How To Change Summer And Winter Tires By Yourself (With Rims On)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I show you how to change your summer and winter tires by yourself. The process is really easy and can be completed in less than an hour. The only stipulation is that the summer and winter tires must each be on their own set of rims.
Most cars come with all of the tools that you will need, so you won't even have to spend any money.
Follow the steps in the video and you will be putting on your summer/winter tires with ease!

    Good video. I understand that your trying to save money by doing it yourself and thats great, but I have a few tips to help you with your process and safety. First, the best way to use a scissor jack is to place that hook bar through the jack twist and if you notice your tire iron has a boxed hole in it, Place the hook bar end into that hole and while holding the hook bar with your left hand spin the tire iron with your right. Similar to using a speed wrench. Second the pattern you were referring to as an "x" pattern is know as a "star" pattern in mechanical terms. It only truely matters when installing the tire so that rim seats flush against the hub before your torque the nuts but if you use it during removal it couldnt hurt. That leaves me with the last tip, lug nut torque. While tightening the nuts down until they are snug is great for lets say changing a flat until you can get to a tire shop, you really should torque the lug nuts down to the proper oem spec. For safety reasons. In your case on the 8th generation civic the torque spec is 80 ft lbs. I hope you do not take my comment as rude or cocky I am just simply trying to help a fellow DIYer.

    OK good tips but how do you measure the torque with a manual tool like the one he used? Also what about tires rotation? Heard you are suppose to rotate them to get even wear? My tires are new would it matter to have rears in fronts and vice versa?

  • @sktaggart

    @sktaggart

    You have to use a torque wrench to measure torque, no other way. Tires should be marked and rotated to wear evenly. You can look the pattern up.

    @@sktaggart a torque wrench isn't the only way to apply the correct torque, there are several other ways. The best alternative to a torque wrench is the use of hand held luggage scale on the end of the tire iron / wrench / ratchet handle. You can find the formula for working it out readily available online, alternatively there are webpage calculators for it. Either way, it's easy. 👍🏻

    Couple of tips - Always have the handbrake on. Always loosen the lugs before you start with the jack, you dont want the force of loosening the lugs throwing off your jack.

    If you're going to do this twice a year, invest in a real floor jack, a pair of jack stands, an 18" or longer breaker bar, and a torque wrench. Emergency jacks aren't made for repeated use and aren't really safe to hold the car up in anything but an emergency. The breaker bar will get the lugs loose much more easily than a tire iron. And a torque wrench will help you tighten the lugs PROPERLY. Also make sure the rotor hats (the surface the wheel mates with), the studs, and the wheel mounting surface are all CLEAN without rust, so that the wheel mounts flat and snug. Mark the previous mounting positions of the wheels with chalk or a sharpie & masking tape when you pull them off. That way, when you mount them again in spring/fall, you can mount them in rotated positions. Finally, use the opportunity to inspect tires for screws, nails, or broken glass.

    Amazing video! Very clear, easy to follow and professionally done. I never realized it was this easy. I knew it was not hard but I always thought for sure there was some trick or specialized procedure that you have to be very careful with so I never tried it. I guess you do not have to balance and/or rotate them?

    A few tips for newbies. Make sure it's in park, and the parking brake is engaged. Never place your limbs under the car, as the emergency jack may shift, and fall down on you Always be in a position where you need to move away quickly in case shit hits the fan. Put the other tire under the car as a safety measure. The car will drop as low as the tire that's under it. Loosen the lug nuts before you start lifting with the jack, as someone said before, it may shift and be unstable. Invest in a proper rated floor jack & stands, 1/2inch drive breaker bar & torque wrench, and a 6 point socket for your lug nuts.

    If they are still balanced then you can swap them directly. Generally they are not going to go out of balance if the tire is left inflated on the wheel.

  • @doriangray2347

    if the tire is already balanced and mounted professionally, the wheels never need to be aligned. The alignment happens without the wheels. You use the wheels during the process of aligning a car, but the wheels should be interchangeable and all of them aligned. The suspension gets aligned and set, the wheels should be standard. formula 1 cars do not do alignments every pit stop, an example of this. The car is aligned once and all the wheels are then aligned. Get the tires inspected and tested for balance when you pull them off. They will be perfect for next season then.

    Bad to do this as you are twisting the frame. Both front wheels should go up together, that's why you need two Jack stands together. Also Jack's eventually fail and start to lower the car slowly when they do. What you gonna do WHEN it fails and there's no stands under?
