better to just insert a knife behind the head, if you interrupt the spine and cut downward, both blood flow and all vital functions through the spine get completely interrupted.. much more humane than almost any method, instant, and bleeds the fish as well.. best way of preserving meat.. get that fish on ice and you will be happy...

Macks are a great gamefish in their own right. They hang around the West End of the Cape Cod Canal most summers until late fall and are prime bait for large striped bass. When the bass are sated, and fishing for them gets tough, macks will take a streamer on a fly rod or a slender spoon like lure on fixed spool. They fight harder than most inland trout. The late great Frank Woolner wrote about this angling, freshwater tackle in saltwater is a delight!

Growing up back in Rhode Island it was possible for two guys on a small boat to land 400 pounds an hour late March early April. I've seen the schools 20 feet thick under the boat. But here in Virginia... they're so few and far in between it's not even worth looking for them. One of the best baits out there and fine table fare fresh, smoked or canned. Thanks for the vid. You took me back for a little while.

We actually do the exact same thing here on the west coast of the United States. Here in southern California we have such an abundance of Pacific chub mackerel that we can catch them off of the pier day and night from spring to fall. In the winter I think they head south to warmer waters. Though don't quote that. I have heard conflicting information on that subject without any confirmation either way.

Feathering for mackerel is about the same from shore as from a boat, except you are more likely to get snagged up and lose all your gear if you use a heavy lead from the rocks.Should be easier from a beach, but keep your fishing weight lighter than normal as most of the Mackerel will be running near the surface.

Jan. 1974 …...with gurdies, 3lb leads & 24 x plastic tube @ 15" intervals we (4 hands) had 802 stone of max off Lizard & next day Looe pals had 1380 stone (160 stone = one ton!) all 'shaken' not stripped. Beat that! (We WERE hungry pro. fishers though not dizzy danglers..... fishing for the fresh market & getting 40 pence per stone on a good day!!!)
