Very professional and detailed video with a focus on safety. I like how you did everything by hand rather than using an impact drill. I also have a Honda Odyssey which helps with knowing where to place the tire jacks. The tools will pay for itself after a few tire swaps (about $200 for fall/winter & winter/spring). Hello Sean, you can easily repeat what I did. The first time might be a bit slow as you double check everything and move cautiously. Then you’ll say to yourself “why didn’t I try this a long time ago and what can I do next!”

I just did my snow tires swap today and I suggest you lower the tires just half inch after touch the ground then torque the lug nuts with star pattern, then you can drop the car. Not torque when you put whole weight to the tires, you hand tight the nuts are too loss, I can see the centre bore off from the rim. same thing when you break the torque, lift the car up, take off the weight from tires but tires still touch the ground.

When you have the tire off it would be a great time to check your brake pads. And the wheel nuts should be retorted at 100kms.

Do we need to worry about getting them balanced in certain intervals?

No, it’s not necessary to balance your tires, unless you feel a vibration in the steering or floor after swapping the wheels. If you happen to notice uneven wear on the tires your taking off, then go in for an alignment. Hope that helped!

Interesting - I’ve never heard that nor do I know any mechanic or garage that has stressed that point. Honestly, I don’t see any advantage as too why that would need to be done. When a professional shop takes off the lug nuts they usually place them on the lift so the order becomes mixed. However, I’m always willing to learn as well, so maybe one of our viewers have some insight on this.

What do you do when the car uses TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system)? Can I just install a winter set of wheels/tires without it (and just ignore the TPMS warning light for the few months)?

Yes, you can just ignore the dash light for the months you have the winter rims on. I ignore it for the duration that I have my winter rims on. When you switch the rims in the Spring, it usually takes a km or so of driving, then the light goes off on your dash as it detects the sensor.

Is anti-seize necessary to use on the inside of the rim? I saw it in another video but am not sure.

It’s not a bad idea. It will help / prevent rust from forming which can make the wheel very difficult to remove. You may have heard of people kicking the rim, using a hammer on the tire portion or even driving the car with the lug nuts slightly loose to break away the contact points in order to remove the wheel. This can be problematic in an emergency situation such as a road side flat tire. So, a bit of anti seize can be beneficial for future wheel removal.

Is it much more difficult to change a tire (I mean to replace it completely) at a low temperature? I did my 1st tire, balanced it, and ready for the 2nd one, but the temperature here dropped. I saw in one film how they heated the tire w/heat gun, but how much, where exactly, all that is kind of vauge. Also in that film they were working on tractor tires, I have just regular passenger car (R16 tires). My HF Tire Machine is mounted outside, while it is snowing I won't do anything, but tomorrow it will be clear. So I decided to do a small research on the subject meanwhile. At what temperature you can change tire more or less comfortably, can you do it @45F, or it is too low? My main concern is that I can tear the tire or burn it w/heater gun. Generally, tires that are at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) work best before they are flexed by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels, or using them to support, roll or drive - so get it to 40+ degrees. On really stubborn tires where the bead just doesnt seem to wanna pop on, heat the area of the bead and sidewall all the way around the wheel, this heat softens the rubber and also builds more pressure in the tire, which eventually pops the bead on. Careful when putting a whole lot of air in it to pop the bead on!

@@YourHomeGarage Thank you. I think I'll just try a bit, if it would be hard @45F I'll continue next week (we are in Dallas and expect ~50-60F). Smb wrote me that a passenger car tires are thinner than tractor (in the film I saw the heating of the tractor tire, when they changed it) and shouldn't be heated, bcs if overheat they loose some properties. But I'm curious how in the Northern states, is it people change tires only somewhere inside, never outside. I've read that winter tires are not effected that much by the temperature variations, since they are more elastic. I have All Seasons, so I'll see. My main concern is not to tear that tire when I put it on. About the bead seating, I have very small compressor 1Ga Fortress, so it doesn't give much flow of pressurized air. Surprisingly it worked on the 1st tire. Thank you again.

That’s the wheel hub - which can be cleaned with a wire brush.

The performance consequences of running directional tires incorrectly (backwards) can be significant, so tire manufacturers clearly mark directional tires with an arrow/rotation direction on the outside tire sidewall. All directional tires will have the rotation direction indicated on the outside tire sidewall. Sorry if the video didn’t clearly pick that up on the tire.

I placed the hydraulic jack on the tow hook in the rear to lift it.

Do you think I can able to do that on my own in my own garage as a female? Got proper tools for it though.

Absolutely you can do this in your own garage. I love just supervising my kids (daughters) when they change their wheels. As a helpful hint - an extra set of hands can be useful when lifting the wheels until you get used to the weight and how to set them on the wheel studs.

So I don't need a drill set to do this? I noticed you just tightening by hand and then using the torque wrench. That's it?

Correct. Of course a high torque impact drill would make for lighter work, but as you can see it’s not needed.

Great question - the alignment should be checked periodically, such as every second oil change. However if you notice uneven wear the tires you’re taking off for a winter replacement, then get it in for an alignment right away. Also use a tire depth gauge vs just eyeballing it.

Never fill your tires to spec without the weight of the vehicle on them... right?

Great question! I’ve done it both ways but with one caveat. If the tires are completely flat then I fill them before installation. If I can feel they only need an few pounds, then I install and fill. What you want to avoid is placing the weight of the vehicle on a flat tire that will put strain on the sidewalk or bead. So bottom line, if you fill the tires before installation, then you’re always covered and good to go.

Hmmm all of those materials will cost about $400 at least where I live. So I guess if you’re doing this twice a year after 2-3 years you’ll start saving money.

The initial outlay can be a lot, but you can do so much more with all those tools when it comes to other car services. In my area the average tire swap is $80.00 - so with two vehicles and two swaps a year, that kind of gets you to breakeven. Everyone’s situation is different, so you could be spot on with 2-3 years before seeing a savings.

Great Informative Video! Just a minor suggestion: It is a really good idea to remove those little stones and debris stuck in the gaps of the tire which can cause real damage if gets pushed further if tire lands on another stone on the same spot. Just to increase the life of tire.

it has NOTHING to do w/tires. it's replacing wheels (might as well have been a wheel rotation).

@@YourHomeGarage looks like pplz use same words interchangeable or invent new usage of the same word. i was looking to replace one tire on a wheel with another tire ON THE SAME RIM. granted, some may read wheel = rim+tire. but then they should say 'change a wheel' (which also perfectly fits other 'change tire' ). if u take a sec 2 read the definition of the 'tire' in a dictionary u would c. as 2 your ?n - I was looking for a vid 2 replace an old tire (on the same tim) w/a new 1. same applies 2 the definition of 'wheel'. so, actually u r replacing wheels, not tires.
