How To Change Oil - 2019 - 2020 GMC Sierra Denali & Chevrolet Silverado 6.2L Engine

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's episode I show you how to change the oil in my daily driven 2019 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate with the 6.2L V8 L87 engine. This should be an identical process on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado with the same 6.2L engine. This will also work on 2020 model year trucks. You don't need to lift the truck like I did, you can just climb under it to drain the oil. It is very easy and fast!
Some of the tools used in this video include:
amzn.to/38HIjwQ - Castrol EDGE 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil (03124)
amzn.to/2vi6fse - ACDelco Engine Oil Filter (PF63E)*
amzn.to/2RuVHij - WORKPRO 12" Adjustable Oil Filter Pliers
amzn.to/2GoBx33 - NUZAMAS 8-In-1 Flexible Dog Bone Socket Wrench
amzn.to/2TY0vyj - ATD Tools Drain Pan (5184)
amzn.to/36sD42D - Plews & Edelmann Super Long Funnel (75-068)
amzn.to/2GrQyBe - SAS Safety Raven Powder-Free 6 Mil Nitrile Gloves XL (66519)
* Amazon thinks this filter doesn't fit our trucks for some reason. It's literally the factory filter and every other site matches it.

    Quality video. I did my first oil change at 5k myself then brought it to dealer for all the rest. At $75 including tax they do oil change, rotate tires, top of fluids and a carwash. Can’t beat that price for all the work/ convenience plus its at the dealer.

    Glad you liked the video. The dealer can be more convenient, but in my city (Houston) due to traffic and distances it's a hassle. It takes me like 35 min to drive there. Then it takes them 2+ hours to do the job. Then 35 minutes to drive back. That's at least 3+ hours of my life and I'm hoping they don't screw up. For me the car wash is actually not enticing, because dealerships don't do a good job. I maintain a ceramic coating on my daily driven cars and dealer washes tend to install swirls into paint I spent a couple of days making perfect. So my dealer actually has it noted in their system to NOT wash my car when it's there for warranty/recall work.

    Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video. Its normal for the CEL to turn on with the ignition to show the light still works. All modern cars I have the light comes on with the ignition, usually along with other important warning lights. If yours stays on once the engine is running, like while you’re driving, you should scan it and see what it is. Autozone can scan for free or you can buy one of those cheap scanners that uses your smartphone. This way at least you’ll know what the code is in case dealer claims they dont see it.

  • @DmitrysGarage

    @DmitrysGarage

    4 жыл бұрын

    Tom, thanks for watching. Appreciate the kind comment. For the truck I would recommend any brand name (Mobil, Castrol, etc..) synthetic blend or full synth that matches the factory weight and spec if you're daily driving it like most Americans do. If you have a unique case like frequent heavy duty towing, a desire for long change intervals, a high weight oil for performance, etc... then you can get fancy with it. Keep in mind there are lots of games and loopholes these companies use to market oil as "full synthetic" when it is really a Group III oil. Group III oils are made from highly refined crude base stock, but many people don't consider that to be truly synthetic. Group IV and Group V are the true synthetics and you have to do your research due to the gimmicking these companies do.

    Good stuff. Been doing oil changes on my own cars for a while but new to GM so figured I'd take an intro course and not be surprised. Well, I am surprised. Surprised at how dumb the engineers were to put the filter on such a hard spot. Now, I do need to get that clamp. My Dodge Durango has the filter vertical in the engine bay, like most Subaru's. Engineers don't make it easy, do they?

  • @DmitrysGarage

    @DmitrysGarage

    4 жыл бұрын

    Meant to reply earlier, but got sidetracked. I think at 1,000m/week that is a lot of oil changes. On one hand you could look into oil testing with a lab to see how far you can stretch your chosen oil. You could also find a more durable oil. However, because you are driving on ranch roads you're going to get more dust and dirt into your oil from the intake filter. So long duration may or may not be desirable. Testing would really tell. At the least, for such a high use vehicle, I would maintain a religious change schedule and overall maintenance schedule. Most fleet and business vehicles tend to be in bad shape due to neglect more than the nature of the work.

  • @DmitrysGarage

    I would almost always suggest just going with a high quality synthetic oil (Castrol, Mobile 1, etc) that matches OEM spec. Unless you truly have a special application. If you’re racing, hauling/towing, especially in extreme climates, etc. Then I suggest getting a factory spec synth oil tested by a lab through its life and try tweaking it. So if you’re hauling in a super hot climate try a slightly thicker high end oil with lots of molybdenum and zinc and see how it holds up in lab tests.

Just for the heck of it, I went out and checked the oil level on my GMC, and to my surprise, I've never seen a dipstick like this. It's kind of braided. I'm trying to find out what it is with not much luck so far, but I think it's far superior to the traditional anybody has any experience let me know.

    For a daily driver, I have typically flushed out the factory fill and swapped in my choice of factory approved spec oil at 1,000 miles. Then I just run it normal intervals going forward, whatever the manual and computer says for normal duty. If you're at 2,000 it's not a bad time to go ahead and do it. The first oil change will be the most contaminated with metal. I've done oil analysis on engines as they age and the first one always has more metal in it vs. a healthy broken in engine.

    With this much oil capacity you won’t be in any danger. You would have to lose a lot more than a quart to have a problem. Though you should be routinely checking oil level, at least once a month at minimum to make sure you don’t have a major leak or problem (ie head gasket).

    Are you certain that its okay to have that level? upon checking the oil level next morning and my truck is parked flat have not started, my oil level is like yours middle of the hash marks knowing that I just brought it for an oil change, its brand new 2020 denali gmc 1500 sierra 6.2L v8 or should i bring it back to the service and have it fill up?

    You're overthinking this. I can sympathize as I'm a bit OCD and a hypochondriac about this kind of stuff. It is fine to be within the hash marks, you do not have to be at the top. The hash marks on the dipstick indicate an acceptable range of oil levels once you've changed the oil, started the engine, then let it cool down. The middle of the hash marks for me was the exact designed capacity as documented by GM. Being +/- a little oil doesn't make a huge difference and readings vary with conditions i.e. temperature, how long ago you started the engine, etc... People get very anxious on these dipsticks that don't show a fixed line to hit. People also get anxious when there is a fixed line and they're a little off. You can't win when designing a dipstick. The good news is at least we still get oil dipsticks in these trucks, because they're starting to disappear on new cars.

    Dmitry's Garage sir another question i tried to rev. My truck gmc 2020 denali 1500 6.2L v8 gasoline while parked with engine already warmed up, i was surprised rpm can only go at 3000rpm, dealer service center said its normal for new model? How about yours?

    Sow me more how to get the sample from this same car

  • @DmitrysGarage

    Its pretty easy to take a sample with a fluid extractor such as the MityVac. Just feed the hose down the dipstick tube and pump out a sample, then just top the oil off.

    What do you mean by the “front drivers get moved to the rear passenger and the front passenger to the rear driver, but they don’t get moved diagonally” I don’t get it

  • @DmitrysGarage

    @DmitrysGarage

    The front driver's side tire replaces the rear passenger side tire, so it moves diagonally across the truck. The front passenger side tire replaces the rear driver's side tire, also diagonally. However, the rear wheels and tires you took off just move up they don't cross over diagonally. So the passenger side rear will replace the passenger side front and the driver's side rear will replace the driver's side front.

    Does your truck use oil in between oil changes

    I got rid of it, but it did not at an appreciable amount while I had it. Being direct injection it is fairly common to consume some, but I have generally been lucky and my cars are fairly low annual milage.

    Walmart has very reasonable pricing on oil changes.

    Rick, I don’t think walmart has the right oil. Here they use quaker state oil and quaker doesn’t seem to have a matching oil in their lineup on their site. They’ll probably use a same viscosity oil if they agree to do the change, but you wont get a VW approved spec oil. You could bring your own oil (ie Castrol) and have them fill it I suppose
