    for real in a short term survival situation there is no need to hunt large game especially something as dangerous as a boar, which often travel in groups, and can easily fuck you up badly. You hunt when you know you are gonna be there for a while. If you are just trying to make it a couple weeks, hunting isn't going to be worth the time or effort that could've been spent building up camp, gathering fruits/nuts, and if you get lucky, maybe youll catch some fish or a rabbit along the way.

  • @BrassBashers

    @BrassBashers

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@muscleman125 there are many better ways to hunt a boar like this in a safe manner. Deadfall traps and pit stakes are a good way, you just HAVE to make sure any others with you know exactly where they are. Spring snares are another decent way but the pig will eventually chew through the snare or even the tree its attached to; they have gnarly and sharp teeth. I would go with pitfalls because the animal can not escape, downside is it takes a lot of energy and calories to dig a 4-5 foot deep pit.

    The thing about Dave and Cody was that whenever Dave would stubbornly do something that Cody disapproved of, but would then bring something back substantial, he would shut up, share it with Cody, and would just be happy they both had something to eat. While Joe being a snarky ass had to pull that “I told you so” bullshit. Dave said himself during the episode and him and Cody were in the african big game reserve. “You’re gonna have to agree to disagree, and move on”. The goal is to survive, not prove a point.

    Heres what I’ve picked up from what little I’ve seen. Dave does things because they can work and may be necessary, while knowing if he can handle/negate the risks involved with it. Cody does things that reduce risk and energy/time invested, though it does reduce the effectiveness from time to time. Joe does things because his concept of surviving is dominating the wilderness. I think it’s the difference in survival training/beliefs. Dave and Cody are surviving, one a little more passive and safely than the other, but still focusing on surviving and working with the wilderness to maximize efficiency. Joe sees the wilderness as an enemy, and he’s trying to conquer it. Not necessarily wrong (especially in things like the jungles of Vietnam, I’m sure), but it’s a blunt hammer approach that makes everything look like a nail. There’s no “just getting by” if there is a more aggressive and ever so slightly more effective or direct method. A perfect example is the handling of snakes. Cody would say not to even approach it, Dave approaches and handles it calmly (if he thinks it’s important to their survival- otherwise I doubt he’d even bother with it), Joe immediately goes in to fight/flight and believes they need to kill it- regardless of necessity for food or material, and regardless of risk.

    One of the biggest rules of survival is don’t go after big game. Either fish or build a snare to catch small game. If you know what your doing you can build larger traps like pitfall traps or large game snares for deer or other medium sized animals like coyotes.

  • @kettch777

    @kettch777

    It depends. Longer term survival may require you to hunt and bring down larger game. However, in this case Joe had the proper equipment--namely, a boar spear and materials to make a strong snare to trap the pig before he stabbed it. Without the proper gear, though, I would agree. There was one other episode where Joe brought down a larger game animal--a deer--but he had a bolt action .308 rifle with one round as part of the scenario (lost deer hunter.)
