How to Bleed the Brakes on your Toyota Landcruiser using Toyota Techstream | LC200

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome to another maintenance video in the Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series playlist. In this video Jafffa Adventures shares some information about the chemistry of brake fluid and the difference between DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid. The bulk of the video however, focuses on how to bleed the brake system in your 200 Series Landcruiser. Jafffa Adventures uses two methods to do this, the traditional method using a helper to pump the brake pedal, and the modern method using Toyota Techstream and a laptop computer to do the work for you.
This is part three of what could be called a three part series. In part 1 we changed the pads and rotors on my 200 Series Landcruiser, Part 2 we detailed the handbrake replacement, and Part 3 details how to flush the brake fluid using traditional methods as well as your laptop and Toyota Techstream.
There are plenty of other "how to" maintenance videos in the library, in fact there is an entire playlist dedicated to the maintenance of your 200 Series Landcruiser (link below).

    Thanks Terry, another ace video - there is a hybrid method too, if you have a helper and do it with the engine running, each time they pump and you open the bleed screw the ABS pump will push fluid through the open bleed screw at a greater rate than the pedal pump alone. It also pays to keep end of your bleed hose submerged in fluid and close the bleed screw before the helper lifts their foot, to avoid drawing air back into the caliper.

    Who would ever guess that you can bleed brakes with a laptop. I can remember back in the 70's doing it old school way with an assistant. These days you can do it solo with the help of a laptop, WOW, who would have foreseen that? Happy days! Great into for the future mate and thanks yet once again, cheers

    I didn't know about the Techstream method, I'll try it next time. I empty the reservoir by cracking a rear bleeder and turning on the ignition. The ABS pump will empty the reservoir... just make sure you stop before it runs dry/sucks air. No need to suck out the reservoir. I also use this method to bleed the brakes by myself. ie, crack bleeder, turn ignition on (WITHOUT foot on brake so engine doesn't start). Turn off after a few seconds. Move to next caliper. I can't remember if the front need you to hold your foot on the pedal slightly. Not sure if this is the same thing as using Techstream, but it definitely makes the ABS pump start. This may not be the correct way of doing it, just something that I worked out. Some of the details may be slightly different from what I described because I just make it up as I do it. This is how I also used to drain the reservoir and bleed the rear brakes on my 100 Series. Front ones just use the old fashioned method. BTW, is DOT4 compatible with all the rubber components designed for DOT3? Personally I'd just stick with the manufacturers recommendations unless I was 100% certain it's OK. Thanks for sharing your video.

    Good stuff mate, whatever works for you is best for you, thanks for sharing. All DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 brake fluids are compatible with each other and with all systems. DOT 4 simply has a higher boiling point than DOT 3. Nothing wrong with sticking with DOT 3 if that is your preference that’s for sure. Cheers👍😎

    Hi Terry, great video, especially the techstream bleeding, just wondered why you changed to Dot 4, apparently Dot 3 is less hydroscopic than Dot 4, although the boiling point is less, which is why Toyota select it for a 4x4 truck. Dot 4 is easier to get hold of nowaday though!

  • @JafffaAdventures

    @JafffaAdventures

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Brett, I sincerely appreciate your kind words. I swapped over to DOT4 simply for the heightened boiling point. Changes in hydroscopicity is not really a concern for me because I change the fluid significantly more often than the manual calls for. Cheers😎👍

    The other advantage of bleeding with Techstream or vac bleeding is that the master cylinder piston is not being pushed past its normal travel into a dirty maybe pitted part of the bore. Have seen more than a couple instances over the years where bleeding the old way resulted in a US master cylinder - unlike a clutch master , there is a huge part of the master that never gets stroked.

    Well done Terry. Great video. I had done the Dba upgrade also but are yet to do the fluid. Will do so next. Stopping power is greatly improved but I still find the lc200 pedal feel to be spongy. Did you consider braided lines? Thanks, Alex

    I agree with you 100% Alex, the stopping power is greatly improved but the LC200 pedal is a little spongy. I did not consider braided lines but I do not tow and I found the factory brakes ok, and figured the improvement with the DBA would be enough on its own. If I were towing, I probably would have upgraded to braided lines. Have a great weekend mate😎👍

  • @JafffaAdventures

    @JafffaAdventures

    Thanks for the kind words Max, I sincerely appreciate it. Yes, I certainly could have used the computer to bleed the lines as well. Laziness got the best of me, I opened the lines, went inside and had lunch, and came back out to top up MC occasionally, an hour or so later it was done. I did not upgrade to braided lines as I have found the factory brakes adequate, and knew the DBA would be better again, so no need for me to go the extra cost step. Also, I do not tow a van. Cheers😎👍

  • @JafffaAdventures

    Good question Nick. They were both the same in my opinion. The advantage with Techstream is that you can do it on your own easily. I know you can do the manual method on your own, but it’s sooo much easier with the computer. The other advantage I found is that Techstream pumps more volume per stroke compared to the brake pump method. In the end, the results were the same. Cheers😎👍

    Resting not Reseting! Hey Terry, I'm sure someone has already mentioned it but the red text on the computer screen said "RESTING" not "RESETING" I suppose this makes no difference anyway to what you are doing but just thought I'd point this out. Also, It's weird how the computer "Bleeds" the front brakes without actuall purging any fluid from the bleeder nipples hey? Maybe it purges it back into the master cylinder???
