HOW TO: Choose the Right Hay for Your Guinea Pigs | Squeak Dreams

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hay is THE most important part of our guinea pig's (and rabbits!) diet, so how can we pick out the best quality hay for them? I recommend the following factors to look out for when choosing hay (often you have to purchase it and open it, but you will know for next time!):
* Information on the package, as a general rule, packaging with more information means better quality hay.
* The smell test! Does it smell nice and fresh when you open it? If it smells musty it could be mouldy.
* The feel test! Hay should feel dry and definitely not damp. In the UK watch out for small bags of uncompressed hay, in my experience this hay is often damp, indicating it has not been dried properly and may contain mould.
* Dustiness: Hay should be dust extracted. It might say this on the packet but judge for yourself. If you and your piggies are sneezing because of dusty hay it might be time to try out some different brands.
* Greeness: how green hay is isn't really a true reflection of the freshness, different grasses retain colour differently.
* Long strands vs short strands: Long strands are better for your guinea pig's and rabbit's digestive systems.
For people in the UK I recommend Lunnun Dust Free Hay as it passes all of my tests and contains a variety of grasses. It is also good value and available in large bales to order online or in WCF Pet and Equestrian stores. I also feed Alfalfa King Timothy hay (available in Pets at Home) alongside, as the guinea pigs love it and it encourages them to eat more hay. This is only available in small bales so costs a lot more, hence the combination of two hays.

I don't know why, but in my area, there doesn't seem to be a truly good quality Timothy hay available. I especially avoid that sold in the big Discount chain stores because what is sold in them has entirely too much dust. I finally found some hay of decent quality, but it's the short-cut type. The most ironic part of that is the place I buy it is a Farm Equipment store. But, sometimes you have to look in unexpected places to find what you need. I have to go to a different Farm Implement store to get my Guinea Pig Pellet Food, but at least it's good quality at a good price.

I live in America and one of the best brands is oxbow hay, it is amazing, for a 90 gram bag I can get around a month of hay (refilling 3 times a day, sometimes more if they need it) it is really nice and recommended by vets and the strands are really nice and long And have the little flower bit in them, they have all different varieties, I recommend the western Timothy hay but there is meadow hay and other types as well

Spot on, good video, 😎 I have been on a quest to find the best all round feed hay since the Alfalfa king thimathy hay became increasingly difficult to get hear in the UK! I recently bought the Dust Free, the one you have in you're video they liked it, untill l tried Knaw and Knible, they like that a lot ,especially the 2nd cut! It's the closest to Alfalfa king thimathy that l have been able to get! Pets at Home in my kneck other the woods ( liverpool. UK) stock it but only periodically!

Thank you for making wonderful videos. I'm probably one of your oldest viewers, and you've helped me become more informed so that I can give my piggies the best life I can. Unfortunately, not all of our hay is great in the US. The kind you get at walmart has some good pieces in it, but ends up being a huge pile of dust at the bottom of the bag. I hear Oxbow is the best quality, but it is quite expensive. I am also trying to find one that is decent, with long strands without breaking the bank.

Great video as always! I bed my piggies on hay, which I change everyday, so I do use a meadow type, different to the pure pastures one (the name excapes me!) but it comes in a fairly decent size bag relatively cheap. The strands are long and it smells good so hopefully it's ok for them. I will be getting them a bag of Timothy hay the next time I'm in Pets at Home though, as they haven't tried that yet. (For eating rather than bedding though!) Thanks for the video :)

Hi, Aussie here. Loved your info on the different hay. I usually buy the meadow hay from my local petbarn as I found the dept stores way too expensive. From your vid, I'm pretty sure the hay I get is about your #2. I can get a 2kg compressed bale for $12 or so and for two piggies it lasts about a month or so. I have seen the alfalfa king in 2kg non-compressed bag in my petbarn but at double the price of my meadow hay, I just can't afford that. Saying that, I don't give them pellets, but a good quality rscpa food blend that also inc dried banana chips and some hay that the piggies just love.

This video was so useful! As I live fairly close to the city I can't access fresh hay from my local farmers so I have to buy from pet stores, when I used to buy hay from my closest pet store the hay was cheap and bad quality, I once found a dead rat in it! I stopped buying hay and started buying pet store brand hay (I would mix it with Burgess Hay) from a pet store farther away, but the strands are really small and thin! So I'm going to either find a pet store that sells Oxbow Timothy Hay or order some online (probably the best I'll be able to get, and it's kinda overpriced) Aha I swear Australia has like nothing good for small animals, I order almost everything online!

Aloha, thank you for your wonderful videos. My piggie doesn’t eat much hay. There isn’t a good selection in Hawaii. All I can find is Kaydee Timothy Hay, sometimes Orchard and I’ve seen Alfalfa but heard that Alfalfa has a lot of calcium? I give him plenty of fresh (and as fresh as available) hay daily and Oxbow Garden Select Adult Guinea Pig food with Timothy,Oat and Orchard. His habitat is cleaned twice daily and he gets fresh veggies morning and evening. I’m retired and a just about always home with him. He’s my little boy and I adore him 🐹❤️.

I'm in the US and I've tried Oxbow, SmallPet Select, and KMS Hayloft. Right now I have 2nd cutting Timothy from KMS Hayloft and I'm a bit disappointed... it's much more coarse and not as fresh smelling as the 2nd cutting Timothy from Small Pet Select. Next time I'll try the 3rd cutting Timothy from KMS even though it's pricier. I personally prefer SPS and KMS to Oxbow. I'm spoiled because both companies are in my home state of Washington, so shipping takes no time at all!

I use Oxbow Timothy hay at the moment, but in 2 occasions, Oxbow hay has had these little stabby tiny splinter(?) things in it that have gotten stuck in one of my piggies’ eye. (It was the same guinea pig both times, poor thing.) They also got stuck EVERYWHERE in one of my favorite fleece liners, and took forever to pull them all out. So, beware Oxbow. I’m trying to find a new brand that I can trust currently.

When I had rabbits I bought 150lb bales of timothy hay from my local feed store for under $30. It would last me anywhere from 1 month to 6 months. (I had a lot of rabbits). I once compaired the price of hay at the petstore (8oz for $6 I think) to hay from the feed store (100lbs for $25 I think). It turns out that if I bought the same amount of hay from the petstore that I bought from the feed store the petstore price was over $1,000 for 100lbs. It is crazy how overpriced petstore hay is. (sorry if these numbers do not add up exactly. It has been 8 years since I did the price comparison and this is just my memory of it. I do know the weights and the final total are accurate).

She is very tame just hates being picked up.But i am a little worried about her because she has had soft stool for a while and i have tried cutting off all fruits and veggies but she still has soft stool. Wish I could affordably share my 50lb. box of Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay (grown in Nebraska) with anyone desperate to feed it to their piggies. And I'd love to check out Burgess blends. Ho hum. Maybe one day it'll be easier...🙂

Wow, this just goes to show New Zealand hates hay other countries have. I need help! Getting a piggy called Dumpling soon, and I need to know the best quality hay! Sadly, I'm in New Zealand so reviews from New Zealand are hard to find. Any help? :)
