    Dude your video was a lifesaver today. I noticed a leak coming from my OFHG and ended up changing that out today. Performed the oil change, and realized I also needed to bleed the coolant since I removed the hose to get to the OFHG front bolt. Your video was the easiest to follow, and it made it super easy to tackle. I'm waiting for the last of the coolant to drain and luckily like yours it's pretty clear. Going to run a couple gallons of distilled water just to be safe. Thanks!

    Hey JD, You're killing it with the videos. I'd love to see a video on how to swap out the differential fluid and transmission fluid. There's loads of high mileage e9x's out there and most haven't done this. You're videos are always so clear and easy to follow. I'm from outside Boston and would be happy to volunteer my car, tools, and fluid if you want to do a video. Cheers.

    When bleeding the cooling system, it's also a good idea to have a battery charger plugged in as this process does consume a lot of the batterys power... last time I did this, it completely killed my battery so yeah just a heads up for anyone doing this. Great vid nonetheless !

    Does anyone know the void volume of coolant that doesn't drain from the engine? For example, if there is 3L of void volume, once flushed with distilled water, you would want to add 3L of 100% coolant, and then 7.5L (or to filled) of 50/50 blend so the entire system is 50%. Otherwise, if you only add 50% you'll end up being below 50% with the residual 3L of water diluting.

    Do you know how much fluid is retained in the system after draining? Reason I ask is that when you flush with water, then fill with 50/50 the net result is something less than 50/50. So if for example, you knew 1L was trapped in the system, you would first add 1L of 100% coolant, and THEN fill with a 50/50 mix.

    Stupid question but would not having the bleeding cap on and you drive your car would that cause a leak? I ask because I noticed a little hole inside my coolant tank when I add fluid. I have to keep adding fluid every week and after seeing your video I'm 90% I know what's wrong now.

    Replace your coolant tank, the cooling system is supposed to be a sealed circuit, if air gets in it could cause an air lock too

  • @Rombbb
    @Rombbb6 жыл бұрын

    When draining shouldn't you also put heater on to allow it to drain that part of the circuit as well ? And when filling with heater on to reach the full system I guess you should also use the bleed screw and have reservoir open to allow air to escape, while keeping the reservoir topped up. Having bleedscrew closed and cap on doesn't allow any air to escape so your heater cycle will only distribute air elsewhere but not remove it.

    So you have to close bleed screw and cap open?

  • @Rombbb

    @Rombbb

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@zoggles89 Am no expert, but I would say yes, then run idle with heater on till engine is warm and thermostat opens up (so all cooling channels are activated), stop engine, use bleed screws to let air out, top up the reservoir. Only thing I'm not sure about anymore (it's been a while) is whether the fluid level can change when it gets hot (like expanding a bit) which needs to be taken into account. The actual measurement (making sure the fluid is between the marks) is done with cold fluid (or at least not super hot).

    I guess temp gauge isn't a watertight procedure to confirm there are no air pockets anymore. Air can be trapped away from the temperature sensor creating a local pocket of extreme heat resulting in a damage. This local heat does not necessarily show on the temp gauge

    Bmw coolant is crap anyhow. G12, G12+ or G13 is the best option as it is safe on ALL cars, won't rust steel radiators and doesn't have an affect on aluminium heads either. It's VW/Audi coolant. When I flush mine this is what I'm putting in as BMW's needs replacing every 2 years whereas VW G12 (or it's superiors) is a life time coolant! You can get an electron tester or something which shows the quality of the coolant by dipping a probe into it, I had mine checked on my Mk4 R32 which was 14 year old before I sold it... It was still performing to its expectations. The car was only on 64k miles though
