Fishing Rod Power And Action: What These Terms Mean & Why They're Important

Ойын-сауық

Picking out a fishing rod can be confusing with the different power ratings and action…
What do those terms even mean?
And to make it even more confusing, there’s no real standard to power and action, so one medium power rod might be equivalent to a heavy power version of another rod...
And one fast action rod might be the same as a moderate action rod of a different brand...
So how can you pick the right rod for you?
In this video, you’ll learn what the definitions of power and action are when it comes to fishing rods, what you want to look for in a rod, and how to do the “feel test” to see how a rod stacks up against others.
Have any questions about choosing a fishing rod?

    With a tiny bit of experience all you gotta do is hold the rod out and twitch/quickly snap the rod as you feel and watch the tip. That'll tell you all you need to know about action and sensitivity, not to mention weight, ergos, guides, etc. You can feel the power and feel/see the action. I try not to take brand new rods I haven't paid for yet and push the tip into the floor.

    Check out the Tsunami Backwater rods. They're only available at Walmart. Best value in rods I've ever found, and I've used $20-$200 rods. The Tsunamis absolutely put a whoopin on inshore fish and they're only about $30. Unbelievable value.

    I'm packing up my flyrod right now for a trip down to the Keys... the main reason for going down is to spearfish and then catch some lobster for mini-season, but I'll try to get a fly in front of some tarpon and/or bonefish if I get a chance.

    Sooo, I tried out the whole scent thing y’all had a video on. My wife didn’t follow it, guess who caught fish? That video was on point, thanks guys! The trout were extremely finicky, wouldn’t hardly bite anything, if they did, it was just a quick pop and nothing afterward. I free-lined some finger mullet and hooked into a 19”, not very big, but my new PB. I’m growing and learning all the time.

    Is the line strength range rating universal (i.e., applies to braid, mono, flouro, etc.) or for specific type of line (e.g., braid)?

  • @strichards5337

    @strichards5337

    3 жыл бұрын

    Generally speaking, it’s universal. 20lb line SHOULD perform like 20lb line whether it be mono, fluoro or braid. BUT ... obviously there will be diameter differences AND not all line strength ratings are perfectly exact for the line. Some manufacturers may claim 20lb but in tests it breaks frequently shy that rating while other line may rate at 20lb but usually far outperform and break well over its rating (tons of KZread on this). Again this is all generally speaking. Buy good line from reputable manufacturer and have confidence in its rating. But cheap crap from CHN and take your chances.

    I have found that quite a few if not most line ratings are for mono line. Some rods will say momo rating and braided line rating on their website. So, I end up comparing diameter of mono to that of braid to determine the line rating of a lot of rods. Is the line rating for the TFO for mono or braided line?

  • @Saltstrong

    @Saltstrong

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the Power rating is defined by terms of weight (light, medium heavy, etc.). The action of the rod is usually shown on the blank too... it's defined by terms of speed (fast, extra fast, moderate, etc.).
