How to choose the stereo signal to be sent over USB - Allen & Heath QU Series

By default the USB output sends all channels an most outputs over the USB cable. Many people are either using a stereo only device, or software that only records stereo by default. These stereo devices are only reading the first two channels of that USB signal and discarding all the other channel information. As a result we need to specify what information we want that stereo device to hear, and then assign that information to CH1&2 of the USB output. In this example I’ll set MIX9&10 to the USB ch1&2 so that the stereo device doing the recording will hear MIX9&10
(Although I’m working on a QU16, the principal is exactly the same on any other digital mixer with USB output. If you are sending USB signal to a stereo device, you must configure the CH1&2 outputs)

Rob, this was by far the easiest and straight forward QU-16 tutorial video I have watched. Thank you. Even after doing this, I still cannot get levels from the USB that are usable. They are entirely too low. So wonderfully clean, but so horrifically low. I worked in radio for 20+ years and I can tell I didn't listen to the engineer enough. It just seems like there's a magic button I don't have pressed. The board seems great and the laptops we have are pretty new, I just cannot get a workable level. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thx for the kind words. Glad you found it helpful. You are not alone on the issue of low levels for USB. It’s actually by design to ensure that levels don’t peak and become overdriven. There are two options. The easiest is to simply normalize the tracks after recording. Second is to increase the Direct out level since that’s typically where USB is tapped.

Hi thx for joining us. It would depend how you have setup your incoming audio. If you only have a single audio feed from the desktop to the qu16, then there is no way to mute only part of that audio. You would need to deal with that on the desktop before it goes to the mixer.

Hi Rob - we record multitrack into the QuDrive. We run a house PA mix too. We want to add streaming through USB B with a different mix. The manual indicates that QU Audio Output Selection is SHARED with QuDrive. If I use mix 9/10 as a stereo mix (separate from the PA mix), and I select Mix 9/10 in USB Audio Channels 1 and 2 as your video shows... will that affect the Qu Drive recording? In other words is QUDrive recording Mix 9/10 plus channels 3-16 instead of native channels 1-16? If I'm right, we should only use channels 3-16 for inputs that we want to record. dSnake inputs 1 & 2 will be empty.

Thx Nhat. Hope you found it helpful. Unfortunately USB recording defaults to the direct out of each channel since the vast majority of those recording prefer not to include FX. Also the FX engine will process and include all channels assigned to that FX, so by default you cannot record a channel with FX as a separate discrete channel signal. The only way to record a single channel with FX is to first assign only that one channel to the FX and then set a USB record channel to pickup the designated FX return signal.

Great question Bryan. In the QU setup the designation of “Left and Right” can be confusing because it doesn’t really mean a stereo signal. By default, all channels are panned full center so signal goes to L&R equally. The only way to get a true stereo signal is the adjust the Pan on each individual channel. If you want signal in left only then you need to move the Pan of that channel to the left etc.

Welcome to the qu24. The LR association with 17 & 18 is limited to the qdrive one the qu16 specifically. The qu16 only outputs 18ch total so it defaults LR to 17 & 18. The qu24 however will output a total of 32 channels. This allows you to use you to use the first 24 USB ch as the 24 input channels on the board. The last 8 USB ch can then be assigned outputs should you want to record those. In you case to record LR, decide which USB ch you want to use (25-32). Lets say 25-26. On the output Patch / USB audio tab press the 19-32 button to get to the second page. Tap 25 and use the input dial to set it to L, then tap 26 and use the input dial to set it to R. In logic you should now be able to record LR on chs 25-26

If you can see an audio level coming into 25-26 ytou should certainly be able to record that signal. If nothing happens when you press record, is it possible you have not armed 25-26 for recording?

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Hey Rob, Nope, 25-26 is armed. When unarmed no signal shows. When armed it gets a very weak signal. I'm fairly certain its connected correctly but for some reason the return signal is just too weak for logic. The signal increases and decreases with the master fader. Im not sure if its a malfunction on the unit itself. It was a "slightly blemished" unit from American Musical Supply. Also, the DAW Controller section doesn't work on this as it should, that isn't a main concern. But being able to capture a stereo track back into my DAW is! lol

Rob - related but need your help - 2 Q's please: 1) This video talks about routing a mix to USB. Other videos show how to route a mix to QU-Drive for recording (ex. route 5/6 to Ch. 17 and 18). But those videos and the AH user guide ONLY address "Stereo Recording". My question is if I route Mix 5/6 to channels 17/18 but do a MULTI-track recording - do you know if 5/6 will end up on 17/18? Meaning recorded tracks 1-16 are the individual input channels, but 17/18 are my routed 5/6, not the default L+R? 2) I've seen sources that say you CAN choose which of the 18 tracks to record multi...like inputs 1-5 only... but don't tell you how. I cannot find any way to do this. I've also read it's always all 18, no choosing. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Great questions. 1) That is correct. Assigning the channels for USB is a single interface that applies to both USB ports (rear port for a computer and the front port for q-drive) 2) Yes you can choose. Open the USB dialog screen where all 18 channels are listed. Tap any channel to highlight, then use the dial knob to choose the channel to be recorded in that spot. You can also dial it all the way around to "X" to essentially turn out off. NOTE however: the q-drive software will "record" all 18 channels regardless of the source you choose. Some of the resulting WAV files will simply be blank...but you will always got 18 of them

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thanks for the quick response. I have limited access to the venue's QU and don't have a lot of experimental time with it. I'll route mix 5/6 to 17/18, do the multi-track record, and check the recording after the show. (The goal is mix 5/6 attempts to capture the band's performance mix, whereas Main outs 17/18 are the house reinforcement mix - they'll be quite different ;^). Thanks again. Vids are super helpful.

Actually Dave, the USB setup is exactly the same on each of the qu series boards, so there is no diff on the qu-32 from what I demonstrated using the qu-16. Also not sure what more of a step by step I can offer than Ive already done on this video. Perhaps the issue is in the config on your pc. What software are you using for your livestream?

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 I heard someone say something that the QU-24 and QU-16 would show up on the computer as QU-16 ST1 and that it wouldn't be the same for the QU-32, therefore my question. Thanks for enlightening me! Currently using OBS. After commenting on your video i watched another one and apparently when a QU-32 sound desk is connected to OBS, OBS doesn't recognise it as an audio device so supposedly we have to download a driver called OBS Asio to do so. Also I saw someone say that we have to go on Processing then Source and change everything from Local to USB B Streaming. Am I right or is there no need for that? Thanks in advance

  • @soundadvicewithrob3083

    @soundadvicewithrob3083

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes, OBS will require an asio driver (downloaded from their site I believe). Changing the source for channels only impacts the “input”. You are selecting the location of the incoming source signal for the channels your change. local = input signal for that channel comes from the physical XLR jack on the back of the QU32. USB = input signal for that channel comes from the Qdrive USB device plugged in to the top of the QU32. USB streaming = input signal for that channel comes from the USB port on the back of the unit where you have your PC/MAC computer connected. Its unlikely that you are playing back audio from OBS into the QU32 so you really have no need to change any channel input sources.

Thx for the question. It depends on your software and if it will allow you to choose to record each channel of the stereo signal onto a separate channel. I know for instance that Audacity will NOT. It only sees the incoming stereo channel as a single input signal

If I dial the usb I/O patch to channel 1 to matrix L and channel 2 to matrix R I should be able to control the level going to either OBS or Zoom as long as I have QU Stereo out selected as my audio input.

Sorry you’re having issues but I assure that you dont need to toss the QU16…once you get it sorted it will do fine job. Let’s try one issue at a time. 1) How do I hear them and how to have them record in pro tools. Make sure that your USB setup is 1 to 1… in other words on the USB setup screen (which I refer to in this video) USB1 = Ch1…USB2 = Ch2… USB3 = ch3 etc. Next for playback, make sure the source for all QU channels is “local”. In other words the QU is taking input signal from the XLR connection for each channel physically on the desk. Once thats confirmed, then pro tools should see each of the channels on the QU as an input. Set each track to record a channel from the QU. After recording, assuming you then want to replay that recording you need to change the input source for each QU channel to be “USB”. You now want the QU to take the input for each channel from USB rather than from the XLR port.
