Dave Barham travels to Pembrokeshire to target bass with surface lures, guided by Mat Rickard from Bass Fishing Wales. The pair ended up with 67 bass caught off the top in a single day, topped by a rather lively 7lb 3oz beauty!

Hi Dave - if you click on the video title it says 'Dave Barham travels to pembrokeshire to target bass with surface lures'. I don't want to sound too much of a smartass but neither is it the Dovey estuary(please don't specify the exact mark! Lol) Good video & good fishing!

Regarding the Comment about pausing the lure if the bass or any other fish follows the lure and stops you must pause the lure and most certainly not keep reeling in the lure! When we use lures we are trying to mimic a injured bait fish because bass are looking for injured bait fish it's much easier than trying to hit a fit moving shoal of bait fish. When you watch any bass dvd or anything on here you tube most of the time a bass will see the fish or lure chase it then turn it's head away then get the Sandeel of sprats at the 2nd go

Jonathon Roberts, you may not have noticed this isn’t fly fishing! I do both and Bass hit prey fish hard, sometimes stunning them and then returning quickly to take the stunned fish (stunned fish don’t swim) this is what you’re trying to imitate when you stop the lure briefly after it’s been hit. Perhaps you should try it when you’re fly fishing, particularly if you’re fishing a minnow imitation, in the Autumn months Trout will slash at fry to stun and then return. Not bullshit at all 😏

Take some topwater lures, for the real early morning stuff, and also so black minnows - they work a treat in the deeper water.

Nice days fishing Dave, but I don't agree with you stopping the lure. Just keep going. Don't strike, as long as you keep going and they don't prick themselves they will just keep hitting it until they are hooked.

Guys, could I just say that for me one of the biggest attractions to the sport of sea fishing has been the peace & quiet and feeling at one with nature. Therefore I have to ask, what's with this crap sound track your using..? If I wanted to listen to some crap music then I would have searched for a crap music video, but I didn't, I searched for a fishing video & wish now that I hadn't bothered!!!

Don't come on my boat Pequod then Steve, we play Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries (think Apocalypse Now!) full volume on the way out, I've found it boosts moral enormously. You can't beat violin quartet for an afternoon's bream fishing, but they do tend to get in the way, and moan like mad if you get chum on their instruments.....

Wrong!!!! Ur suppose to keep on reeling like nothing has happen. When u pause, you will only tell the fish that the bait lure is not real.

And where did you read that? Just try it. I've caught over 400 bass off the surface on lures, trust me, pausing and winding again works a treat. It also works well with Dexter wedge type lures - ask any commercial bass fisherman!

Dave Barham yes your right Dave I reckon that if I had never paused a lure after a enquiry from a bass I would have lost maybe 3/4 of the bass that I have landed so your not wrong!!!! And are bass intelligent to know if it's not a fish and actually a piece of plastic? Maybe maybe not but I'll tell everyone that just because you pause your Sammy the bass certainly don't say to itself hey everyone there's a fake fish don't try to eat it and maybe the bass put flyers out in their magazine 《How to spot a lure uk》 with a picture saying I went for this yesterday and it stopped so it's not real!!look fella who put wrong!!!!!!! Have a read up on lure fishing because a pause and a twitch sometimes both is imperative when lure fishing and all lures are designed to be worked a certain way and if you just reel your plug in on a boring straight line your only going to catch cold.

+devilkicln Honestly there's no one that has experience like Dave Barham has I want having a dig at you I was having some good natured banter. Bass will turn away from a surface lure just before the take this is why we pause the lure because more times than enough the bass won't try to eat your plug until second or third hit because it's usually hitting the plug with its gills first and second and then the bad go the full monty on the 3rd bite because it's thinking that it's prey is dead or injured and that goes for any predatory fish marlin tuna dorado all do the same thing armband you can hear the skipper screaming don't strike stop count to three and work the lure again and they catch the fish 9/10.
