This reminds me of the nearly 20 year old Honda Civic my dad had most of my life. It had cooling problems that he couldn't diagnose so he had to have containers of water in his car when it got too hot and this dude gave him a coolant cap from Mexico that was basically a cheap cap with a hole in it. It was more common for people in Mexico to fill the radiator with water since the cheaper cars in mostly rough terrain driven by mostly poorer people wouldn't last anyway. The cap was designed to prevent internal water damage by letting the pressure release from the hole.

Former cooling system mechanic here. In an emergency re move the thermostat, cut the valve from the center and put the outer ring back in. Don't run it without that restriction or the pump will send it through the radiator so fast it won't have time to remove the heat from the coolant. I always keep an old thermostat with the valve removed in my 2 older vehicles just in case. Also, when changing the thermostat test new one in boiling water on the stove to be sure. If you drill a 1/16 or 1/8 inch hole in it just outside the valve center it will let trapped air purge from your engine. Otherwise it can take up to 2 weeks of driving to completely purge that air that gets into it anytime you open the cooling system.

One of your best videos. Water is good in an emergency. My car foiled over once. I got a couple gallons from a nearby farmer. It worked fine until The next day when I got it to a garage to replace the coolant. Sometimes mixing two types of coolant they will form a gel and won't do a thing. GM requires a special coolant. Mixed with regular coolant the gel will quickly kill your engine.

I agree about using the proper coolant. In the old days, coolant was coolant. Now some have different chemistry, especially long life organic acid ones, and should not be mixed. This is one place I won't try to save money and will get the recommended coolant and transmission fluid at the vehicle dealer's parts dept. I have a Honda with no temp gauge, just a cold and hot light. I hate that, reminds me of domestic cars in the past.

This is why it’s important to keep an eye on the coolant , radiator hoses, and radiator to help you're engine stay cool so it won’t overheat.

Nice. What a perfect video to come up. I'm going to be replacing the radiator on my 2000 ford ranger tomorrow morning. And probably some power steering parts. Who knows what else. I'll know once i get into it. Lol

If you have a leak in your cooling-system, the boiling temperature of your cooling fluid will change. Think of it as pressure cooking. The water boils at a higher temperature because it is a closed system. Cool system leakage shows itself when you watch your temperature gauge. If it is fluctuating while following your drive speed. So higher when you dive lower and lower when you drive faster. Check your levels. If the level is good, you might have a leakage.

Not the car I have now, but my previous car had cooling system issues generated by listening to Jiffy Lube. They told me on a 2004 Cavalier, my coolant needed changing. I bought the car new, so for warranty you had to go to one of these places for warranty to cover stuff. Jiffy Lube used a general purpose coolant in it. Didn't notice anything wrong for a while. Started smelling antifreeze. The seal shrunk around the water pump. I put the dexcool antifreeze back in it. Within a few weeks, the seal swole back up & the leak stopped. What use to piss me off was, they would bang my air filter up against the wall & distort the louvers in it. I would have to go buy a new air filter. No matter how new your wiper blades are, they said you need new ones.

Good job, you spoke so much about the Lexus so now I want one. Just curious, would it be still a good deal for Europe as well? More exactly East Europe where all the wrecks from the West come too? There aren't many here from what I've seen and I heard they can be quite expensive to fix... I'd still want a diesel engine as I don't feel a particular pleasure in going to the gas station too often and I also love my standard transmission

Scotty, I like these lessons and you’re a fun and insightful professor. What do ya know about Antilock breaking? Are modern vehicles overly sophisticated and require far to much technical maintenance? A failure free car is totally buildable, don’t ya think?

Good evening Scotty from the UK . Here it is 21.37 BST. Very informative regarding the EVs. In 2030 the UK will stop selling new ICE cars so we will have to learn about this EVs whether we like it or not. One day , perhaps, the US will follow suit.
