Today we show how to check the oil on the 2010 to 2017 Chevy equinox
and will include reading the level on the cross-etched area of the dipstick.
For safety and accurate reading, make sure your engine has cooled down before checking the level.
Begin by pulling the hood lever under the driver side dashboard.
Open the safety lever under the hood, by pulling it to the right and lift up the hood.
On the passenger side of the engine, you’ll see a yellow ring, that's the oil dipstick handle. It's right in front of the engine oil filler cap.
With paper towel or rag ready, pull the dipstick all the way out of the tube
and wipe the oil off the tip.
Then, reinsert the dipstick all the way back into the tube.
Wait a few seconds and pull it back out.
while holding it level, look at the cross-etched area...
the oil should be anywhere in between it…
this one is in the middle in which is good, above or below this area, is bad.
here’s a better look at the cleaned cross-etched tip.
if below it, need to add oil, if above it, it’s too much.
I prefer it in middle.
reinsert it back in and if adding more oil, take the filler cap off here and using a funnel add as needed.
The type of oil is on the cap as well.
If you need to change the oil, click on the end-screen at the end of this video.

Great tutorial John! I also always like to wait a few seconds once reinserting the dipstick again for a reading to make sure the oil has a chance to accurately re-coat the dipstick. Have a great weekend! 👍

Got my son an Equinox for his first car, which are known to consume oil. Trying to check the oil on Chevy's bulb style dipstick design is a nightmare. You can put the stick in 5 times, and get 5 different oil level readings. I've literally checked the oil 10 times, and then just went with the level that it indicated the majority of the times checked. Since it is a thick, round design, it scrapes the residual oil that is in the tube as you pull it out and smears it all over. The simple flat metal stick that I have seen in every other vehicle I've ever owned over the past 30 years has worked just fine. Not sure what Chevy was trying to prove with re-inventing a dipstick, but whatever.

My Equinox started burning oil. It's only happened once and I'm hoping it's an isolated incident. It has been really hot out lately I don't know if that has something to do with it. Anyways if you have any insight on this or if you know of any history of this happening I would appreciate it because I really don't want to have to replace my engine. Please and thank you

Do these engines have a reputation for using oil? Because the one I’m working on is not leaking oil anywhere it doesn’t burn oil out of the exhaust yet there’s never oil on the dipstick.
