How To Choose A Motor - DIY Electric Skateboard Build

Ғылым және технология

In today's DIY Electric Skateboard Build Tutorial, we dive into ESK8 Motors. Learn how to choose a motor for your DIY Electric Skateboard build. Today we go over what the numbers mean, how to size a motor, what KV ratings are, and more information on brushless motors. At the end of this video you should be able to choose between belt driven and hub motors, and be able to decide what size is best for you.

I think you glossed over one important thing... dual motor vs single motor braking. Dual motor is going to bring you to a stop quicker which if you are going faster than 20mph is vital imo. It also provides a failsafe if one belt snaps under hard acceleration/braking. I still have my hub motors from my meepo board but I am looking at a direct drive system in the far future. They are new and expensive so I'm not surprised you didn't include them in this video. Plus you don't sell them 😜 I already knew all this information but wanted to see how you explained it plus your videos are relaxing. Great job!

Thanks for the comment! You are absolutely right, definitely should have mentioned the failsafe of having a 2nd belt just in case. Also should have mentioned the faster stopping power of a 2nd motor. Didn’t mention direct drive because they honestly deserve their own video all together. Just too few options out there along with the higher price point. Thanks for watching!

Very helpful video thanks for the info. I appreciate the replaceable wheel skin, for a downhill or freeride skater the wheel can be much smaller after a day of skating. If a race on a motorized skateboard is anything like downhill you could have some sick burnout drift races. Also some induro aspects to long distance races. Regenerative braking for charging the battery? Very interesting prospects.

Thanks for the showcase in motors. I'm curious if you have thought of the magnet length inside the motors? There are long motors which aren't intended for skateboard use but people shoehorn them in for powerful braking and regen. ie. Instead of 6355 its 63 and the length is 80 really weird but it works with wide trucks

I am making an e-mountainboard, considering lower kv makes for better torque, will a 140kv 6374 motor, 8 inch wheels with an Mboards 10s 3p give me good hill climbing performance?

Hey man this is a great video... I am a mechanical engineering student trying to make my own board. However I am not that great at eletrical stuff and I would like to know how to get the appropriate battery (and which type) for the motor we have chosen. I know there's big differences between lithium ion, lipo batteries but considering i want range and speed as well how do I chose what kind of battery and how many of them (lithium ion) would I need to be able to get enough power out of them to get to specific speeds. I knew my question is weird I just hope you understand it. Great video btw from a scientific point of view it helps a lot when you want to get a lot more technical.

Very interesting. My board has hub , 3000 watt total,35 kph 25 k range, and goes up 25 percent hill. I would like more speed and keep the hill climbing. Looking around at options it seems to be a case of gain on one and pay with another. On the sound side of things, I just love my Razor longboard. It may only be 120-watt gear drive but that sweet turbine-like scream, the best. My 3000 watt total is a Black Hawk Electric Pro series V3.

You also need to consider contact patch. If you use a single powerful motor and you're slipping backwards you should back off the accelerator. 270kv is good for hil climbs and it's strong enough to work alone. I hill climb a lot and I use Large-Hub direct drive motors for torque and range.

If your current board is using HUB motors you’ll most likely need to change the ESC out as well (many ESCs are programmed for either HUB or belt). Just be sure to get an ESC that works with your current battery’s voltage.

Looks like the stock motors are 5065 150kv motors. You’ll probably need to stick with 50mm motors if you aren’t planning on changing the motor mounts. You’ll want to look for a higher KV if you are looking for some more speed.

electricboardsolutions.com/products/evolve-motor-mount-pair mount for 63 motor for your evolve, and i recomend maytech 6374 motors evolve should use one of this original almoust no one use this small evolve motors any more they are biggest problem with this evolve boards if you are heavy 80kg+ or ride offroad a lot i think they just hmm very hot, right ?

Question: you’re mentioning KV rating and how it relate to motor description/classification…what if you see a classification in watts…such as 800w….1300W and so on. How do you evaluate those?

do these have regenerative breaking or would they be too inefficient on drag? like would it work only downhill? Or would you be able to coast on flat without any? because it seems like you should literally be able to push it back to 100% lol.

You forget an primordial point! Comfort, vibration, shock absorbtion! With hub motor you're going to feel every roads imperfection, even with shock pads and a flex deck. It's why I was going from hub to belt, the comfort when riding is night and day

Plus outrunner motors work most efficiently spinning fast; as such belt reduction will always be more efficient, even with the parasitic losses the belt adds.

@@EitanTsur look "ALWAYS" may imply all other variables unchanged but TO BE EXPLICIT direct drive of many wheels.... 6 or more on a board allows low rpm efficiency!

@@fojrsepta4959 not quite... There are two factors there. If you run 6 motors you're simply running them all at lower than their power rating in their inefficient power band at low speed. They are still inefficient at that speed, and in fact, you will consume MORE power trying to produce a given torque than a smaller number of appropriately sized motors. In addition, every motor has end winding power losses. There are no magnets on the axial ends of the stator so any power going through that part of the windings simply does nothing but generate heat. As such, if you take a single motor that is say 80mm in stator length and compare it to two motors that are otherwise identical but 40mm each, the two motors will consume more power than the single larger motor producing the same torque. This adds up the more motors you use.

@@EitanTsur YOUR ignoring the peak efficiency at other than extreme torque and rpm design. Since needing less power from a motor allows it to be operated at maximum efficiency when providing needed power I stand by my point which I made fully aware that to increase power beyond efficient your point about using proper motor type is all IMPORTANT. Efficiency is SOME times a luxury. Using VEHICLES that weigh much less than we do makes it tolerable to generate heat INSTEAD of work. However articulated etc. board designs allow millipede evolution values to gain performance without increasing battery size and weight for any distance. Human power can be harnessed if storage has bandwidth despite novel delivery by shredding or WHATEVER. Going fast uphill requires real energy but again humans if kept cool can output four figure power briefly with short recovery times. The board pair market is undeveloped. Dry ice skates are shoes that shove converting down forces to forward and augmenting to drastically increase impact times reducing peak damaging forces to body and upping skipping SPEED to useful compelling and ecstatic...
