How to choose fishing rod power (weight) and action

Спорт

In this video I will explain the difference between power and action in a simple way. I use the terms power and weight interchangeably in this video.

I always say it like this. Power is how much muscle it takes to bend a rod. Action is where the rod bends and how quick it returns to straight.

Hi. I taught high school and also had a fishing club for 15 years. So many students graduate because they had a connection to school they otherwise wouldn't have. I agitated for two years to begin a fishing class--true credit courses. I was successful and the class become the most popular course in the school with waiting lists. It only makes sense. Fishing dwarfs all other sports combined in money spent, is a life long endeavor and in Ontario where I started the program there's 400,000 lakes and rivers. Most schools have outdoor programs where students go camping, canoeing, hiking so it's not a big stretch to make a course with fishing as its focus. Congrats on what you do from one teacher to another. Tight lines.

You lightly touched on it, but line choice is almost as important as rid power and action. If you want to throw cranks on a fast action rod, pair it with mono for that stretch to absorb the fish fighting. Additionally, those numbers on rods, more like suggestions and not set in stone.

Length is important. Length matters greatly for what type of platform you are fishing from and what you want to throw. Out of a kayak, youll want to go shorter with a short seat to but length. On a boat, it doesn't matter so much. Length will also add greatly to casting distance and your ability to muscle in a fish. Especially in a situation where you want to quickly pull that fish from cover or structure. A longer rod will give you more power to pull it out quickly.

I don't ever use reels in that size so it would be hard for me to say since this video was basically referring to bass fishing. With that being said, it still depends on the technique you intend to use that rod and reel for. If you are still fishing for catfish with live bait for instance you would wand a rod with a very strong backbone for setting the hook but a fast tip to detect the bite - Heavy power with a fast tip. I hope this helps.

I assume you asking about a rod for bass? If so, I would recommend a a medium to medium heavy with a fast action in the 7- 8 ft range. As I said in the video, there is no standard in the rod industry. What this means is one companies medium heavy fast action 7 ft rod may be entirely different from another company. You are going to have to actually try out several brands until you find one that can cast the weight you are looking for.

  • @highschoolfishingcentral7753

I only use braid however the rod companies put a lb recommendation on the rods based on monofilament. This recommendation is based on line diameter so a 8-10 lb recommendation for mono is probably a 20 - 30 lb braid equivalent.

I fish a lot of smallmouth waters on the Great Lakes where it is a must to make super long casts. I use spinning rods in the 6'8" - 7'4" range that is medium power with a fast or extra-fast action. I also use some of these newish superbairds that are very slick like PowerPro Super slick. With this set up I can cast a 1/8 ounce jig incredibly far with little effort.

The HEAVY rated rods have the most "backbone" which means when you set the hook and fight a fish it will bend less though the majority of the rod. The tip or the furthest part of the rod from the handle will bend during the hook set and when fighting a fish. This means a 7'0 Heavy rod with a fast tip will feel different than a 7'0 Heavy rod with an extra fast tip. Both will have good backbone but the extra fast will be more sensitive and bend more towards the tip during the fight. I hope this makes sense.
