? I need to drain the heater anyway and I can always let it cool a bit before actually running the pressure washer.

I think warm but not hot water would be ok. But hooking a pressure washer to your water heater directly seems a little dangerous to me. What was in the tote before? I ask because sometimes it takes several washings, you could use water from your water heater drained regularly for the initial scrubbing and rinse with a pressure washer hooked up to a hose.

Nice! That is a good deal!
What state do you live in. After 4 years what condition is the plastic tank?. Is there any cracking, brittleness and is the wooden pallet rotted yet. The ones for sale near me all have Plastic pallets. Also have these IBC totes been covered by anytype of roof structure. I live in Ohio so we get 95 degree weather in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. Most blogs only have totes lasting in the weather for about 2 to 3 years. Would you recommend now just buying a couple of 800 gallon tanks and 250 to 300 gallon pickup farm type tank. .

Hi! I live in California, After 4 years, the tanks are still sturdy, but I have lost interest in storing water in them. They can still be used for no food/water projects though. They have had a wrapping of shade cloth around their cages to protect them from the sun, but that's it. The heat out here is terrible in the summer, 100+ F often. In winter, temps get into the teens. It may be better to buy the 800 gallon tank if you have the budget. just make sure no one can steal it. That's happened around here too.
Its too long opening speech...

Can anyone tell me why I have rust/ iron like particles in the bottom of my tote? Also after 4 years one started to leak out the bottom of tote. They are stored inside in the dark

Perhaps have your water tested? It sounds like there may be particles coming out of solution. A water test may help identify the chemistry.

totes are made from a cheap plastic material. Most totes are only used one time. The companies then sell them for 10 to 30 dollars each. If they clean them, it would cost them 80 to 160 dollars due to having to use chemical drain pits. Even fish/sunflower oil is a chemical you can't dump down a drain.
Maybe hang the tote upside down and power while power washing with hot soap water.

It is a good thought, but you'd have to get it high up to see where you're washing (which may be a challenge). , plus you'd have hot water shooting out the bottom all over you while you washed.
$200 for 8? Poggers dude

Pressure washers usually have extended nozzles that you can stick in through the lid and swirl around.

There is a pressure wash nozzle that pushes the water at a 90° angle, 360°👍
If you have veggie oil in these you can collect it and run an add locally and I’m sure some that makes bio diesel would grab it. I cleaned mine by putting about 50-60 gallons of water in it with 5oz of dawn and drove around with it for a few days doing my normal running, drained and then added about 60 of nothing but water and drove around then drained again, was pretty clean after that. The 275 gallon totes are about 125 pounds empty if they have the metal pallet bottom. If I was going to get something to store potable water then the new clean food grade blue barrels would be a better choice and you need to keep them in the dark and add a small amount of bleach to keep algae from growing in them. The clear and white totes will grow algae in them if you don’t add something to prevent it and keep them covered to block the sunlight out. That was a heck of a buy on those.

Thank for your comment! I like your trick, and will give it a try! And yes, darkness is pretty important to keep the nasties from growing in your tote.
Your soapy water will still have oil in it, not a great idea to introduce this water to the garden.

Thank you, I agree. We use a special soap that breaks down in the soil, but normal soaps can harm plants.
