There should be no rebound feel on the plunger when it's primed according to the workshop manual.

The lifters are normally spongy when new once the engine is built up the oil pressure fills them up, engines are normally slow to start because of the valves only partially open till oil pressure builds up then the hydraulic lifters start to do there job.

I’ve got this weird issue with hydraulic lifters, they seem to be pumping up too much whilst the engine is running. I have one cylinder that has no compression but when I bleed the oil out of the lifters and reinstall them the compression comes back. Don’t understand how it’s happening!

Use diesel fuel, submerge pump as long as the old oil deposits will come out then leave them in clean diesel over night and do the same in the morning and .they will be like new. After cleaning prime with new clean oil and install. Don't install them full of air or in short time they will be tapping again !!!

Do the lifters go back in a certain way? I noticed a small hole on the side body of the lifter and wondered if that needs to align to something.

  • @BulliKid

No that small hole maintains oil pressure

Good video on how to clean the inside of the hydraulic lifters. Does the engine/car shop manual tells you to bleed out the lifters before the installation? I will be cleaning the hydraulic lifters in my Mitsubishi Pajero iO 2.0 gdi and the shop manual says that the lifters must be cleaned in diesel fuel and then installed with diesel fuel inside (no air is allowed at all). The main reason why the lifters make ticking noise is because they got air trapped in them. So, I would recommend doing a further research whether you install them full with oil ( or diesel fuel) or not.

I don't think used oil is the way to go, but ok.. In any case, if I was in your shoes, I would use the pre lubrication purple oil for engine rebuilds. Also, because I saw your videos until now about the cyl head, I would used, a dremel tool with some metal brushes to clean the tough spots in the head. Those brushes are soft although metalic and they can clean metal sirfaces with ease and almost without scratches.

This engine will not be running again. I didn’t mind. As long as it’s lubricated.

Replace the the lifters always. Soak new ones in kerosene and wd 40 for one day and install with assembly lube in opening please or they will stick again da

  • @richardried4197

Should really use kerosene. It has oil content soo you don't dry everything up

  • @wiley0714

    1. Do you have to be delicate when hitting the purge valve otherwise you could damage it pressing it too deep. 2. You do NOT want to purge them and install then. There supposed to be firm against the rocker arms. (Think about the fact that every single time you start your vehicle these lash adjusters are already filled with oil). When you buy them they are usually filled with a manufacturers oil. I could understand if you want to purge that small amount of machine oil out, for the type of oil the engine uses (5w-20, 0w-20, etc), but that's about the only time I would purge them.
