I owned this vehicle for 9 years. Got it from the dealership. At the 30k miles started getting rust in the inner door paint, at 70k miles my exhaust manifold cracked and we started getting oil burning. At 90k miles GM (recalled) completely redid the piston rings and replaced my rear seal. At 100k miles GM (recalled) had to replace all the catalytic converter and O2 sensors. And since 70k miles, I have to replace the VVT Exhaust selenoid every 6 to 12 months. I also had to replace the rear bearing and the front axle, but I guess is to be expected at 100k Miles. This is a nice car, comfortable ride, but man, if GM wouldn't have done all that recall work, I would have spent about $8k in repairs, that's about 30% of the cost of the car. Solution.....never but an American car, other than a work truck.

The 2.4l suffers from LSPI it stands for Low Speed Pre Ignition. It stems from a bad PCV design from factory on the dirty side PCV. No real fix other than prolonging it. The issue people have is low oil consumption, this occurs from piston blow by. The blow by is caused from pressurizing the crank case under WOT (Wide Open Throttle). The intake plenum is under a constant vacuum at idle and loses it at WOT. The dirty side sucks gunk and fumes into the (faulty location of orfice) intake plenum and when u der load at WOT, it pushes that gunk into your intake and thats the crap you see in the PCV line that plugs into the intake. This part freezes in the winter and creates pressure in the crank case and causes rear main seal failure. (Fix this issue properly with a cfm oil cap. Part fc-219. It vents at 2.2psi and keeps vacuum and PCV operational without pressurizing the crank case. Now the LSPI comes into play when all that crud goes through the throttle body and into the intake runners. On a non gdi engine, fuel washes over the intake valves. On a gdi no fuel hits the back side of the valve as its directly injected. The intake valves builds up with carbon from the red hot valves where it builds up and gets hard like lava rock.. and as chunks fall off the valve they become oil and gas saturated, they burn up and cause pre ignition, these are hard as rock and jagged, they score pistons and cylinder walls creating piston blow by. Service bulletin is to replace pistons and rings. I replaced mine with JE Forged in my 2012 Equinox. easy way to correct engine knock and pre ignition is running premium fuel. Higher octane delays ignition of the fuel. Also get the fc 219 oil cap, change oil at 3000 miles and never use seafoam or any other intake valve cleaner as this can create further damage, best way is to have them professionally walnut blasted or just replace them since they are cheap anyway. I suggest doing timing sets and balance shaft/ water pump as well since these are famous for timing issues and over advancing the phasers. Info is from myself, a previous 8 year journeyman GM tech who has heard and seen it all

So this Gumout job is not worth trying?! I've seen a dozen or more videos on various 2.4L problems and in the comment sections I see the vented oil cap pop up. I think it's worth trying, I found it on RockAuto and plan to purchase it along with some other Equinox parts, spark plugs, Tstat, etc.. I plan to clean some things up on the intake side, motor medic/ oil change, coolant flush and see if I can get this thing to smooth out. 2010, Equinox with 138k. Piston and Rings replaced at 64k under warranty in 2014. In addition to the FC219 cap, do you think installing the Vincos 400ml catch would help? I know it has to be cleaned out often, monthly, similar to cleaning the PCV tube, especially during cold Chicago months. I'm not sure this is better than the catch can... kzread.info/dash/bejne/loR9rKaeY626XdY.html

I have a 2011 Malibu with the LE5. It doesn’t burn oil but it does have what I think is blow by. When I remove the oil fill cap I get a lot of pressure coming out. No oil or anything but a lot of pressure. Is this normal for this engine? The PCV seems fine. Removed the intake and the orifice was clear. The car idles rough in drive but smooth in Park and Neutral. Any ideas? Thanks!

If anyone I had commented too was wondering, I was a certified Mercedes Benz Technician for some years. I was also certified with VW. I have about ten years of Factory experience. With issues like these, and they happen to every manufacturer, there must be checks performed, once we determine the fault is valid, the factory performs the work. But manufacturers also do not wish to be ripped off by anyone who is a "squeeky wheel". The class action is dumb. They said, we will fix your engine, but we must be sure there is a problem. Plaintiffs said, I don't wanna let you do your check. I'll just sue, and then people jumped on the bandwagon. I do not work for GM, but I understand the process of this type of repair. I had a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. The 3-4 shift fork was made out of aluminum. Which says nothing of the quality, as aluminum saves weight. The car was under warranty, I bent the shift fork during a hard shift. This happened to many of our cars. GM performed a replacement of most of our vehicles at no cost, they replaced with steel, which would ensure the issue would not arise again. The fact is, most people probably don't shift that hard, it is a fine line between GM saying end user negligence, and well, we could have made a stronger part. I was grateful they repaired my T56, before anyone says they are crap, they are also used in Dodge Vipers. They also replaced some synchros and maybe reverse gear as well. I was the second owner, and I did not strip gears, I did not have synchro issues either, there could have been minimal damage caused because once the shift fork gets bent, there transmission does not want to go all the way into fourth. As far as I am concerned, they went above and beyond to make me happy. They could have said, this is your fault, customer pay. I think they even replaced my clutch, which is a wear part. I still drive GM.

I'm sure it varies from dealer to dealer, but ours took care of us multiple times. Water pump chain and tensioner at 28k, fuel pump at 30k, balance shaft chain and tensioner at 56k and ring and piston replacement along with multiple gaskets at 64k after consumption test in 2014. Only reason I don't hate GM. It seems they tried, despite an engineering flaw with the PCV system and weak plastic timing assembly.

I'm a little late to the party but I have a 2011 equinox with the same burning oil problem. Was putting oil in it every few days as my job is 50 miles away from home. I finally got the chance to talk to someone knowledgeable and they told me to buy a bottle of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and put it in when I change my oil and since I have done this I only had to put about 1/2 quart in to top off, and it's been a month now since I added Lucas. It has saved me tons of money so far, hope this helps someone else. Good luck

@@danieltyson2953 it's been about a year and Lucas worked wonders in the beginning. I noticed recently that I'm having to put oil in more often now (about a quart every 10-14 days) but I think it also has to do with the age of the car as well as the defective piston rings that I missed out on the recall for. I read that you can put up to 50% of Lucas in during an oil change to help so I'm gonna try to put 2 bottles in next time and see how it goes. Almost time to trade my car in anyway so I'm trying to keep it running as long as possible 👍

Thanks a million for posting this!!!!! It worked great and saved me lots of $$$$$. I went a couple steps further to stop the excessive condensation issue as well by replacing the PCV valve, shortening the PCV tube (so it tilts forward instead of backward), cleaned the air intake chamber, and replaced the oil cover with a breather cap. I added a quart of Lucas high mileage stop leak to my first oil change after all the cleaning. 20,000 miles later I'm happy to report that my 2011 Equinox is not burning oil anymore and I only have to clean the oil breather cover once a month. I have 179,000 miles on the car so GM is of no assistance and I'm tired of paying repair bills that are ridiculous!!! Thank you again!!!!!!

So far as the recall thing... I went to a dealer and they said they needed to do an oil consumption test. It needs to burn at least 1 quart in 1000 miles or they won't cover it. Well, mine just fell short. You can imagine I was not very happy. Update.... about 65% left in the oil change ticker. I had to add about 1.5 quarts. It might be better, but not fixed.

My daughter wanted an Equinox so bad that's all she talked about. Bought a used 2013 LT from a local Chevrolet dealer. Right off it was going through oil. I could only find a slight leak, so I just kept adding oil every so often. Then one day I was driving it and it started to running rough. Right after that the check engine light lit up. Went to an Orielly's down the street and got the codes. Main issue was the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid/Actuator's were bad. Had to change the intake and exhaust at the same time ($100.) Light gone...fixed, right? No! Right after this it began having a rattle when you first started it. I was pretty sure I knew what it was. Removed the valve cover and checked the chain and yup it was loose. Apparently someone else had previously removed the valve cover since two bolts on the back side were way loose. Luckily I am just good enough and have enough knowledge to fix such things. Those of you who do not have the tools or know how, pay for it. She also owes a few years on it and I told her to get rid of it when she can. Not sure if the 3.6L is any better. Good luck to anyone who purchases these cars.

Barry A. Part of the problem is if the oil isnt changed soon enough is that the oil control rings get gummed up with carbon and sludge, and the gumout disolves it allowing the ring to seal like it should and stop the oil burning

  • @Packer1290

    @Packer1290

Get on an open highway, Throw it into 3rd gear, accelerate to 75, then take your foot off the gas, and let the engine brake the car to 40, then repeat this procedure 4 times. The engine braking, and back pressure created on the engine will make your piston rings spin and dance around on the piston. Any carbon will get knocked off. When yo7 accelerate, you will see black smoke come out the exhaust- and this lets you know you are performing the procedure correctly. Also, you can put 6 ounces of marvel mystery oil in your fuel and oil prior to this procedure. Repeat every few months to keep it clean

Take it to a different dealer. Our dealer didnt wanted to run the test on ours at 90k miles in it. "All cars burn oil" they claimed. Took it to a different dealer, 120k miles in. They ran a 1000 miles at a time test. After the second 1000 miles, the technician told us we were burning a quart per every 1000 miles (we already knew this, was buying gallon oil weekly), and proceeded to schedule the car for repairs next day. The problem is faulty gasket and seals, no amount of cleaning is going to fix that, instead it will show you how much worse the condition is, since you wont have the dirt keeping the oil from leaking out.

If you still have the car, use only the GM approved (label will say Dexos-2) pure synthetic oil, and change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and at the same time always change the oil filter with a premium quality filter. Amazon sells this oil in 5 qt. jugs for $19.99 delivered free with a Prime membership. Using heavier oil does not help a thing, and may gum up the valve actuator solenoids and the valve actuators mounted on the two camshafts, thereby causing expensive problems. This engine has tighter tolerances than you might expect and it is designed to use only the specified oil, unless you are driving in 95 degree heat or hotter on a daily basis; in that case call the dealer and ask about the grade of oil you should use. For the oil burning problem, try putting in a $30 oil catch can; there are numerous videos on KZread on how to do it. Oil is cheaper than pistons, rings and seals; check your oil every time you buy gas and carry the right kind of oil in the vehicle at all times. My Equinox is a 2010 with the 2.4 L Ecotec engine, and at no place in the owners manual, or in the letters they later sent out about the many engine problems, did they state you needed to be using pure synthetic oil of a particular grade, or that the oil needed to have the Dexos or the improved Dexos-2 labels on the container; nor did they tell you to change your oil more frequently than the dashboard reminder indicated. If your engine is a little loud, check out the crack in your exhaust manifold, in the middle close to the O2 sensor between the 2nd and 3rd runners; the crack is hidden by the heat shield and can be very hard to get to and hard to see without a good light, but chances are it is there. GM has not recognized this defective manifold problem yet, but because untreated exhaust gas escapes into the engine compartment, it is also an emissions control issue, which could force them to fix the problem.

John Miller Your car has a plugged up PCV orifice inside the engine. Since it is plugged up, you get high pressure in your crank case. An easy fix is to buy a $ 80 one way vented oil cap from cfm 800-943-1203.... problem solved. The dirty side PCV orifice... leave it plugged up.... the clean side PCV breather hose, visible on passenger side of engine, is easy to clean... clean it. The breather oil cap is the solution, get it before. You blow a rear main seal,,,, it is the seal that fails first.

But, like I said, they're brand new. - Perhaps I should trade it in in two years? Any thoughts from you car pro's? I'd appreciate it. - *"Fair winds and following seas" to all.* From a 20 year, aircraft carrier man. Boy, do I have stories.

I've also heard reports of success with marvel mystery oil soaking overnight, but in my case, I ended up changing the pistons and rings. Also did the timing set. GM wouldn't cover it, in my situation (assholes) but u may have some luck. If not, it's expensive, but if you're decent with a wrench, you can save a ton of $$$.. lemme know if you have to bite the bullet like me, and i'll give you some tips to prevent the problem in the future. It does show proof as he says, its been 1000 miles since he last changed the oil and if you own a 2011 equinox like i do, you will know that after a few hundred miles, there is NO oil left.... Driving 1000 miles with 160k and it not lose oil is AMAZING! I just had to add 4 quarts to mine after 300 miles... almost screwed up and ran it out of oil... This engine is a POS... literally, a Piece Of Shit.. Always sounds like its rattling out! TRASH

A legal ettlement has been reached from General Motors. Letters should be going out in the next 2 weeks. This is information from the legal team that is handling the lawsuit. I have a 2013 with 75k miles on it and I am caught in the middle in between the dealership and GM. In the settlement, GM has agreed to a 100% free repair after going through an oil consumption test, however, they have told me that my portion is $1600. I told the dealer I am not paying for it and they said I need to file and get a case number. This has turned into a major headache. GM Customer Service has not been helpful either as they are telling me to go talk to the dealer, so it has turned into a ping-pong match...I will update my post as I get more info. I would NOT recommend using the product that you have poured into your engine as this will most likely void any responsibility on the part of GM for any further issues.

My wife bought a used 2011 Chevy Equinox and it's been a piece of shit from the beginning. We've had to put two timing belts on it, it burns oil like hell, now the O2 sensors and catalytic converter are up next, probably needs new rings and pistons. I'll never even consider a piece of shit Chevrolet, wish I could get away with burning hers and collecting insurance somehow or sink it in a lake.
