    These vans only last for 350,000 after that they get a little tired. The transmissions only need a filter and fluid change every 100,000. Pay me now (oil change) or pay me later (transmission replacement)

    Thanks for the straightforward video, much appreciated. QUICK QUESTION - I heard that newer vehicles require modern ATF but that older vehicles can be damaged by the detergents of modern ATF and that you need to get 'old school' or old original type ATF for them. Is this a myth or is there something to that. I can just see myself blowing up the transmission of our old camper.....you know, 'if it aint broke, dont fix it'! I do think it desperately needs to be done (dont know if it ever was) and it could very well be on its original fluid from 1979. Anyhow, could you shed some light on that? Cheers

    @davidlis6709

    Never heard that before. I didn't know there was a difference. Maybe, talk to the service manager at Ford. I usually change the transmission filter about 70k to 100k. There is nothing to screw up, just don't touch anything. There is also a deposit of metal filings on the bottom of the pan so they must be some in the filter. Cheap service.

    I have a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup that I keep at my mother's house in Upstate NY and I drive it 2 weeks in May and 3 weeks in September. The rest of the time it sits by itself in the garage with a trickle charger on the battery. I have been doing this for 5 years. When I start driving it, for the first 1 to 3 days (not all the time) it slams into 2nd gear. So I asked my friend who rebuilds transmissions for a living and he told me not to pay attention to it and just drive it. He said that there is a valve in the valve body of the transmission that is sticking but after a while it will loosen up and stop doing that. How many miles on it? I usually change my filter and trans oil in my cars every 100,000 miles, no matter what the manual says. My 2 cents.

  • @chuckels0
    @chuckels0 Жыл бұрын

    When you show the manual in the beginning of the video it shows 13.9 quart capacity, but you only got a little over 4 quarts out of it. I'm confused as that's such a huge difference. Would you mind explaining why that is?

  • @davidlis6709

    @davidlis6709

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question. You never get all the oil out because there is oil in the transmission itself and in the torque converter. The best you can do is drain the oil pan, clean it out, and change the oil filter. I do my cars at 70,000 to 100,000 miles.

    Are you supposed to start the engine when filling the new fluid?

  • @davidlis6709

    @davidlis6709

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, You want the fluid hot when you check it to see if you have enough. Also, when you think you have enough, I put the truck in reverse and then in drive and back to reverse and into park, then recheck the fluid. This simulates driving the truck.

    Hey David, Great video!! I have purchased my 2005 E250 about 2 years ago at 25k miles and now I have about 39k miles. I’m not sure if previous owner performed any Transmission fluid change. I called Ford by my house in NYC and they are saying it’s a 16 year old Van and it’s too late to do transmission fluid change and the service advisor said he don’t recommend it. So at this point not i am not sure if I should change the fluid or not. Any suggestions!! BTW the van drives like new. No problem in shifting at all.

  • @davidlis6709

    @davidlis6709

    Does he want to sell you a new transmission? Never head anything like that before. I think he is full of it. Change the oil and filter and do it every 100,000 miles. That van will last you as long as the body does not rust out from the salt.

    It is a Sea Dweller, diving watch. I moved from NY to California in 1980 and I started to ocean dive. My Timex lasted one dive, filled up with salt water, turned green and died. The move was a significant emotional event in my life because I had no job, nothing, just my van full of everything I thought i would need and $3,000. I was able to find a job, buy a house, eventually find a real California girl, so I bought myself reward. I paid $1,500, which was a lot at the time. I was going to have a new bezel put on but every Rolex dealer wanted a lot to do it and they all wanted to buy it from me for $15,000. They also said not to do anything with it because people collect old watches. Then they say to have it serviced every 5 years. I did that after the first 5 years and I have to bring it back 2 time for them to get it right. So, I will have it serviced when it stops. I have been running good for the last 35 years. As you see, in my videos, I use it all the time. Have a nice day.
