How to Change the Air Filter in your Landcruiser 200 Series | Why a Unifilter?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video details how to change the air filter in your Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series with the VDJ200 diesel motor. It is a simple task with few pitfalls that most back yard mechanics can perform in minutes.
I have changed from the factory paper element to the Unifilter and I detail why I have done this, and why I believe the factory air box and element are poorly designed.
This is very important because many 200 Series diesel motors have been dusted and cost the owners tens of thousands of dollars to repair. This is not a position you want to be in!
You CAN do this yourself, just watch this video and back yourself, it will work out fine!
This is the fourth video in a Routine Maintenance Video Series that details all the normal routine maintenance items that you can do at home with a simple assortment of tools and a little know how.
Subscribe and tune in for more routine maintenance how to's like this air filter replacement video, save yourself a mittful of cash, and create a sense of accomplishment to boot.

Couldn’t agree more with this video, no dust should be on the clean side. I have been down this road with stock filter and the sealing edge only to find it was coming through the filter media. Coming from a dirt bike back ground the oiled foam filters work a treat when serviced properly. I’ve had my uni filter in for a few years now and nothing has ever been on the clean side yet!! Now a subscriber because you speak common sense and have good vids. Cheers James

Awesome feedback James, and I could not agree more about oiled foam filters and dirt bikes. If they are using in a competition environment like that, they will work on our 4WD’s. Mines still going strong after many years of use, regular maintenance is the key. Thanks again mate😎👍

@@JafffaAdventures my only be careful comment would be on the use of petrol for cleaning, from my experience on bike filters is the foam breakdown can be quick, possibly in between services and the foam will disintegrate into small pieces and make it through the mesh into the engine however you’re already aware of this. I actually use motorex air filter cleaner works a treat but takes longer to dry. I’m now doing the techstream install thanks to your other video been trying to get this for months until your vid. Keep up the great work.

Another very nice well explained video Terry, another very nice 200 series mod. I reckon if you keep showing all this nice mods the next comment you'll get it'll be from my wife (the household treasurer). Jokes aside, I do like to do something about the poor filtering issue on the 200 and it looks like the Unifilter is one of the most cost effective solution. How often do you need to clean it when travelling off-road? And do you bring a spare with you when travelling off-road? Thanks

  • @JafffaAdventures

Thanks Max, I appreciate you taking some of your valuable time to comment. I too have a treasurer that I have to get items past, so I feel your pain. I take a spare outer element on all my off road travels. The inner one never seems to get contaminated so I have not had a reason to change it when I am off road. I also run a snorkel sock when on big trips so that helps as well. In terms of change intervals, that really depends on the terrain I am travelling in, and if I am solo or not. If it’s coastal or beach travel, I can easily get 5000km before a clean or swap is required. If I’m travelling dusty roads, especially in a convoy, I will clean it every 1000km or even more frequent. That’s because the dust load is very high in those situations. I trust this helps with your questions Max, if not hit me up again. Cheers😎👍

Great video Terry. I have a Unifilter too and it does a far better job than the factory or OEM filters. You mentioned you use petrol but Unifilter recommend mineral turpentine so as to not damage the filter material. Is there a reason why you use petrol instead? Also they recommend that you don't use the blue filter oil as it's solvent based rather than mineral based which can also damage the filter material. Anyway keep on making those videos mate they're a great watch. 👌👍

Thank you Davo, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. Yes, you are correct, they say petrol over time will damage the filter. I actually note this in the video. The reason I use it is I find it cleans the filter better, and then flashes off quickly and I can then just brush any remaining dried contamination off. Regarding the blue filter oil, I’ve been using this for 20 years now. On this cruiser and my 80 Series before that. Never had any filter degradation and the benefits i note in the video are real. Of course if what you do works for you, that’s awesome. Again, thanks for sharing. Cheers 👍😎

Thanks for the kind words. I feel for you guys locked up, that would seriously suck although I understand why it has to happen. I have used the bottled Unifilter oil in the past and did not care for it because it was syrup coloured and hard to visually tell that you had good coverage. I’ve since changed to pressure pack Pentrite blue coloured filter oil and can now see when the filter is fully covered. There are other pressure pack brands that are coloured as well. I just get it from Supercheap or any other parts store. Cheers😎👍

Just a follow up. My previous comment was about what oil you use and went and bought the Penrite spray on. It is certainly easier to apply but my question is does it dry out after some time or have you found it stays tacky the whole time between washes. How often do you clean your filter using this product. I see Penrite have a foam filter cleaner as well which I will use to help preserve the condition of the foam. Thanks

Thanks for the question. I have never had the filter element dry out, it stays tacky the whole time. Even after some seriously dusty conditions it still remains tacky. I change it every 5000km under normal operating conditions, as frequently as every week in extremely dusty conditions. I have used the water soluble cleaner in the past and it works well and is definitely not as harsh as petrol on the filters. Cheers👍😎

Air flow goes from the bottom up through filter and into engine. Screen mesh on filter housing prevents filter from getting dislodged from engine vacuum and consequently sucked into intake.

Just installed my first UniFilter Terry. My MAF sensor phillips screws are totally corroded so i couldn't unscrew it. Started to thread. Instead i left them in the box and sprayed maf cleaner. The Maf cleaner disolved straight away on the plastic which was good. Let it try for a while and air sprayed. Im guessing i might need a new sensor and box because i cant budge those screws?
