How to Change the Engine Oil in a 2004 Mazda 6 2.3L

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I demonstrate how to change the engine oil in a 2004 Mazda 6 with the 2.3L 4 cylinder engine. It is a relatively simple job, but the oil filter is a special cartridge type on this engine.

Great video. I was just quoted $633 to have oil, spark plugs and air filter changed on a 2004 Mazda 6. They can go for a walk at that price - I'm watching videos like yours to find out how to do it for myself!

The plugs are fairly easy on the 4 cylinder, just remember that you need NGK platinum iridium spark plugs, at about $18 each, so don't cheap out or the motor won't run right. The air filter is fairly straightforward as well. Good luck

6speeddakota thanks, I appreciate your advice. Do you know if I will get underneath to do the oil change with the car on level ground, or will I need to use axel stands on all four corners to get it high enough? I'm fairly skinny..!

Believe me, you're going to need ramps or stands. This is a very low car. You don't really need ramps in all 4 corners, just lift the front to gain access to the bottom of the motor

6speeddakota thanks, will get ramps for the front of the car. The oil will drain ok with the car not level I hope? Sorry for all the questions!

Don't be sorry for asking questions. It's much better to be armed with knowledge rather than diving in blind. The oil will drain better because the car is angled backward towards the plug, so gravity will pull a bit more oil out. Just be sure to not overfill the oil while it's up on ramps, what I do is fill it full, or just below full, then I can start it, check it for leaks, and then shut it down, put the plastic skid plate back on, drive it off the ramps and then shut it off and check and adjust the final oil level. Also, this car apparently had a cracked filter housing recently and it leaked a ton of oil, so if your plastic filter housing is getting old, you may want to consider replacing it with a new one, you can buy them on amazon as well as the special tool used for taking them off for a reasonable cost. Just my 2 cents. It'll save you the trouble down the road since plastics tend to get hard and crack over time. - 6sd

how often do you have to replace those o rings?

what kind of tool did you use to unscrew the oil filter bolt? I thought it was a normal allen wrench.

+Strainologist707 It is, I used an allen bit socket and a ratchet. Sometimes you can cheat and use a torx bit if it doesn't take much force to turn like in this case. A regular metric allen wrench works just fine too

Also make sure that the ring isn’t stuck when you remove the filter make sure the old ring is in there if not you need to take it off because you are going to have two rings and that’s going to leak and make a big mess!

once again wrong tool to loosen oil housing cap, you will ruin it like that, get the socket that fits it , i think is a 76 mm size, very cheap to buy around 5 dollars totally worth it .
